Lack of health bar or something of that sorts on screen. I'm sorry but a bloody screen is not very specific in telling me how close to death I am. Hell even Halo did this and it had rechargeable health.

Bouncy, rolly, tinkly grenades that either blow up the entire world or blow up fuck all. main offenders are; MW2 with fucking rubber ball grenades that bounce roll and fly in every direction. ; Killzone 2 with grenades that literally flash and beep and leave a glowing trail ("Lights AND beepers in our grenades? THEY'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT HIT THEM.").

Fucking lazer bullets, i'm looking at you CoD. BF2, the ARMA and Op Flash games have bullet drop, why are we still shooting lazer bullets in CoD???
Because not every game needs to be realistic.

Well, it DOES take place after a nuclear apocalypse...
This is kind of my point when most people bring up the brown argument. Say you are fighting in a desert wasteland or a canyon floor or a wooden building. What color SHOULD it be. That's far more important. Heck you could make it purple sand with yellow trees just to be different. But what makes sense is more important.

You die in 4 hits
You remain vertical after being hit three times? Wow, that's pretty good. I stopped playing MW for the simple reason that if one single bullet anywhere in the world even begins to think about the possibility of coming within half a mile of you on some theoretical future date, you die. Enemy enters the room, he doesn't even have to fire, you just die. Surrounded by your own teammates? You die. And so forth.

I'm sure all the 13-year-old MW players are thinking, "Dude, you just suck." I've been playing shooters since Doom. Yes, the old one. I was *awesome* at Half-Life deathmatch back in the day, and am very good indeed at Team Fortress and Left 4 Dead. I respectfully submit that belonging to the twitch category does not, in itself, indicate any measure of quality in CoD or any other game.
I'm the opposite, lol. I much prefer having to treat every single enemy like something that can kill you, rather than waves of fodder.
Erm, have you ever played Left 4 Dead? It's true that in Versus the common infected are nothing but a distraction, a minor road hazard. But a single real enemy, i.e. a special, can and will kill you if you drop your guard. Since specials come every few seconds -- or four at once, if they know what they're doing -- you have to pay attention every moment. Check every corner, never blink, always know exactly where your teammates are. Even then you will lose often.

The "waves of fodder" as you put it also become unbelievably dangerous in Expert mode, where one hit takes a quarter of your health away, and, of course, there is no free instant regen like you get with your game.

so we start the match, and I scope in to get a view of my surroundings. and that's when it appeared: Fucking SCOPE DRIFT.

Any one with the smallest increment of fucking rifle training knows how to keep a bead accurate up to AT LEAST fifty yards. and here I was swaying all over the damn place for no reason.
I agree it's not realistic. But neither is the "take three bullets, then duck for five seconds and be totally fine" bullshit all shooters seem to employ these days. Neither is coming back to life, or the layout of the maps, or not being allowed to have an extended clip and a laser sight at the same time, or not being allowed to paint your face until you kill a bunch of guys, or, or or or. I could make the obvious remark about scope drift being for game balance, but I've always thought sniper to be a lazy, overpowered class, even with drift.
So you're saying I'm splitting hairs. i can accept that, although I perfer my games more unrealistic, truthfully.

I know that alot of people loathe sniping, but thats because shooters portray it wrong. It's not an offensive skill, it's much more for holding points.

I guess you're right. Snipers, in war, are a nearly inpregnable wall of death against soldiers not using advanced tactics, but weak to several other ones as well, such as mass Scorched Earth (wikipedia it) attacks. But this can't be portrayed in modern games, so I should stop getting my knickers in a twist.

But I'm still wondering, why is it so lazy and overpowered?

Yeah, but CoD pretends to be. Having played all of the CoD games, this has always bothered me, and it can't me much more time to implement than what they spend not patching their games.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. I've never understood how hiding around a corner with a shotgun makes you a cheapshit loser who can't play the game the way real men play it but hiding with a sniper rifle and one-shotting everyone from max render distance is perfectly okay.

Carrying hilariously small amounts of ammunition. Its ridiculus that my automatic rifle only lets me carry 120 rounds.

Basically everything. I miss the days of Quake, when not everything was brown, and when it was it was for a purpose and artistically executed (well, I'm not going to claim that Quake is high art, but it's fuckin' Monet compared to the dozens of copypasted crapfests that make up the modern shooter genre,) when games were occasionally a challenge for reasons other than "some dick has a sniper rifle and is being annoying about it," and when plots (such as they were) could occasionally be something other than Tom Clancy Lite or Totally Not A Heinlein Ripoff. Gah.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
sounds like most of you need a shot of serous sam
lets see, grenades bug me (they are only really used to clear rooms, your just as likely to kill yourself with them as your enemy just tossing them in the open) 2 weapon limit, this makes sense at times but its bad when an "arcade" shooter like duke does it, regen health, halo had a reason for this but none of the "realistic" ones do

People thinking they know everything about guns/war/military because they know the name of some stuff from games, call of duty specifically.
Thank you. This exactly. Video games got me into firearms, but I didn't go all willy-nilly and act like I knew everything. I actually did research. Looking into the mechanics of them and such. It irks me when some nine-tear-old thinks he's the second coming of John Browning because of CoD.

Example: Usually I get bored and play one or two matches in Modern Warfare 2, I usually try to keep my microphone unplugged because I'd rather avoid the stupidity but this time around I didn't. Que me going into a lobby with a ten to twelve-year-old pubescent child saying he could easily pick someone off with a 9mm at six hundred yards. This almost immediately it my Red Button. I immediately lay into him with things such as "Bullet drop", "Wind force" and the velocity of the bullet. And how it was nearly impossible for someone to accomplish that. He then started whining on how I didn't know what I was talking about and that I was one of those kids who "was going to be the next Columbine.". I'm pretty sure I was the only one who had actually had experience with a military grade M4A1 Carbine. Stupid kids. -.- /rant

Have you seen this trailer.

Pretty intense and disturbing. Loving the steampunk influences and the use of daylight as a way to make the horror more disconcerting.

Definately not a cliched shooter.
Holy shit! that was pretty fucking epic!

I'm keeping my eye on this!

The tired console-biased 16-18 man multiplayer component.

MAG did 256 on a PS3 for gods sakes, open up your server power for once. I don't care what the FPS is if it lets me have an authentic feel of war. That means interaction with teammates beyond shooting everything that moves and hoping you don't hit each other. Real tactics for the love of christ.

This is why I'm looking forward to Dust 514. Fix up the multiplayer and make it less cookie-cutter. Don't make us play the same maps over and over again, it feels like we aren't doing anything in the grand scheme of things.

Also: Equality, balance. THAT IS NOT FUCKING REALISTIC. Some guns are just going to be better than yours, more expensive, have more features. Suck it up for christ sakes instead of complaining about it in forums.

Not fun!? SHELL OUT AND BUY A TANK, THEN BRING IT TO THE GUNFIGHT. Flexibility, dog eat dog, that's what I feel modern shooters are missing.

I don't want a rocket launcher that's as effective as a pistol, when I use a LAW, I want shit to explode. When I use a pistol I expect shit to drop dead when I hit them in the head. If I'm using a assault rifle, I don't want to be killed by a sniper rifle shot to the leg. Stop compensating for bad players and just make them learn how to use the weapon.

That's what I want. Now I wish Dust 514 was here already.

The fact that everything is brown and grey.

Even in fallout vegas it annoys me and I love that game.
Bring back the colours! The world is grey enough, thank you.
So you're saying the new generation of shooters should take a hint from the 60's and 70's and feature psychedelic colors, the stoner comedy stylings of Cheech and Chong, giant purple rhinos disco dancing with giant pink elephants, and bring back goldfish bowl platform shoes?

Wait, hang on, that actually does sound pretty fun. Let's throw in some Renegades of Funk from the 80's and lighten up the dreary string orchestra soundtracks while we're at it.

Back on subject though, one of the modern shooter cliches that annoys me the most in single player is just how useless a helmet seems to be compared to characterization-plot-proof-armor. A soldier puts on their standard issue helmet and takes cover? Shot by a sniper. Another soldier decides that helmets are for pussies and instead opts for gallows humor macho ponderings? Bullet-proof until a relevant plot point where they either sacrifice themselves or cement their position as an impervious main character. I loved how Gears of War 2, despite championing this rational to the bursting point, also made fun of this trope in the underground level when you were drilling through a rock wall sideways. All the helmet-less main protagonists were coughing and wheezing though the passage while the helmeted Carmine (the only soldier among them with an ounce of common sense) was questioning why the hell they weren't wearing their helmets, fitted with filtration systems and protection against falling rocks and shrapnel for just such an occasion.

I have such fond memories of that game. It's one of my favorites of all time. So gritty, so badass, so visceral -- and it's what, fifteen years old? They don't make games like that now, which I find impossible to understand. Why make generic ethnic bad guys when you can make flying, hissing slug-creatures that throw snot at you? Why make twenty knockoffs of real-world firearms everyone has seen in other games when you can make a Nail Gun? I just don't get it.
