If a game is rated 18 then that means that anyone under the age of 18 cannot buy the game. So that person will need to get an adult (Parent/guardian) to buy the game for them, which means that it is that adult's responsibility and completely THEIR fault for getting the game for them.

The problem is, the parents don't understand that it's their fault that their kids are playing "violent" videogames and of course, put the blame elsewhere.

People can still import the game from overseas so the ban is slightly pointless

This is hardly surprising, IW knew exactly what they were getting themselves in for with that scene.

I'm going to go on a murderous spree, slicing up people and blowing them away with shotguns and the like, and then I'm going to blame it on Michael Atkinson; "Oh, if only I'd been allowed to release my homicidal rage on digital avatars!"

Well, L4D2 was banned there (or it might've been lifted, I forget), so MW2 doesn't suprise me at all. Just makes me glad I don't live there. REALLLLLLLLLY glad.
The ban on Left 4 Dead 2 was lifted, but now there is no decapitation, no gore, and no piles of bodies laying around on the ground. Left 4 Dead had all that and it got classified down here so it's pretty silly. Fallout 3, F.E.A.R 2, Dead Space and Gears of War had all that and got classified, but nope, not Left 4 Dead 2.

If God of War 3 gets banned..........
If they censored L4D2 and banned MW2, they will do the same with God of War 3. They are monsters.
Modern Warfare 2 hasn't been banned.

I made a thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.151281] a couple of weeks ago about the uncertainty of our ratings issue. Even if you don't check it out I'd like to bring one point I make across and that is don't abuse the OFLC, it isn't their fault that there is no R18+ rating, they simply do what the law says they can do. Also the OFLC has nothing to do with the introduction of an R18 rating, it's all handled by the Attorneys-General. Last I heard however, the members of the OFLC did in fact want an R18 rating to be introduced. At any rate, MW2 has not been banned and that isn't likely to change.

I used to like Australia...

You know, I don't really care for Modern Warfare 2 and I'm not going to get it, but that's pretty lame of them to get all upset about a game like that. I mean, it's just a game! Does watching a movie about terrorism promote terrorism? Does reading a book on terrorism promote terrorism? Then how does playing a game promote terrorism? Shouldn't they be more worried about finding and catching real terrorists than banning everything to prevent potential 12 year old suicide bombers?

In a way I'm kind of glad, from my specific perspective. I mean L4D2 was sucky, but once people realise this may become normal for Australia, they might actually feel the need to get off their asses and do someting about dis. That and I'm one of the PC guys who aren't going to buy it because they took out the server picking goodness.

It's ok he'll just import it and we'll get the review like a month or two after it comes out

Wait, why is everyone crying out here? We already knew the Aussies freaked out over this, this article doesn't say anything new, and it doesn't say it's banned yet, just that there is a call to reconsider the 15+ rating, but it's not actually reconsidered yet and I doubt it will. I just hope for all the Aussies that MW2 will still be for sale, and if all else fails there is always importation.

Why don't we just have a international rating system that makes it the same with every country. And I know this is like saying why does the US (were im from) not use the metric system. But would stop all this bullshit.

What do the aussie government have against games? Seriously?

It's like them and developers have like a mutual hate thing going on, they'll release a game ages later in Australia than anywhere else, then the government go and ban it :/

Although you have fantastic weather.

This is laughably stupid.
Promoting terrorism as a leisure activity, as if that's ANYTHING like real terrorism.
It will cause you to think that it's okay to shoot everyone in a mall! Video games are evil! RAwrrrr
And they cause AIDS and other bad stuff!

OT: I was afraid something like this might happen, Aussie censors are really weak souls aren't they?

I'm in New Zealand for Christmas and new year, maybe I should take a few copies down there with me, sell them for a huge profit and use the proceeds for my skydive!!

Joking apart, the powers that be in Australia need to grow the fuck up to be honest, it's getting pathetic. I'm sick to the back teeth of people that seem to sit around all day just waiting to be offended by something.

Once again, it's not banned here. You can buy it.

The thing about our classification board is this: they are inconsistent.

They ban a game where you can beat zombies heads in with baseball bats, yet they give approval to a game in which you, a walking bio-terror weapon, can devour large amounts of civilians and military personnel for health and no consequences. You can run people over in tanks, slice em up, steal helicopters and destroy thousands of people, murder and morph into cops/soldiers/old grandmas, and yet they find that game much more "moral" than a game in which you, a lone human survivor, kill monsters to protect your friends.

The Classification board here is insane - I'm sure they don't even PLAY the games they rate. I'd bet they just look at a few promotional shots, a video or two then rate it. Either that or they take MASSIVE BRIBES!

Wonder how Yahtzee will get his hands on this one. Cause he will but the review will be a bit late.

I hope they come to their senses and realise that games these days can tell a deep and meaningful story and should consider not banning this.
Or atleast asking for an already skipable scene to be cut.
