Final Fantasy XIII.

I mean, you run down corridors and just press X to attack for 20 hours. It'll be very empowering for her. Also a very pretty game. Shame there's no customisation.

Most games are too complex for non-gamers to play, trust me. RPGs are some of the worst

I would say W.o.W, but you don't want some of those people calling your Mom unspeakable names or corpse camping her in the starter area,..for fun. Jerks.lol

I'd probably go with the majority recommend - Oblivion (the difficulty bar in game-play options will be her friend.)
That's why you get her to roll on a PVE-RP server. Not a lot of name-calling and no corpse-camping ;) I've played on both pure PVE and PVE-RP servers and had a wonderful time (I met my fiance in a pug Naxx 25. cute undead rogue who turned out to be local, single and and compatible). Even most PVP realms (so I've been told), you really don't get flagged/into combat until you reach level 20 and leave your race's starting zones. And by level 20, you can somewhat take care of yourself in the world.

Uh what? I'm still playing Oblivion 4 years after release and I think I spent 8 hours yesterday just running around and exploring caves for treasure and questing. Some of the story arcs in Oblivion, especially Knights of the Nine, are epic in scope. And I say this as an English major.

The Paper Mario games are both very accesible and incredibly fun. I can absolutely recommend these to you, your mom or pretty much anyone else.

My mom is interested into taking up some gaming. She is a bit of a fantasy nut (reads different fantasy books, Song of Fire and Ice, etc), and she wants to find a game that she could play.

- Nice landscapes, visuals
- Not too difficult or complex (she gets frustrated when she doesn't understand something right away)
- Fantasy rpg, ability to create and customize a character

Me and my sister were thinking Fable II/III, but if you guys could suggest anything else, it would be nice to give her some options.

EDIT: By mom-friendly, I meant mostly difficulty/complexity of the game. She's not too prudish when it comes to romance/sex/violence! :)
Demon souls :D
Easiest game ever.
...You cold hearted bastard.

I love you hahaha.

Then I was probably just unlucky in my choice of servers, which I'm sure can happen. Since I had jumped from being nearly max in a PVP server, to a PVE server. I then leveled three 60's that turned into five 80's. But I agree that in my PVE server there was little to no corpse camping, but I do remember a large amount of trolls and name-calling, but mostly in the Major cities. We also used to round up a lot of people and go decimate starting areas. Horde was a bit better then Alliance, but all they could talk about was the 'stupid' Alliance, and the raids on Alliance starting areas was more frequent. lol. And really, being level 20 in a PVP server, managing to get flagged and pummeled by a group of max-level Horde or Alliance who are there specifically to kill and grief you (for the Lulz), does literally nothing to shield you. It can really be a frustrating situation if you managed, somehow, to get into the middle of it.

As for relationships, I bonded with my Husband (then boyfriend) over the game. Really, it's one of the main reasons we met. Not exactly in-game, but it was a reference to the game that made us start talking in the first place. =]p I also have friends from that game that carried over into real life friends, and that I've known for 'years'. We don't really play anymore but we talk a lot and play other multi-players. W.o.W can be very fun, especially socially if you can avoid the drama,......Damn it, now I want to start playing again,...>_>

My vote: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

The game is all about its story and decisions. It makes its gameplay and goals very clear to you, and doesn't require anything in terms of avatar movement or reflexes. You can save at any time, even mid-conversation.

And in terms of story? Let's just say this...we've had Metal Gear Solid. We've had Heavy Rain, and LA Noire. All of us can breathe a sigh of relief in admitting that they all had SHITTY, ridiculous stories. Phoenix Wright does not. People definitely "wow" over the endings of EVERY game, always filled with such unpredictable twists and reversals of fate that you're always left on the edge of your seat. The best part is that any and all plotholes the fans have come up with are very easily explainable (except in Apollo Justice).

Finally, the game is very, very funny. All the characters are well-written and make lots of amusing commentary despite the dire appearance of a game primarily about murders. The game doesn't even try to sell itself on its humor, the way so many horrible games have. It takes you from pop culture references to very real dramatic tension to the celebration of a finished case all in a matter of minutes. So many of the characters are unique as well, even if only through very unusual character quirks.

So I'll say it again: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Furthermore, if you're slightly amoral, there are ways of getting the original ROMs for an emulator. This being a public forum, I will not help you along that end (but if it matters, I will say the game isn't really in production now, and it's near impossible to find a copy that will fund the developers).

Valkyria Chronicles!

It's a tactical RPG and it's a beautiful game if you like CG.
And the story! I love it, heart wrenching!

Definitely worth playing!

Bethesda has their strengths and writing, quest design and dialog is just not one of them.
Some of the quests like the Dark brotherhood aren't terrible, but most of it is very average.

Try playing some Planescape:Torment and you'll see what i'm talking about.

Totally different style rpgs, but we are talking about writing and story here.
Planescape: torment did have its share of fetch quests. Probably the best side quests in games were Fallout 2 and Arcanum. Planescape: Torment has very strong writing and story but its quest design is not that great.

I think the Fable series is ideal for somoene who wants an easy, pretty game where you can customize the main character.

Not RPGs per say but I think games like The Longest Journey could be very fun for people not into games especially if they aren't into having violence.

Actually come to think of it Planescape: torment may be worth it as well. The game has tons of text but if your mom enjoys reading fantasy books then she shouldn't mind having to read so much for game.
