Okay like the title says, moments where somebody compares or assocaties two things that just shouldn't be. Me and a friend were watching a movie(forgot which) and the song Mad world starts to play and the first thing he thinks of is Gears of war. It really makes me sad that anyone could associat that song with such a terribly written game as Gears of War(not saying it isn't fun to play). I just wish that song hasn't been whored out so much. Its almost lost meaning.

Anywho any on the escapist have any similar moments.

For me it's when people think that the Tears for Fears version of Mad World isn't the sadder version. Um, of course the background is more poppy, the entire song is about hiding your sorrow from the world and your loved ones, and really being a complete mess inside. Like people who listen to the song but don't hear the music. Or to get less freshmen-college-philosophical on you, people who don't pay attention to lyrics.

The Donnie Darko version misses the point completely by making the music itself sad. So, unless they were going for making that version be a different kind of sad because they knew so many people would totally miss the point, thus making the people who appreciated the original even more sad that it had been ruined? Hmm...

I think I've gone off on a bit of a tangent.

Some rich asshole at my former high school once compared his house to Auschwitz because he had his iPod Touch confiscated by his parents for bad grades.

Our math teacher (who was a survivor of Auschwitz himself [he even had the tattoo on his arm]) completely lost it. I don't think I've ever heard a teacher yell that loud. Especially one that was 74.

Most arguments against gay marriage and most criticism of Obama. They usually are baseless.

The constant comparison between Bad Company 2 and MW2 drives me insane.
Especially when you consider that the people at my school who debate about which is better are only concerned about which one has better graphics.

Sorry but I'm going to have to disagree I like the Tears of Fears' version but it feels more like angest instead of saddness and depression. The pacing and the poppy background feels like it washes out the brillant lyrics.

EDIT: Only have heard the Gary Jules and TFF versions.

Double EDIT: Was calling them Tears of fear instead of Tears for fear. *Facepalm*

I could argue both coherently, but I agree that most political criticism from each and every side is enough to shake your head at.

That's not a comparison as much as it is linking something to something else. A comparison would be taking two things and saying how they're similar and different.

I hate how people compare gaming (in any of it's forms really) in any way to devil worshiping like they did so long ago with D&D.

I would have loved to see that happen, just to see the kid get taken down a level.

OT: Every time I get in an argument about gay marriage and someone brings up bestiality or incest. They are not at all the same and comparing them is just sick.

Thats why I said Compare or Associates. The title felt to long as it is.

Well, if there is any good criticism of Obama, i havent heard it. So far its been for him being kind to the rest of the world (interperated as being weak) and being too calm (same thing) God forbid people start to like America and we dont have a hot head leader.

As for gay marriage and the like, Adam and Eve, and next people will wanna marry their dog and lamp is just dumb. I could argue stupid like that too against not letting gays marry. "Lets not let gays, then blacks, then next we shouldnt let anyone marry anyone who isnt themselves, cept you cant anyway since that would be...gay"

First, that's pretty offensive. Second, I think he deserved to get yelled at (among other things). Some people just don't truly understand or appreciate the hardships that other people have suffered. If everyone truly understood the hardships others have suffered, this world would be quite different.

On topic: when people compare illnesses or injuries. For example, when two people have injuries and one says "well, I'm toughing my way through it. Why can't you?" Um, because they're not necessarily the same. One could be severe while the other is mild. Having a bruise on your knee is not the same has having no fluid left in your knee which would make each step painful or having it get "blown out" or broken. Unless you can actually feel the other person's pain, don't compare.

And that's one reason I avoid political arguments. Also, I've found that many people who argue against Obama and gay marriage do so because of thinly veiled (or simply not veiled at all) racism or homophobia which are not valid arguments in my opinion.

How does it miss the point completely? The lyrics are still there, they still have the same meaning. It just does not have that beeb boop noise and pop mess going off in the background. Now if your comparing music videos then I would agree, but I have a feeling I'm missing something here.

When people confuse Pixar movies with kiddie movies.
That is a bad thing to do. Especially when your not prepared for the emotional assault some Pixar movies give.

Ugh, I hate people like that. Not your teacher, but rich assholes.

Reminds me when my 8th grade class went on a Holocaust field trip. We saw the videos and everything of people being abused, tortured, and starved. And when it was all over some girl said she can't wait to leave because she's "starving".

One of the teachers lost it. And went on about how good she has it, and about how she just saw what real starving is and whatnot.

Many people take such basic and pointless things for granted.

Sorry, I should've explained more.

The whole point of the song is that the singer is depressed that no one understands how lonely/sad they are, and how the world is rotten on the inside yet we all soldier on like nothing is wrong. This is further shown by the style of the music, very pop and happy, like the rest of the crap in the late 80's. But anyone who actually listens to lyrics realizes the song is actually one of intense sorrow. This juxtaposition is an allegory (or one of those things) for the world at large.

While yes, the Gary Jules version DOES have excellent music and good pacing, it does away with that depth to go straight for the "Oh, the music is sad, so the song must be sad. Now I'm sad". And I hate it when things are dumbed down.

Here's my good deed for the day:

Here's a couple links:

The "Tears of Fears version" (shouldn't that be "Tears For Fears"?):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXuXikfIYHY

The "Tears For Fears" version with lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4i_PfH2UX0

And the Gary Jules (Donnie Darko) version:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MyMOi4LEr4

And the Gary Jules (Donnie Darko) version with lyrics

I figured that would help.
