Playing Morrowind for a first time is like jumping into 3 meters deep pool and you cant swim. Either you will learn to swim and you gonna love it or you will drown and you will never play it again.

Hey guys, I've just installed Morrowind, and lo and behold - I have no idea what to do? I've trundled around for an hour or so, and it all looks awesome, but I feel like my Dunmer needs some direction. So I call upon you to give me something to do, an objective, a quest or just tell me where something hilarious is!

From what I've heard, there's a ton of stuff in this game, and I'm a little intimidated, so help a brother out, yo.
Did you skip through all the dialog at the beginning? you're given a package that you're supposed to deliver to Caius Cosades (spelling?) in Balmora, witch can be easily reached via the Silt Strider for about 30 GP.

Or just join a guild, and do their quests. If you want definite short term goal, then go look for Creeper in Caldera.
How dare you insinuate I would skip through an RPG! I'm in Balmora right now, kinda lost. Where is this Caldera you speak of?
North of Balmora. Also reachable by mages guild teleportation. I take it you're not interested in the main quest? The game actually does give quite a bit of direction, Caius even recommends that you join a guild.

This map normally comes in the box with the game but it sounds like you don't have it. Should help. :p

A good start is to join a Guild (I start with the Thieves good loot and skill advancement also paying off your bounty is helpful). They help level you and you can kill rats for one!

Also take your time and rob tombs.

Truly I have the most fun gaining Speechcraft. Find an NPC (the ones walking outside in the town streets work best) then start Admire/Intimidate them keep doing it even if they get to 0. You will gain a skill with little consequences.

Also I have fun finding the note in a bottle off the coast, North East of Dagon Fel.

Lastly REMEMBER TO SAVE!
I mean it I don't know how many times I died and just to find out my last SAVE was two hours ago.

I'll do my best. Also, how big is the world? Bigger than Oblivion or not?
It's one of the biggest game worlds to exist. It takes awhile to get places.

Thanks a million, I got a crappy French version which didn't come with it.

I've already made a thread about this, but if someone knows how to patch the game from French to English, that'd be awesome (I'm originally from France, so I can understand it, but I'd rather it were in English).

No problem. Not sure I can help with language issue though, other than recommending that you ask on the bethesda forums, or failing that check out french elder scrolls modding sites, if there are any (I wouldn't know).

Get a high level then walk around until you find the guy with the Umbra Sword, die and then level up some more and have another go, then die.......you get the pattern.

otherwise just wander, its an awesome game, my first ever RPG.. *fond memories*

Note this: If you use godmode....you can break the game, yopu can break the main story line by going to far and doing things ahead of time. Trust me, i've done this in all my playthroughs (i was like 11 when i could play it).

If you find a guy that fell out of the sky, do not cast the spell he has on him.
Other than that, wander and wander and find your way through the game (you might die a lot, I sure did the first time I played through).

Step 1: Find the book called Tamrielic Lore
Step 2: Devote your morrowind career to tracking down the legendary items therein
Step 3: ?????
Step 4: Profit

Just make sure you've got a slowfalling potion on you. Levitation works too.

Yes, as others have said look for the guy that falls from the sky, he has a nice enchanted sword on him for a novice--it gives you a chance against ghosts. The scrolls he drops are good for GTFOing but yeah... make sure you aim towards the sea or have a levitation potion to pop right before you land, or you'll be a pankcake.

Somewhere along the coastline relatively close to Seyda Neen is a tomb. Pretty sure its in a western direction but I'm not sure, sorry its been so long. It should have a mudcrab spawn next to it, and only a few feet of shore between it and the waterline. Inside there's a very, very valuable item hidden away in the depths, defiantly worth the detour. Aside from that, do what everyone else has recommended! Deliver that package, and join a guild to start your fun. ^^

You can also just use another one of the scrolls as you land, your acrobatics will be high enough that it won't hurt at all

Did you go to Caius yet? That'll be a good place to start. Then join a guild. It's not as overwhelming if you just say "Screw it, I'ma do this!" and then do something decisive. You'll find yourself on some kind of manageable path that way.
I think you mean Balmora my good sir.

I think it's bigger than Oblivion but I might be wrong. Maybe it just feels bigger because there is no fast travel and you can actually get lost. I did and I wanted to find a way to civilization without a map. It took some time I'll tell you that. Damn Morrowind is awesome. Did you buy the expansions as well?
