Best thing to do starting out is play like you are a Final Fantasy Dragoon. That means jumping a lot, and leveling both spears and heavy/medium armor. This will give you strength and endurance which will make the rest of the game easier.

When you JUST get off the boat, you can loot the entire Census and Excise office by picking stuff up and dropping it on the ground while the inventory is still open. This will cause the guard to take the "stolen" item away from you, but he can't because it's not in your inventory any more. As soon as you leave the tutorial stage though, this won't work and you will get fined for stealing. I really recommend you do this because of the money you get to start out.

While in town, I always do 3 quests, Fargoth's hiding place (started by a Nord in the general store) The cursed ring (Started by talking to a wandering Imperial on the main street) and Death of a Taxman (Started by finding a dead body north-west of the town on a very small peninsula)

Lastly, if you aren't committed to your character, make a Bretton with the Atronach starsign. Several reasons for this. Brettons have increased max magicka and magicka resistance, which becomes REALLY useful about 20 mins in (if you know where to go and run there as soon as you can) so you can wear the Boots of Blinding Speed. The boots are supposed to make your screen black while increasing your Speed to +200. With the 50% magic resist, you only get a dimmed screen, so you can run around MUCH FASTER. Also, the Atronach starsign means that you don't regen magic when you sleep, but you absorb 50% of all spells that hit you. This effect is not available on a permanent basis through the rest of the game. Regening magic becomes SUPER easy when you get the Summon Ghost spell, because attacking him will then make him cast a bunch of spells on you and restore your magic to full, sometimes within only 2 seconds. Other characters will have to sleep to restore their magic.

The only downside to this is that the Brettons do not get any combat skill bonuses starting out, so it might make your miss chance a few percent higher with your weapons. It might hurt just a little in the short term, but be "OMG AWESOME" late game. If you want to play the game for the short term, just pick a Nord with the Thief sign, because they are immune to frost damage and the Thief boosts your attributes by 30 points (only two levels worth, but it's a great start).

Also, listen to PoisonUnagi, because his advise is great for the long-term. I forgot about the Morrowind Code Patch. It fixes so many issues it's not even funny. Some of which even made the game more immersive (like the bartering "fix" that makes more sense, but is more unforgiving). If you want any other tips, let me know.

I suggest joining one of the Dunmer Great Houses or at least one of the guilds. All the Great House questlines end up with you getting your very own house/tower/fortress(depends on what house you join).
Hlaalu is probably the best one if he wants to join a Great House early in the game.
True, plus the house you get in the end is the easiest to access. It's right there in Balmora, while the places you get for the other two Great Houses are in the middle of nowhere. Although, the other two places are more flashy(a fortress filled with mercenaries and a tower with sphere centurions as guards). But to join Hlaalu you would need to have high speech and barter to advance if I can remember correctly(they're basically merchants and love profit after all). While Redoran is more of a warrior oriented House, and Televanni is for magic users.
For some reason I always hated Telvani. Weren't they the ones with slaves? Maybe that's why I hated them. I was so immersed in Morrowind. I gotta reinstall it one of these days.

There are two levels and a few hundred gold worth of quests and caves in and around Seyda Neen. Hang around there for a while and get a feel for combat. Find the wood elf's hiding spot. Find the body in the woods and investigate his murder. Find the mage that fell from the sky, and loot his body. Don't use the scrolls; sell them. There's a skooma smuggler's den just around the corner from the slit strider: clean it out. While there, free some slaves. Steal much, save often, and when you've picked the place clean, go find Caius in Balmora.

Yes, they're the faction that supported slavery. I only did their questline once, and I must say that they really are a bunch of bastards. I never liked Hlaalu either, they're just so corrupt. I always ended up joining Redoran. It really is a very immerisve game.

Find the Talking Mudcrab. He is somewhere south of the Azura Shrine. I thinks thats the name probably not. It'd be better if you google that though. Or level up to 63. That was my highest morrowind level.
I made a video showing where he is. Apparently it's quite a popular video too, 31,622 views!!

I'd suggest doing small sidequests in Seyda Need and Balmora until you reach level 10, advancing in the Mages, Fighters and Thieves guilds a little too. Then you'll be set to go out and explore.

Try searching for the old wet note, in a bottle on the seabed waaay up north. Oh, and the one and only muffin. While you're at it, if you're early in the game, very quickly sort yourself out with some water breathing potions and then activate the Bothias Shrine quest. You need to do it within 30 days of starting apparently.

You'll love the quest reward, guaranteed. If you need any pointers then I can help :)
lol and i had to find the little guy without any help....that sucks in retro spec lol.
He was a tricky bastard to find, especially when you're in the mindset of attacking every mudcrab on sight!

I made the video on a whim, I never thought it would reach over 30,000 views. There sure is a whole lotta Morrowind love out there!

It is a Great game. The freedom is a huge part of its love.
Best game I've ever played. Considering the huge amount of glitches and screw ups in it, it's amazing that, in my mind, it can still hold that special place in my heart.

The little easter eggs, like the corpse of Indiana Jones, just made it totally legendary!

OP: When you get to level 15, go for Umbra (just across the hills from Suran) and the Azuras Shrine quest (to get Azuras Star). Both are things that'll make life a lot easier in the long run.

You had HOW MUCH GOLD!?

And do you know just how fast were you flying back there, son?

OT: If you have the GOTY edition, I'd suggest a quick jaunt up to Solthsteim to do the Raven Rock quests. You get a house at the end, and the quests are easy as pie. Just be prepared to walk. A lot.

Many thoughts. First one, welcome to terrible crippling addiction; Morrowind ate a large chunk of my life some years back.
Second, Caius will give you some direction but feel free to level up before you get stuck into it.
I find, as a many-character starter, take a wander along the Bitter Coast from Seyda Neen, maybe head north and west up towards Gnaar Mok or east to Vivec.
If you've got any alchemy, you can gather so much random flora & fauna that you'll've got way better at it by the time you get anywhere.
Don't forget you need an enchanted sword, even 25gold worth of tiny flame damage will do, to get anything from tombs.
Don't go anywhere with oddly-geometried ruins unless you're feeling bold.
Join a couple of guilds and the right House depending on who you are and what you wanna do in life.
And when you find yourself out in the wilderness at night, just take a couple of moments to look up at that gorgeous night sky, watch the clouds drift across the moons...

Enjoy :)

PATIENCE and DETERMINATION. The game is really overwhelming in the beginning, and frustrating. It is hard to get into it ,but that's where its charm is. My favourite game ever.
Damn, now i want to reinstall it :-(

My favorite thing to do is kill everyone on the island, but you may want to hold off on doing that until you finish the game's many guilds.

Over 143 million. It's an XBox save too, so it's all earned legitimately by selling to the mudcrab!!

I know Morrowind and its tricks better than I know any of my family!

I'm befuddled by all of this misinformation of this thread. Morrowind is about 30% bigger than Oblivion. The talking Mudcrab Merchant is just to the east of Vivec, east of Bal Fell (is it? from memory). Azura's shrine is WAY east of all of this, like six miles. I just blitzed through the Mages and Fighters' guild quests, levelled through the experiences therein.

Oh man..... were to begin!?

I would suggest finding a good looking outfit, helping a few old ladys across the Odai river, and the destroying the entire population of town said old ladys live in.

nope.avi

Oblivion is 16 square miles, Morrowind is 10. However, Morrowind's a hell of a lot more interesting, and Tamriel Rebuilt bumps it up to about 20-22.

I'll do my best. Also, how big is the world? Bigger than Oblivion or not?
If you have the expansion packs? I think so.

Indiana Jones was in it? Where?
In one of the ancestral tombs, trapped under a rock. He had enough time before the end to scrawl a note!
