We do use our entire brain, but not all at once. It is used in roughly 10% intervals, but each part being used changes every second.PessimistOwl said:I know what you all mean about the brain, however, isn't that more of less the possible POTENTIAL of the brain. I mean, currently we only use about 5% of our brain. Sure, if we were able to use all of our brain, all of the mechanics and everything in it, the possibilities would be endless, but we can't... that's kind of the reason why I don't agree with that. I might IF we knew and could utilize all of our brain. Then that would be cool.
Loads of animals have immune systems and by comparison ours is quite weak an ineffective.PessimistOwl said:Hey there all, currently I am doing a biology course and as in all biology courses there is a section of it that includes the human body/ anatomy/ internal.
While re-learning all of this material (Because that is what education is, you just learn something then re-learn it over and over again only more in depth each time) I figured out even more about how truly amazing the human body is, how advanced our bodies are, and what all our bodies can do, even without us knowing.
I wanna know, what system or part, or other scientific terms that relate to the body that you find the most extraordinary. And why so?
I would have to say the Immune system, it works to fight off hostile and unknown viruses/organisms and while it's doing that, it creates protocols to ensure that you won't suffer from whatever it is fighting again.
Or in layman's terms: I think that the immune system is a pretty cool guy. eh fights off viruses and doesn't afraid of anything.
That's what THEY want you to believe.sinclose said:We know what it's does. It's completely useless other than forcing you to have an operation if you have the misfortune of food landing there.Dr Ampersand said:The appendix. So goddam awesome we don't know what it does.
Ah but the appendix provides a biological grenade which allows you to take out your foes.sinclose said:And THEY would be right, because wasting money and time in a vital operation due to a body part you have since birth sucks, no matter how you look at it.Dr Ampersand said:That's what THEY want you to believe.sinclose said:We know what it's does. Brain, definitely. And it is used in full, just most of it is involved in silly things like regulating hormones and temp, etc.PessimistOwl said:I know what you all mean about the brain, however, isn't that more of less the possible POTENTIAL of the brain. I believe the 10% myth started way back when scientist first started to record the brain activity. Back then, the equipment wasn't advanced enough, and the participant wasn't doing a variety of tasks - You don't use brain centers responsible for movement if you're lying still, for example.Billion Backs said:I used 100% of my brain once. Human's brain consists of many different areas responsible for different things. They all do their job, at least in most people.
The whole belief, which I came across quite often, that you're only using something like 1-10% of your brain and could become some kind of psychic ubermensch if you managed to activate 100% of it is just silly and absolutely baseless.
Although 'we' as in, the 'aware' owner of our bodies, cannot control the brain fully, it is being automaticly for autonomous body functions. Thus you can say it's being used at full capacity, although you're right in saying that we cannot control all of it. But imo being in full control of your body would be way to attention consuming, one would constantly have to focus on properly distrubing hormones, regulating body temperature, sending proper impulses to muscles etc.PayJ567 said:No, we don't. If we had full control from our brains we could control everything about us. We can't so we don't.killer-corkonian said:Yes. alot of brain answers i see, i disagree, if humans were so smart wed have the sense to stop trashing the planet we kinda live on
Can everyone please stop saying that? We use our brains to full capacity! It is honestly one of the most clichéd misconceptions ever. Oh, and just so I can beat you to the punch:

'round here we say "lower human horn".linkmastr001 said:I'd say i'm tied with the brain and our 'fun time' organs, since I'm not sure how I'm supposed to phrase the latter on this forum.
That's a myth; we use 100% of our brains, it's just that a lot of it isn't the higher-level brain functions. We use the higher-level brain functions on a concious level, but the lower-level brain functions run in the background to control things like breathing, heart-rate, processing sense inputs from our eyes, ears etc. , hormone control, temperature control, monitoring blood oxygen levels, monitoring all sorts of other things in the blood... the list goes on.PessimistOwl said:I know what you all mean about the brain, however, isn't that more of less the possible POTENTIAL of the brain. I guess I'm not the only one who took notice of the man's "we only use x% of our brains" claim. So many people believe or misunderstand what 'using' counts as that it's kinda scary.Thedutchjelle said:Although 'we' as in, the 'aware' owner of our bodies, cannot control the brain fully, it is being automaticly for autonomous body functions. Actually, you use 100% of your brain. You just use 5-10% of it for thinking, the rest is just maintaining your body.PessimistOwl said:I know what you all mean about the brain, however, isn't that more of less the possible POTENTIAL of the brain.
