I have a fetish for the Tall, dark and bishoujo stereotype girls, like Hatsuki from Yamibou, Chikane from Kannazuki no Miku.

Although, I have to go with Utena Tenjou from Revolutionary Girl Utena.

AHHH, she's so fucking awesome. <3

Watch the number of people who will agree with me when I say Lucy/Nyuu from Elfen Lied

I thought of Lucy instantly ... also Shion for Higurashi when she is all evil. That laugh. Manic

Well true, but I guess it really matters on what you consider badass?

I mean if you're talking unbelievably violent, inhuman proficiency in combat, stupidly insane levels of fortitude that transcends all reasonable ideals of narrative restraint when dealing with the 'suspension of disbelief' ... all with that seemingly quintessential douchebaggery you find in Marvel superheroes or any run of the mill anime ... then no ... Holo isn't a badass.

But if you consider the idea of someone who has raw natural talent to cause wholesale devastation, yet dcan use her words to same the effect? A natural talent for emotional blackmail, seduction, and a quick wit? I think she's actually the most actualized idea of a badass there is.

I would be far more frightened (in more ways then just fearing for my life) if Holo was my nemesis then any other possible opponent I have seen in anime ... male or female.

She's someone that would crush my heart, my assets, then take my life if I pushed the matter ...

Far more frightening then the generic sword/gun/magical baton of doom/mecha/etc etc etc wielding female <.<
She's certainly no less impressive than the ruthless actionettas in capability (and of course beat the living daylights out of them in characterization) but by the conventional meaning of the word she hardly qualifies.

She's powerful, resourceful, and stylish - more so and on more fronts than most mere gunslingers - but I'd think "badass" to be more of a particular approach one goes about things, and her ways aren't the extreme, uncompromising, brash, no-nonsense approach I for one believe the word's usually associated with. She reeks of class and sophistication instead.

Not that we really disagree on her (far more subtle and complex) "fear and awe" merits, only the terminology.

Toss up between these two for me.

The Major is epic win for her hacking skills, agility, cunning, military prowess, and the fact she has tried ripping open the hatch of a tank and fight against a military grade mech suit by herself, means she is really fucking badass.

Lucy is the perfect balance of amazingly cute girl and brutal killing machine, and dances between the two all the time. Her pink hair, horns that look like cat ears, and..."smarts" just add to that amazing-ness.

WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK SHE IS!?!? (canonically she's 14 so...yeah)
I thought of posting her, but the Major is definitely more badass than her.

/thread is a little presumptuous for a character nobody seems to know of but you...

Who is this person? What are they from? Why are they so badass?

I'm legitimately curious as they do look pretty cool...

That one girl Ghibli use in every film.

A character, rather than a charicature.

It's so hard to find well rounded female characters in a world so heavly saturated in stereotype. The flat well outweight the well rounded... or since this is to do with women that should be the other way around.
Fuck! I totally forgot about her D:
She's definitely as badass as The Major.
In Nausicaa, she stands in the front of a huge herd of giant metal bugs to try and stop them, despite her machine gun wounds.
In Princess Mononoke, she is strong enough and independent enough to not be a damsel-in-distress for Ashitaka to save every 5 seconds.

Yeah I guess so. I mean in the manga moreso than the anime, the picture she paints of the people and the village Pasloe in general was that it was a prison. Of which the festival of the end of the harvest is actually an innocent twist on the sinister way in which Holo found hyerself trapped in the land.

Which is quite depressing in more ways than one ... imagine people making light of the means of your imprisonment every year whilst cursing you every other harvest and treating you as a capricious being of which isn't reaklly deserving of any real gratitude.

And despite it all walking away from 4 centuries of that treatment with nary a glint of hatred or scorn o.o So I guess you're right. Your average gunslinging badass would just put bullets in people like a tool <.<

Of course I consider the ability to walk away without contempt despite such treatment as a sign of greater strength than just hurting people because she wants her payment in blood <.<

As much as I hate to affirm your statement. Nyuu is fairly bad ass.
Thats not technically true though. As Nyuu is the polar opposite of Lucy. She is literally harmless. Only Lucy is dangerous.
1 is the emotional defence of the other, they are in fact two different parts of the same person, making my statement valid.

Yeah, I know. Pedantic. :p

Ahaha, this thread seems to have gone down well...

I notice anyone who's watched Claymore is listing it =)

OT: One of the main reasons I started this thread was to gather together a load of these characters to find out what other stuff I might like to watch/read - and from the quantity of responses I can see that there are probably a lot of others hoping to do the same thing, I'm sure I saw a post back there about this being a good place to pick up new stuff.

So, with that in mind:

Which Series have these badass characters feature as the protagonist?

This isn't a change in thread, just something else will be helpful for me, and hopefully for others, in addition to the original.

Let's get the ball rolling:

Claymore, Shakugun no Shana, Murder Princess, Mai HiME, Birdy the Mighty, Madlax

These are just the ones I (I'm fairly new to anime) can confirm as badass, with my badass seal of approval, I have a huge list of others if anyone wants something else to try...

Hmm, this is beginning to look like it could use another thread, but if nobody minds I'll leave it here, say and I;ll repost under a new thread, or do it yourself, just thought it would be nice to have it in one place.

She also wins in the Yandere department of anime/manga. Yes. She outdo's the likes of even Sonozaki Shion.
