Cliche contribution in 3...2...1...

Cloud Strife.

You play through most of the game as a cool, detached mercenary, who periodically has some surprising mental episodes; 'flashes' of memory, subject to mind control (if I recall correctly, I think he tackles and batters Aeris at one point). The whole 'copy of sephiroth' deal was pretty weak, but to find out that he was just a grunt who ended up in an opportunity to pretty much take over Zack's (the real SOLDIER) life was enamoring to me, way back when, especially Cloud's dedication to that facade. I found it to be the kind of fucked up that any normal person could be.

Fuminori from Saya no Uta.

After a car accident, Fuminori ends up in hospital with a very rare brain condition. Our 'hero' sees the world like this:

...and he sees his friends like this:

Needless to say, this drives him a few miles beyond insanity.

So yeah, I suppose that 'Fucked up' is an accurate way to describe him.

Albedo from the Xenosaga games.

I don't think I've ever seen a character arc more beautifully written. From his start in the first game (*Shudder* that scene with MOMO) to finding out his story in Ep. II, and then wrapping it all up in Episode III. Holy shit. I went from HATING him to his being my favorite character.

Rorschach from Alan Moore's Watchmen. I'm struggling to write why so instead I will implore you to read the graphic novel and watch the film. He's insane, but you may find yourself rooting for him.
I second that. Rorschach was a great character.

Now to ruin him for you!

I quite like Teryn Loghain from Dragon Age: Origins. I like the idea of a great leader/freedom fighter doomed by his paranoia to become as bad or worse than what he's paranoid of.

Are those Mage characters in the rulebook stories? If so I have to go read it right now! Only skimmend over some basic mage mechanis and lore so I could use them in my chronicle as NPCs.
And since you seem to know some stuff about them, are WoD mages long lived or do they have normal life-span? Couldn't find it in the book.

OT:
As for my contribution to the thread, well, most of my favorites were already mentioned. Johan from Monster, just about anyone from Berserk (namely Gutts, Griffith and the most adventureous tofu known to man - Casca).

To continue in anime characters: Lucy from Elfen Lied
Ostrachised as a child due to being of the new breed, percived betrayel by her only friend and spent her teens locked in a lab. Proceedes to murder just about everyone on her escape, gets shot in the head and then the story stars.

Moving away from Japan, baron Valdimir Harkonnen from The Dune (by Frank Herbert) is one fucked up royal. Morbidly obesse (moves thanks to levitating pants), favorite music is industrial cacophony and hobbies include raping, murdering then raping again of little boys. How he managed to have two sons would be a mystery, were it not for the fact that when raping someone, gender doesn't seem to matter to him. His sons are also messed up in their own right, maybe because their "nanny" was a genius sociopath and assassin in barons employ.

From FullMetal Alchemist, Solf J. Kimblee. Kimblee is a complete and udder PSYCHOPATH! He kills everyone he wants in Ishval because it pleases him, he betrayed and killed his own officers "Because I could"(while uber-ed on a Philosopher's Stone), he gets a kick out of looking his victims in the eyes while he kills them
He gets absorbed into Prides Philosopher's Stone, AND IS ABLE TO MAINTAIN HIS INDIVIDUALITY BECAUSE "THE SCREAMING SOOTHS ME"!!!

Jacket from Hotline Miami definitely deserves a place here, as well as the Claymores from Claymore and more than a few characters in Berserk.

Ah, yes, the Narrator from The Stanley Parable. He's a douche.

Rand al'Thor from the Wheel of time.

He starts out as sheperd that is picked up by an Aes Sedai (think of an all- female magic organisation with tons of influence)after his village is attacked by a small force of The Dark One's (the Big Bad) monsters. He escapes with his friends and the Aes Sedai while being chased by a large fucking force of monsters. He finds out that he is destined to become the saviour for the forces of good in The Last Battle (Armageddon), that he is a male magic user who usually go insane due to The Dark One's taint, that he is a reincarnation of the previous saviour who helped reduce a techno-magical world into a medieval dark age and became insane.

while trying to unite the world he has:

-been branded
-stabbed twice by two magical weapons
-forced to run, hide and outsmart very powerful evil magical users (the Forsaken).
-conquer a lot of kingdoms
- learnt that he is going to destroy society
-forced to deal with Aes Sedai, nobles and leaders from trying to manipulate him
-has a separate personality of his previous reincarnation in his head
-created a list of dead women in his head that he feels responsible for and repeats constantly
-been mind-raped
-been trapped in a box
-got his hand burnt off
-forced to take part in battles in which he is responsible for a large amount of kills, on both sides.
-nearly forced to kill his lover by a sadistic Forsaken

I would state more but its hard to paraphrase the series.

By the end of all this, you have a very powerful, very angry insane person with a nihlistic personality. It nearly doesn't end well.

His development from a helpless shepard to a fucking psycho messiah with PTSD, schizophrenia and a whole load of other disorders is absolutely amazing and is one of the major reasons why I love the books.

Planescape: Torment's party members (and main character) count as this I feel, though they're not so much crazy bonkers (except for Ignus and I'd say Vhailor) as they are broken, tormented individuals who are nevertheless not angsty emo whiners for a moment. And I believe they are all amazing.

Also got reminded of Vaas from Far Cry 3. I wouldn't describe the game's story and characters as particularly brilliant, but I make an exception for him. The voice actor's amazing performance is what sells it, of course, but holy shit. He's a goddamn presence.

Jamissia Capra from This Alien Shore. She has a lot of people in her head of various ages/sexes, and the hardware to support it.

Light Yagami from Deathnote.

Kamala from Feast of Souls etc. She is a lot like me, only with the sorcery and the immortality. It IS on my to-do list though ._.

Gerald Terrant aka The Prophet aka The Hunter aka The Neocount of Marentha from Black Sun Rising etc. Seriously, read the prologue of Black Sun Rising and tell me you don't want to know what happens to that charming fellow.

Navarre Burville from the Soldier Son trilogy. If you can read all 3 books and not feel sorry for the shit he had to go through just to stop that highway from being built, then you are a sick bastard. The gold was there the whole fucking time, that's all I'll say.

Andross Guile from the Lightbringer series. Craaaaaaaaaaazy. Lionel Luthor with magic pretty much.

Shane from Walking Dead: Despite the many, many chances he was given tom put things right, he lies, he cheats, he goes out of his way to hurt the ones who love him because he's sad he isn't in charge? Get over it

Brody from Homeland is a delicious cocktail of confused loyalty, misplaced love/trust and honour.

These are very recent characters I know, but they are in my head at the moment!

Hmm... Cersei Lannister is a pretty twisted ****

I'm sure I'll think of others later but I'ma supposed to be working!!

I am ashamed to have the snake wheel avatar and not think of Rand or anyone else From WoT like say Damendred who became one Of the Forsaken because he was always considered second best to Lews Therin. And lets not even get started on Padan Fain

Eddie Low (the serial killer) from GTA IV.

I got to the place he told me to go but I had to wait for about ten minutes to see what other abjectly terrifying things Rockstar dared to make him say.

I gotta go with what is no doubt one of the most unpopular characters in game history: Raiden.

I had the good fortune of entering the series with MGS2 so the character wasn't a disappointment of my expectations rather just an interesting story unfolding before me, and what a story Raiden has:

Former child soldier being sent on a mission to kill the man who raised him into that life as well as killed his parents all while his pregnant girlfriend keeps asking him vaguely what day it is, not to mention his rogue AI commander who seems to get his cyber-jollies by fucking with the man. The whole game is basically one big torture session for Raiden, almost like a really subtle survival horror game, and when he returns in 4 those emotional scars and additional events show their effect. I think that's why Kojima gave him the happy ending, because he had the worst time of it.

That said, it's hard to tell all the fucked up things that happened to him because Jack spends his days and nights repressing everything, which is possibly the most fucked up thing about him because that tendency seems to lead him right back to the conflicts he sought to forget.

Who says Kojima can't write?

The lots of people and things are from the Mage: the Awakening line, Night Horrors - the Unbidden supplement. Also, my favourite supplement for any WoD line. I do recommend it - you can easily use the stuff from there in the old Mage, or even other game lines (there is a fear powered cell phone - a self aware, intelligent cellphone that tries to scare the shit out if its owner. I'd love to see it fall into the hands of a Malkavian!). Voormas is from Mage: the Ascension - he's spread out through many books, you can see him in the Euthanatos tradition book, for example, also makes an appearance in Ascension.

Both the new and the old Mage characters have normal lifespans. They are actually absolutely normal. But they do have access to magic, so they can prolong their lives, and even reincarnate. In the old Mage it's quite easy for them to even transfer their soul/mind (or both) into a successor, so they are born again, for example, or they could just use Life to be unaging. Also, retreating beyond the Gauntlet grants them certain measure of immmortality or at least leeway. But many (foolishly) try to obtain "cheap" immortality using vampires, mostly. Yeah, we've seen how the Tremere turned out - both the old and the new.
