I've got one.

Kain from the Legacy of Kain series.

Okay, so get this. Dude starts out as a noble, looking for a place to stay for the night, gets killed on the streets and goes to what I imagine is Hell, is resurrected by a necromancer as a vampire and finally finds out that it's his destiny to die to pretty much fix the world.

And he refuses. The world falls into ruin, and he takes over the world as a vampire overlord, resurrecting long dead heroes of the Sarafan, who essentially function as vampire hunters, as his underlings. I never played past what I believe is halfway though Soul Reaver 2, so I can't say much more. And then there's Simon Templeman. Say what you will about him, but he does one kickass tormented antihero act.

Didn't see him mentioned there.
Theon Greyjoy of "Games of Thrones" series, as he is by "Dance with Dragons" book.
I really don't want to spoil but "You must remember your name" still gives me creeps.

And also Hanzel and Gretel from "Black Lagoona"
Twin brother and sister, both are orphaned children who, when even younger, went through underground porn ring and later forced to fight other children to death; both are very, very broken and are remorseless killers but even if their story is short, a viewer can understand why they are this way.

Oh, and Captain Martin Walker from Spec Ops: The Line. Being actually broken by the way of the game with the player as that force that drives him into madness.

I would rather not to use the word "beautifully" to describe their history and history of many other characters in that tread. There was nothing beautiful about what those people had to go through, I think.

P.S. Forgot Deadpool, so - Deadpool (I actually think he'd made much better villain for Batman than Joker.)

Does it have to be from a game? If not I choose Ms. Coulter from the His Dark Materials trilogy

Seriously, that is probably the biggest cliffhanger I have ever seen. It hurts me to know that I have to wait until the summer to see the conclusion.

OT: Aside from Walter White, I'll go with the Joker from TDK. No real motive other than wanting to cause as much chaos as possible in sadistic and emotionally disturbing ways.

Also, I'll put another one in for Handsome Jack. At first he just seems like a funny, douchebag, asshole. Then you see some of the shit he's willing to do and he becomes quite dark and twisted but somehow never losing his wacky charm.

We're talking favorite Lunatics here? alright, I've got a lot, but here's my two favorites:
James is one of my favorites because while he's clearly damaged, he's still very human and relatable, which is accentuated by Guy Cihi's amazing voice work. He's a good type of depressing, mellow psychopath.

Caleb from Blood. He's completely insane, but somehow completely loveable; everything he says is pure gold (even when it's a quote). Half of his dialogue is maniacal laughter, and frankly, it can be hard not to laugh with him.
Plus, who can NOT like an undead mentally unstable gunslinger with a thirst for revenge and a hatred of mimes yet unseen?

I forgot before, but I need to add Simon from Misfits. The guy's been pushed around and bullied most of his life, and is a complete neurotic mess because of it. He's on community service because he finally decided to take revenge on a bully... By dumping a flaming bag through his letter slot to burn the guy's house down. However, upon realising that the family's cat would get burned too, he decides to put out the fire. By pissing through the letter slot that we put the bag through. Seems like the only fucked up character in this thread who's not dangerously psychotic in one way or another.

Then he has this whole brilliant character arc that ends on one of the most bittersweet notes imaginable. Plus he becomes a badass. [small]And that chest...[/small]

I second that. Rorschach was a great character.

Now to ruin him for you!

I believe the correct answer to that last comic is Dr. Manhattan asking "Why would I want to eat at a place that has no steaks in?".

Bioware has a habit of writing almost all of their characters as varying degrees of fucked up. It makes said characters interesting and three-dimensional, sure, but it's true. The poster boy of this is Jacob from Mass Effect... because he was the one character that wasn't particularly fucked up, and thus he was decried as bland. (Which he was, don't get me wrong. But I'm just sayin'...)

Aside from that... hm. Guts from Berserk has been mentioned, but I have to counter that with Griffith, also from Berserk. He has been told that he is going to become a great person of the age, and thus believes it to be true: and to accomplish this, he rallies a band of mercenaries to him... but has to sell himself out to a pedophile nobleman to get funding for his band. He knows very little other than war, and seems to only be seducing a princess to further his goals of becoming someone great. He finally meets a person who he believes understands him... and that person promptly leaves, causing him to briefly lose sight of his goal and sleep with the princess he was seducing, which leads to him getting captured, tortured, beaten within an edge of his life, and barely able to hold a sword. And he certainly can't lead anymore, even after he gets rescued, considering his tongue was cut out.

In the end, he's so broken that he thinks the only way he can accomplish his dreams is to sacrifice everyone he's been fighting beside in a deal with the devil. All the people who have followed him, gone, including a girl who was in love with him and a guy who he claimed was one of his only friends and his only equal... and he agrees. Which leads to one of the most messed-up conclusions of a story arc that I have ever seen.

I haven't had time to read the whole topic but...I hope I'm not the first to mention Therese and Jeannette Voerman from Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines.

I have never seen a more fucked up pair of sisters in my life. 0_0

---

Then there is Gunther Herman from Deus ex 1. Total nutjob. Loyal to the end, but also psychotic, probably in love with a doomed character, and desperate to kill anything he hates in the most violent way possible. And HE VANTED ORANGE, BUT IT GAVE HIM LEMON LIME!

---

Then there's Gaige, the Mechromancer of Borderlands 2. I mean....go on youtube and look up her echo logs. She starts off slightly unbalanced, and by the last one, you are both thinking she's insane, and also feeling a lot of pity for her too.

.....And that's not even mentioning tiny tina. OH GOSH TINY TINA. That is insanity incarnate.

---

Half the cast of Psychonauts. Pretty much everyone you meet in that game has some kind of mental disorder. And you need to go INTO their brains. Including a manic-AGRESSIVE woman whose entire life plays out for you on a stage in her own mind, and another guy whose mind is a twisty turvy crazy conspiracy in which he trusts nobody (including HIMSELF).

---
Also I think I'll just name drop Spec Ops the Line, and say no more. :p

Personally, I'm going with Sweet Tooth. I mean seriously, I psychotic clown that kills everybody while driving an ice cream truck? The earlier models get bonus points for actually looking like an (almost) unassuming truck.

By coincidence I am listening to Dancing Mad as performed by the Black Mages, so I am going to say...Jack from Mass Effect. It seems a miracle that she is even functional after all the things that she has experienced.

Not only is he a sadistic bastard that kills and tortures for the sheer fun of it, by the end of the game he is a sadistic bastard with godlike power.

Half the characters in any anime written by Gen Urobuchi. If he is the writer in charge, it's a good indication at least one character will be in tears at some part of the story. His fans have given him the nickname the "butcher" because of his previous work.

Agreed, although Raz's turns out to be pretty shallow.

I know, I was way behind and watched them from the start on Netflix (obviously not in one go, spread out over a few weeks), so never really experienced another cliffhanger. I eventually caught up and got to the halfway point of season 5. I can't believe how long I now have to wait to find out what's going to happen. It's gonna be amazing.

I'd be very surprised if he doesn't end up dead. I just can't wait see how it's going to happen!

That was the greatest scene both story wise and hilarity wise.

Cara,Denna (all the mord-sith really i guess) and Nicci form the Terry Goodkind novels. They are just such twisted characters. Especially Nicci. Her dad was the only one to try and save her from what was going to happen to her.He was the only person in that messed up town to realise they were being unfairly manipulated.
