one game that has failed in the ending department was final fantasy X-2...there was no point in the game either. agreed?

most bizzare everything ever belongs to skull monkeys for PS1 in my eyes, every single cut scene was random as hell, the levels had no story so every cut scene was nothing like the last with no evidence of a plot...ever 
looking back on it i think if anything like it was tried to be done again it fail miserably.

The ending of System Shock 2 - after marvelous immersion and true paranoia sets in for the entire game, the final cutscene where your character goes "nah" and shoots SHODAN in the face is so anticlimactic it completely ruins the mood. And if that's not enough they have an inexplicable bit where SHODAN actually possesses a woman on the shuttle, in what is a disappointingly blatant attempt to set up a sequel (which I wish they'd finally get around to making).
Shadow of the Colossus had a pretty out-there ending, but it all made (some sort of) sense and ended up being rather emotional. This is a very useful FAQ for all things story-related to SotC.

One of the very few games that made go from "mh...not bad" to "woah, that was surprisingly good" out of nowhere was the Folklore with its ending.
It gets you by surprise as in "the sixth sense" and really makes you reconsider what happened throughout all the game and why it always felt kind of "strange".
