Pretty much every Call of Duty. I'd say Gears of War, but I don't see many third person shooters in general, so it's hard to say the gameplay is generic. Just the characters.

When we're attempting to portray most games in existence as "generic", we could most likely refer to a large portion of them. Whether adventure, action, or fps, each game can commonly relate in some fashion to another particular game or series. After all, a lot of the great titles that we have today came from inspiration while others were entirely unique.

There are, however, different levels of which we could define a game as being generic. While most would beg and differ that Halo is entirely generic, it was the first of it kind to employ cinematic and story-driven mechanics into gameplay while mostly taking a lot of notes from the Alien trilogy in terms of dialogue, encounters, and plot. So yes, while being defined as mildly generic, the game did possess some characteristics that made it itself, as followed by the later versions.

I believe that we could be harshly exaggerating the levels at which Halo could be defined as a generic series.

If you want to see actual titles that resemble their counterparts entirely, take a look at most MMORPGs out on the market today. How about that new Chinese FPS that was recently announced which looks exactly like Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield Heroes if they had a bastard child.

That is generic.

Dragonage was quite generic, although I did really enjoy it.

but if you wasn't some really bad generic games, Id have to direct you to 90% of the Wii's games. There were so many uninspired low budget games on that system.

Also, pretty much every sports game ever released, (madden, tony hawk, etc)

My I propose minecraft? Think about it before calling me a troll. Its a game, with a pretty bland world (sure there is a LOT of unique BLAND to explore, but think of how much there really is) and at the time of this post, we have... 4 normal enemy types, and 2 special, with only a hand full of tools, and a BUILDING BLOCK SIMULATOR. The most interesting things that have come from it have been user created, painstakingly built generic fantasy adventures or remakes of existing games, in in a very limited game engine. Sure, multiplay is neat, but not vanilla... id say its mediocre...

Sorry for picking apart your game notch... at least terraria has a handful of enemy types and weapons....

maybe im just an action gamer... meh!

Transformers War for Cybertron, absolutely nothing shined out in that game, it was just so bland.
Are there dozens of indistinct games in which one plays giant, transforming robots on machine worlds that aren't based upon the Transformers license? No.Then it isn't generic.

Generic doesn't mean bland, it just means that it doesn't stand out from the crowd in any way or can easily be confused for the competition.
Store brand foods or drugs are generic even if they taste better than the name brands. Many car designs are generic to the point where one won't know who made them unless one looks at the manufacturer's logo.

Section 8 is a good example of a generic sci-fi game. That doesn't mean that it is bad, it just fits the stereotype of sci-fi FPS to a tee right down to the power armor designs, vehicles designs and futuristic weapon types.
It's not necessarily the most by-the-number copy-paste shooter there is but it doesn't do much to set it apart from other games that followed Halo's lead.

The first CoDs (including 4) were pretty revolutionary games, THEY were the ones that started trends, and you can't go out calling the originator generic, the same with GoW, that game popularised and polished the game play it contains to a mirror shine, along with being pretty unique when it came out.

I think a lot of people in this thread appear to me incapable of understanding that the franchise that started something isn't generic, it's not the games fault OTHER people copied it.

I'm pretty sure that the very first call of duty was anything but generic. It was one of the first (if not the first) shooter set in a real life setting, as opposed to space or other worlds.

These days however, I can't say I am excited about Call of Duty. The single player experience is shorter than an acid trip and I don't give a flying shit about multi player.
No it wasn't, Medal of Honor 1 came out in 1999 and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the first WW2 shooter (lets not count Wolfenstien 3D, it was pretty alternate reality, what with Robot Hitler and all), not to say CoD1 wasn't fantastic when it came out, it just was no where near to the first shooter to be set in a realistic setting.

Generic doesnt mean bad or good, to me the most generic games are the CoD5-what ever. They made a good setup in CoD4 and pump out a new game Madden-style every year. To many they had the best game design and I'd wager its the best for a console so it would be stupid to break the mold by changing things, that doesn't make it any less generic. If you look up what people have done with weapon skinning and mods it would not be a big endeavor to reskin the weapons, polish the graphics and UI, and add a few game modes and turn CoD4 into Black Ops.

For a game of generic rating, as much as it pains me, if you had never heard of Duke Nukem, DNF would be the most generic game i've ever played. All the minigames are cute but if you don't like Duke's character there is not much of a game there.

Modern Combat: Domination, it has NO atmosphere and its like a slow paced CoD with no perks or killstreaks. And it's only team deathmatch.

Because, from my experience with time splitters, all you do is run around in small arenas killing people, monkeys, and robots. And you do this with weapons that are barely above COD as far as creativity goes.

The 'story' for left 4 dead is pretty generic... but I think that's the point.

I love how all the games people are saying are generic are also the most successful games of the decade. Stuff like Bioshock that sells OK is really a bit of both and indie (aka non-generic) games sell very little. It's like generic-ness depends on the number of sales.

Halo, is a great example here. It was one of the first shooters I ever played and I couldn't get into it. I basically decided shooters aren't for me, but then I played Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 1/2, so maybe it wasn't shooters that was the problem, it was Halo.

Also, all the Lego licensed character platformer/action games after Lego Star Wars (The first one), I couldn't get into the others even with co-op and my brother. And I love Indiana Jones and Batman (Never tried the Harry Potter one, don't plan on it). They started out fun, but then the novelty runs out and you realize it's the same lame collectathon over and over again. Now that I think about it, any platformer that's just a collectathon could be thrown in here. I couldn't get into Banjo-Kazooie or Prince of Persia (2008) either.
