the Killzone franchise. Absolutely nothing makes it stand out from the rest.

Killzone. There is nothing. Literally NOTHING that makes it in any way interesting at all on any level. It is the single blandest, most boring game that is only popular because it is an exclusive. It isn't bad, per se, just utterly unoriginal in every possible way.
Not really - it was one of the first FPS games to have a working cover system and one of the first to have a real weight system that felt like it meant something on its guns. It's most certainly not what I'd call "original", but it isn't entirely lacking in that department.

Gears of War.
*Ducks*
Come on. Space Marines versus Aliens? Chest High Walls? Improbably muscled heros wearing space armour? Regenerating health? Brown filtered graphics?
Actually works really well as a spoof.
I have to call you out on this one. Killswitch supposedly did the cover system thing first, but Gears of War did it well. It might have been a brown bro-shooter, but in 2006 it did something most brown bro-shooters didn't, and that was do something different with its material. It was the game that really made shooting from cover interesting and fun.
EDIT: I also find your use of the word "duck" fairly ironic, considering the game you chose to mention.

Fear 3. Play it, and you'll know why.
For campaign, maybe, but the multiplayer is at least different.
I quoted all of you to point out that all of these at least did something different, Gears of War especially so. They're not shining examples of originality, but they're not completely devoid of anything new.
As for me? My vote goes toward...uh...
Uncharted. Surprise! I know someone's going to call me out on this, and it's not a bad game, but it doesn't really do anything for me. The entire game should be right up my alley but when I play it I don't have any fun, I don't get frustrated, I'm just going through the right actions. I can't find anything unique about it, just a mishmash of a bunch of different genres that doesn't master anything except how to make the most generic Hollywood character possible. This is a real shame for me to say because Naughty Dog made the second best trilogy on the PS2 (Jak and Daxter) and the best one on the PS1 (Crash Bandicoot).
