The AI companions in Dead Rising 2. Those guys are probably the most enjoyable escort quests I've ever played in a game... mostly because they can fight, can follow behind you without being dragged by the nose, you can actually GIVE them weapons (including guns) if they don't have one, and they've actually got a decent amount of health.

Hell, a great strategy for the game is to gather alot of AI partners before a tough section. And these are the guys you are supposed to be PROTECTING.

Dead Rising 2 would have been HELLISH if the AI sucked, but thankfully it's pretty damn good.

Gears Of war three had pretty useful AI team mates who could help quite a bit.
Also Left For Dead, specifically 2, had really good AI.

Did we play different games or something? o_O The A.I. in Dead Rising was infuriating for me, enough to the point where I just said "Fuck it" and let them die.

They kind of sucked in Dead Rising 1, but they were way better in Dead Rising 2. So much so, that they kind of got nerfed a bit in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. They're still competent enough to hold their own with a decent, but you have to keep an eye on them still.

Star Wars: Republic Commando has stellar squad AI. It's not perfect (Sev, take cover behind the wall-NO NOT IN FRONT OF IT!), but it's a damn sight better than most games I've played.

I just wish that the squad members didn't feel to interchangeable when it comes to performing certain tasks. For example, why can Sev and Fixer arm or defuse a bomb just as quickly as Scorch, even though he's supposed to be the demolitions expert?

I felt the AI for your fellow Space Marines in Warhammer 40K Space Marine were pretty good. They were in a realm that they didn't steal kills but at times you could genuinely see them helping. I think it's that they seem to stun the enemy first then after a bit longer actually kill them.

If not that then I'd say Halo: Reach was pretty good. They were reliable but as always couldn't drive vehicles properly so they gun, you drive. Still at least they had decent aim.

Mesmer AI in Guild Wars. Interrupts LIKE A BOSS.
I frakin' love mesmers, so I tried to make one, turns out I am terrible at interrupts -__- But yea they must be programmed to interrupt a milisecond after you click your spell. Lol.

Best ones I've ever encountered: 007 Nightfire ON GAMECUBE. On any other system, it can eat a bag of dicks.

Hmmm. I'd probably have to say the bots in Quake 3 Arena. Very competent indeed.

They didn't exist.

I'm really not a fan of any AI teammates. Though Alyx Vance was amazingly competent in Half-Life 2. I was also somewhat impressed with some of the companions in New Vegas. They weren't amazing but they function rather well after most of the patches were released and most of them were useful in combat.

I'd have to say as far as competency goes, the A.I. team mates from Star Wars: Republic Commando are by and far better than any others I've ever seen. Seriously, I've yet to play another game (never played this "Freespace") where I could give my entire team very specific orders, and they proceed to carry out those orders without staring at me confused-like or getting stuck on walls, objects, each other, ect. *Proceeds to glare angrily at Mass Effect 2.*
You beat me to it.

In fact, they were too competent. If you died at the end of the game, they could clear it for you. No game has ever done that to my knowledge.

Rainbow Six: Vegas (1+2). They actually moved where you wanted them to go, they could clear rooms well and sometimes they were too good, just one shotting everything while you hung back. This is all considering they didn't get stuck at the start of the level but yeah, much better improvement over the old Rainbow Six games where the AI were either killing machines or fucktards screaming down their headsets.

The AI in Left 4 Dead always managed to piss me off somehow. Specifically Louis. On more than 1 occasion he stood over me as I was incapped and did not even attempt to pick me back up, allowing me to die. Then there is the issue of the AI constantly using up pills or adrenaline when they don't really need it (ie, at somewhere around 55% health).

But L4D2 improved on some of that, although temporary health item usage is still awful (IMO).

On the plus side, they all have superb accuracy and can spot special infected from what seems like 5 miles away.

Fallout New vegas companions felt like this to me.

You can have them wait if certain foes would easily kill them, they carrry their own weight in battle, and somtimes do better than me.

Samurai warriors 2: I asked those A.I's to just stay put and not to do/touch/or really try to do anything while i went in and did the actual fighting. They obeyed my order and i went on to slaughter armies without having to worry about those idiots stumping their toes on a stick and babysit them every waking second....yeah, as can be guessed, i hold practically no respect for friendly A.I

I'd have to third the AI in Gears 3.

They're pretty good at executing opponents, helping you up and firing on your target. For 98% of the time they behaved very much like you'd expect a human to play.

Oh, whoops. I meant to say Dead Rising 2. In fact, I DID say it the second time, but I forgot the "2" the first time I said it. Fixed.
