Most competent AI teammates you've seen in a game.

I can't really recall a teammate AI that impressed me.

The only AI that has left a lasting impression on me was FEAR 1's. I distinctly remember engaging a small squad and thinking myself clever for hiding behind a sewer tank that provided an advantageous firing angle. Little did I know that they were not trying to kill me. They were actually providing cover fire to the guy who promptly snuck up behind me unnoticed and one-shot killed me with a pistol whip to the head.

Freaked the hell out of me when my vision suddenly turned red. I caught a glimpse of my killer as my head hit the floor.

Gears Of war three had pretty useful AI team mates who could help quite a bit.
Also Left For Dead, specifically 2, had really good AI.
This. Pretty much the only two that spring to mind.

I love the fan reasoning for having no allies in 1 is that Caim's men were so scared of him that they didn't want to die by their commander's hands XD.

The AI in 2 was... Painful.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Persona 3: FES yet. Seriously, the AI teammates were pretty handy in that game, if a bit frustrating at times.

Does it count if you use the "Advanced Tactics Mod" for Dragon Age and then set a huge page of combat conditions to make them semi-competent?

Barring that I would say "Freespace", "Persona 3 FES", or "Fallout New Vegas". The only reason I bring up New Vegas is cause Boone is a beast.

Star Wars: Republic Commando has stellar squad AI. It's not perfect (Sev, take cover behind the wall-NO NOT IN FRONT OF IT!), but it's a damn sight better than most games I've played.

I just wish that the squad members didn't feel to interchangeable when it comes to performing certain tasks. For example, why can Sev and Fixer arm or defuse a bomb just as quickly as Scorch, even though he's supposed to be the demolitions expert?
I agree completely. Brilliant AI, wonderful characters, wish they had been different from one another in combat. Telling anyone other than Sev to snipe...it just felt wrong.

SWAT 4...they fumble their grenades, and want to stand in very precise places, and have to be told to handcuff people or pick stuff up, but when it comes to a firefight, they are generally reliable.

Star Wars: Republic Commando.

Granted, the AI commands were pretty simple, but when you told them to do something, they did it, and did it well.

This is the only game I've ever played where I actually trusted doing non-combat objectives while my teammates defended me.

So I picked up Freespace 2 a few months ago and I was utterly amazed at how relatively competent your wingmen can be (I say relatively, because the AI still messes up on things like taking out the enemy's weapons systems). Your wingmen can take out enemy fighters tailing you, intercept enemy bombing runs, and take out capital ships while you're taking care of something else.

All in all, it was really refreshing from being the usual "one man army" in video games or as I like to call it "Ramirez Syndrome," and this game was released in 1999.

What other games have you had where AI teammates could actually complete mission objectives on their own without making the game too easy?
Oh yeah, I just finished my first playthrough of the main Freespace 2 campaign and yeah, the AI is really nice. I was really impressed when I first realised could order my wings to protect a ship and they would actually do a good job, especially how they would properly target bombs in transit. For me the best part in the entire game was when I targetted an enemy cruiser and commanded all fighters to focus on it. Moments later I'm surrounded by half-a-dozen fighters as we all swoop in, firing off dozens of tornado missles. It was awesome.

Somebody mentioned SW: Republic Commando, and I've gotta agree. One of a very few games where the AI was a legitimate asset. Also, it had probably the most intuitive and powerful squad controls i've seen.

Well, I'm not here to talk about AI teammates in particular, but I've heard the enemy AI of F.E.A.R. 3 is really agressive and everything(mysef not adding much more to that because I didn't play enough through the game to be able to judge it).

Oh yeah, I think I should say that the AI of Battlefield 3 is mildly decent as well, but it's not like anyone cares about the AI when you've got a game as intense as Battlefield 3. If that game were a person, then upon meeting you, it would find a lead pipe and beat you to unconsciousness with it. Then it would let you regain consciousness, get up, and then it would knock you out again.
Know what's weird Battlefield 3 actually had damn good companion AI.

OT: The was thisPS2 game I had like 5-6 years ago. Something about WW2 air battles. Anyway the plane you flew in with actually took targets out on the ground if the skies were clear. Hit most of the time too.

Ironically an old lady in deadrising: chop til you drop (the wii version of the first one)

she was surrounded by a group of zombies when I initially found her and I went over to save her. after I got her down from the half soccer ball she started downing zombies with a single kick to the ankles but followed me when necessary. I was confused. Hell I still am.

the custom bots in Red-Faction 2 could be amazing team mates, seriously, why don't more games do stuff like that, one bot of my friend and me got so bloody good that we needed a team of three to beat it!

fallout 3's fawks comes to mind... he's immune to radiation, which SPOILERS comes in handy for your ending, can carry like twice the stuff you can, and oh right, did I mention he's damn near invincible?

I was truly surprised when my cop friends from L.A. Noire actually killed some gangsters instead of leaving it up to me. Now that's what I call competent.

And, to its merit, I guess Final Fantasy 13 had some decent AI party members but that's still not a point in its favor because a good Final Fantasy would have left all the party control up to me.

The guys (and gals) from Half-Life 2 are pretty damn good I'd say. Using cover, attacking in groups, pretty good aim.

I've always felt the companions in Dragon Age 2 were fairly good, especially after you spent awhile programming their tactics.

I always thought they were just made up of random peasants who had no combat experience and, after seeing caim decimating whole armies on his own, just fled behind the nearest tree's to act as cheerleaders so they wouldn't have to risk getting hurt.

That said, yeah, Drakengard 2's A.I was painful, but not as painful as Nowe!
