Most Depressing Book Ending.

The one that downered me the most was "Matter", by Iain M Banks.
Everyone except one character dies. The Villain dies, the Protagonists die. Most everyone who is a character in that book dies. Why's it a big deal? Because they all grow. I cared about Anaplian's life, about Oramen's life, and Ferbin's. They all developed, and then got wiped out in the act of being Big Godsdamn Heroes. (Except Oramen, who just dies) It wasn't just that they died, either, but that it was so brutal and matter of fact. All that's left of one character is her head and spine, and even that goes up in an antimatter explosion.

Kenspeckle Grouse is dead, Solomon Wreath (who happens to be my favourite character) is missing presumed dead and Tanith is permeanantly possessed by the Remnant and so Valkyrie has lost her best friend who was essentially like a sister to her. Meanwhile, Tesseract goes after the Torment and Skulduggery tries to stop him, leading to the Torment dying anyway and Lord Vile returning, mortally wounding Tesseract and torturing Skulduggery before informing him that he will kill Valkyrie and all of the necromancers. After Lord Vile leaves, there is a very depressing scene where Tesseract shares his last moments questioning Skulduggery on his past with Lord Vile, insinuating that Skulduggery is only alive because of Lord Vile. Tesseract then dies.

'The Sorrows of Young Werther' is the only book that I've read that really depressed me. It is mostly due to the situation I'm in, so that book was so relatable, that the ending was almost painful to read.
