If you read almost any lyrics from My Chemical Romance they're all pretty depressing, but the way they sing/play the song brightens it up a bit, well mostly. Atleast one exception would have to be 'This Is How I Dissapear'

http://www.musicsonglyrics.com/L/loreenamckennittlyrics/loreenamckennittthehighwaymanlyrics.htm

The song "The Highwayman" by Loreena McKennitt. The lyrics tell the story of a highwayman (a bandit) during Revolutionary times who's in love with an inn-keeper's daughter. When he's gone, a bunch of British soldiers take over the inn and tie her up with a gun against her chest. She struggles against the rope and is able to get her finger on the trigger. The highwayman comes back up the road, and to warn him about the ambush, she pulls the trigger and kills herself. He loses it and goes galloping up the road to the inn and gets gunned down anyway.

"Wake Up Dead Man" by U2 (I know, U2!?) is also pretty depressing.
"Jesus, Jesus help me
I'm alone in this world
and a fucked up world it is too"

And who can't love that great, soothing lullaby "No Surprises" by the masters of depression, Radiohead?
"I'll take a quiet life
a handshake, some carbon monoxide
with no alarms and no suprises
no alarms and no suprises
silent"

"I Want You" by Elvis Costello is also good. One of the most intense 6-minutes of music you'll ever hear.

EDIT: I just read this description of "No Suprises", which is depressing in itself.

"This is a song about what happens when you become dead inside. Floating, drifting far above the world. Participating in the routines of the everyday world, an imitation of life. But there is nothing left behind your eyes, no pain or joy, no sorrow or hope. Just the endless void, the endless abyss, the lost ones in the blizzard walking the endless road. You pretend. You try to kid yourself that you can live your life. You try to lose yourself in a million pointless details, and while away your life until its end. Each day the same, melting into one another, passing by in a blur across eyes that cannot see, eyes that have seen too much.
And you're never really alive. Never really there."

Hmm. I think of the end to Stairway as actually pretty, err... not positive per se, but more charitable towards the "lady" than the rest of the song. Hopeful, almost.

I dunno...The song is about drugs and addiction, so probably not. It's kind of like, after all the fuss of the song, and all of that effort, he/she is still going back to drugs.
I don't think of it as just a drug song. I agree that, in the drug-song sense, it's a bit of a downer.

From Poe's "Walk the Walk" (which is actually a very upbeat song):
Mother spent ten years sitting by a window,
Scared if she spoke she would die of a heart attack.
She listened as her dreams silently screamed,
They drowned like little dolphins caught in a fishnet.

Never, Ever by HammerFall. Just heartbreaking. Can't pick out a single most depressing line, so here's the whole thing: http://www.lyricsdepot.com/hammerfall/never-ever.html

I told the priest don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming
He had the balls to come, the gall to die and then forgive us
No I don't wonder why, I wonder what he thought it would get us

Hey hey, good try
Tomorrow Wendy's going to die

- "Tomorrow Wendy", by Concrete Blonde.
Blast, you beat me to it!
Alright then... if I can't get Concrete Blonde I'll go a different route - Oingo Boingo!

The line "There's a lonely place that's always cold" from there song Just Another Day is for my money the single most evocative and disheartening line sung in a song ever. Oddly enough, I find their song about the inevitable nature of death, No One Lives Forever, to be cheerful and uplifting.

All Apologies by Nirvana. It's the last song of their last studio album, and Colbain died not long after the album was released. It's a moody tune.

I definitely have to agree on that one. I remember when I felt that way myself, either way I've moved on and I just love to listen to the song while throwing together montages of action oriented games.

Damn you, ThaBenMan. That one crushes me.

Another second for Mad World. Also, Cash's voice always kills me. He can bring out deep anguish in a song like nobody else, even if it's not his song.

I have to venture Hallelujah. Crap, it made me cry during Shrek. Shouldn't have paid attention to the lyrics.

Let's see... bah, I'm such a girl. Vesti La Giubba from Pagliacci. Music of the Night, especially sung by Michael Crawford. That one's made me teary since I was five.

Ah, of course. Here's a good contribution. Learn to be Lonely. Go ahead, look it up. Phantom of the Opera. I hadn't heard it until I was looking up something else and stumbled on it in the related links.

Child of the wilderness
Born into emptiness
Learn to be lonely
Learn to find your way in darkness

Who will be there for you
Comfort and care for you
Learn to be lonely
Learn to be your one companion

Never dreamed out in the world
There are arms to hold you
You?ve always known your heart was on its own

So laugh in your loneliness
Child of the wilderness
Learn to Be lonely
Learn how to love life that is lived alone

Learn to be lonely
Life can be lived
Life can be loved alone

...now pardon me, I can hardly read the lyrics without sobbing.

"Something in the Way" by Nirvana. It' about how he felt when his mother kicked him out of the house multiple times and was living under a bridge.

'Hurt'

"What have i become
My sweetest friend
Everyone i know
Goes away, in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt"

Ultrajoe, I can honestly say that the strongest emotion I took from this thread is a huge dollop of schadenfreude. Suck it down Mr I Don't Listen To Sad Music.

"Street Spirit" by Radiohead
Lyric in mind: "Cracked eggs/dead birds scream as they fight for life"
