'Mad World' is a shoe-in, and everyone's saying it.

A less obvious song is System of a Down's 'Chop Suey'. The song is depressing, and one of the lines go "... when angels deserve to die...". Still an awesome song though.

my god i need to avoid this thread...

its making me upset you sons of bitches!!!

HERE IS SAD FOR YOU.

seriously, go from 25.. down... *sniff*.. to one...

BAAAWWWW BAAAAAAAWWWWWW BBBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWW
oh dear god i went and listened to them all

#15 or thereabouts "my mom"

oh dear god, i laughed at the titanic and this got me to tear up.
Ultrajoe, I can honestly say that the strongest emotion I took from this thread is a huge dollop of schadenfreude. Suck it down Mr I Don't Listen To Sad Music.
this is exactly why i don't listen, i searched 'sad music' and got this.

I listened to some to find an example... and now i'm sad... sad is un-fun, i'm regretting doing it...

But that does not make #15 any less sad, and me any less depressed from this thread.

"I cry when angels deserve to die (die)" SOAD "Chop Suey"
"But all I could do, is close my eyes, and cross my arms, and hope to die, because you don't fucking listen, when I'm around." MCS "When I'm Around"

To get the last line you'd have to read the paragraph so
"You're the echoes of my everything,
You're the emptiness the whole world sings at night.
You're the laziness of afternoon,
You're the reason why I burst and why I bloom.
How will I break the news to you? [x2]" MCS "Hold me down"
Ultrajoe said:
'Hurt'

"What have i become
My sweetest friend
Everyone i know
Goes away, in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt"
ultrajoe thank you, that song totally slipped my mind, I love it though.

-I, hurt myself today.
To see if I still feel.
I...Focus on the pain.
The only thing thats real.

Thought of more. This Manic Street Preachers song about anorexia always gets me:

I choose my choice, I starve to a frenzy.
Hunger soon passes, and sickness soon tires.
Legs bent, stockinged. I am twiggy
and I don't mind the horror that surrounds me.

Self worth scatters, self-esteems a bore.
I've long since moved to a higher plateau.
This discipline is so rare, so please applaud.
Just look at the fat scum who pamper me so.

4st7, an epilogue of youth.
Such beautiful dignity in self-abuse.
I've finally come to understand life,
through staring blankly at my navel.

The last line especially is just... *sniff*

At home
Drawing pictures
Of mountain tops
With him on top
Lemon yellow sun
Arms raised in a V
Dead lay in pools of maroon below

Daddy didn't give attention
To the fact that mommy didn't care
King Jeremy the wicked
Ruled his world

Jeremy - Pearl Jam (Kid blows his brains out at Show and Tell)

The Silicon Chip inside her head gets switched to overload
And nobody's going go to school today, she gonna make them stay at home.

Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays (Girl turns a gun on her classmates)

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Time-Pink Floyd

Yes, love that song, and it is quite saddening. I second that one.

One that would never have popped into my head, as I was thinking more about lyrics. But yes, a definite, muchos agreement.

On a tangent from that, does anyone know the name of the composer or the music that was used in the trailer for Sunshine? I've heard it in other trailers too, but can't think what at the minute!!

Matchbox twenty have a whole lot of depressing songs - for instance "Kody" from their first album which deals with the death of a friend, and "Back to Good", which is basically a complaint against adult relationships going sour.

Then there's Long Day in which the lyrics suggest a person is on the brink of offing himself, and then there's "Leave" in which a relationship again, goes to hell and everyone is unhappy. Then there's the recent "How Far We've Come" in which he complains that the whole world's going to hell.

But the saddest lyrics that I've personally heard are "Rest Stop" from Matchbox 20.

Just three miles from the rest stop
And she slams on the breaks
She said I tried to be but Im not
And could you please collect your things
I dont wanna be cold
I dont wanna be cruel
But I gotta find more
Than whats happening with you
If youd - open up the door

She said - while you were sleeping
I was listening to the radio
And wondering what youre dreaming when
It came to mind that I didnt care
So I thought - hell if its over
I had better end it quick
Or I could lose my nerve
Are you listening - can you hear me
Have you forgotten

Just three miles from the rest stop
And my mouths too dry to rage
The light was shining from the radio
I could barely see her face
But she knew all the words that I never had said
She knew the crumpled-up promise of this
Broken down man - and as I opened up the door

She said - while you were sleeping
I was listening to the radio
And wondering what youre dreaming when
It came to mind that I didnt care
So I thought - hell if its over
I had better end it quick
Or I could lose my nerve
Are you listening - can you hear me
Have you forgotten

She said - while you were sleeping
I was listening to the radio
And wondering what youre dreaming when
It came to mind that I didnt care
So I thought - hell if its over
I had better end it quick
Or I could lose my nerve
Are you listening - can you hear me

While you were sleeping
I was listening to the radio
And wondering what youre dreaming when
It came to mind that I didnt care
So I thought - hell if its over
I had better end it quick
Or I could lose all my nerve
Are you listening - can you hear me

- Cheerful, huh? Ah the broken husk of human relations never ceases to bring a smile to my face.

Of course, there's probably a whole lot of foreign language songs which are worse. Apparently there's a song called "Gloomy Sunday", which has been covered numerous times and was translated into English.

Did someone say broken hearts and misery?

Big smiles for me!

Yeah, it was on QI (UK Quiz show with nearly impossible questions. They get 4 comedians as the contestants, and they get points for being Quite Interesting). I recall that 'Gloomy Sunday' is, officially, the most depressing song, EVER.

Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss

She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night

1st Chorus
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

(Sing lullaby)

The rumors flew but nobody know how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night

2nd Chorus
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby

I always found "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica pretty depressing, even though I'm not 100% on what it's about.

For a good ol' depression fest, try "The Unquiet Grave" by Kate Rusby.

It's about how in the past women were still considered betrothed to their husbands even after they had died. That and mourning, and missing a deceased loved one in general.

How pleasant is the wind tonight
I feel some drops of rain
I never had but one true love
In greenwood he lies slain
I'll do so much for my true love
As any young girl may
I'll sit and mourn all on your grave
For twelve months and a day

The twelve months and a day being up
The ghost began to speak
Why sit you here and mourn for me
And you will not let me sleep
What do you want of me sweetheart
Oh what is it you crave
Just one kiss of your lily white lips
And that is all I crave

Oh don't you see the fire sweetheart
The fire that burns so blue
Where my poor soul tormented is
All for the love of you
And if you weren't my own sweetheart
As I know you well to be
I'd rend you up in pieces small
As leaves upon a tree

Mourn not for me my dearest dear
Mourn not for me I crave
I must leave you and all the world
And turn into my grave

It's a bit of a killer lol

One of my favourites is Nothing Ever Happens by Del Amitri, which is one of the most poetic songs I've ever heard in my life:

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show

And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen time please, you know we cant serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when theres nothing to go
And by five oclock everythings dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while theres nobody there
The martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from Manchester writes to complain about
All the repeats on t.v.
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six oclock
And we'll all go along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow.

In addition, I'd like to add 'Intervention' by Arcade Fire, a song about religious despotism:

"Working for the church while your life falls apart, Singing Hallelujah with a fear in your heart, Every spark Of friendship and love will die without a home, Hear the soldier groan "We'll go at it, alone."

Ah, what a rough thread. Credit to Blink-182's 'Adam's Song'. A song about one of your friends committing suicide to spite everyone is hard to listen to.

I never thought I'd die alone
I laughed the loudest who'd have known?
I trace the cord back to the wall
No wonder it was never plugged in at all
I took my time, I hurried up
The choice was mine I didn't think enough
I'm too depressed to go on
You'll be sorry when I'm gone

I've always found it very sad, too, but it's not really. It's about James Hetfield's long-distance relationship with his girlfriend while on tour. In fact, he wrote the first part while on the phone with her- the first few notes are all open, so can be played one-handed- but then I like to think he said "bugger off, I'm writing a song".

Caution: This is all second-hand information from a friend. He may be wrong- I don't know.

It's happy in an vaguely anti-establishment kind of way. "Forever trusting who we are," "Life is ours, we live it our way," "Trust I seek and I find in you," &c.

It just sounds sad because it's slow and mellow.
