I used to be an emotional rock in my teens.
I'd never get choked up because of movies and such.
But once I hit 20-ish, I started getting sniffles when sad shit happens.
And now I openly weep to things like Saishuu Heiki Kanojo.
Although if you watch that and don't cry, you're a psychopath.

I wanted to throw myself off of a bridge after watching 500 Days of Summer.
Me too, although that was mainly due to the ending...actually, the film was genuinely sad in places though, and pretty moving. One of my favourites, I just wish they hadn't used that incredibly corny ending.

Well, Godzilla still makes me cry. Really, seeing Godzilla trapped in the Brooklyn Bridge cables and take a dozen Harpoon anti-ship missiles to the ribs is heartbreaking.

But Code 46 makes me hate life (everyone go see Code 46). However, I've got Philosophy of a Knife and The 120 Days of Sodom and I'm just waiting to get up the courage to watch them...

Closer.

It's an arthouse movie starring Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Clive Owen and Julia Roberts. Not to give too much away but it was seriously depressing. It's all about these two couples that get intertwined and mixed and ends up with adultery, betrayal, lies, deception, divorce, abuse and not wanting to give the ending away but let's just say that in the end one character who had a four year long relationship with a woman, discovers very late in the movie that he didn't actually know her at all.

I rented it because someone told me about this one awesome scene where Natalie Portman is doing a strip tease while wearing a pink wig. I guess they neglected to mention the little extra part about how the ending will make you want to kill yourself again and again and again.

bridge to terribithea.........this is supposed to be a kids movie how?
I'm glad someone said it before I.
While I have seen other movies that have moved me to tears, Bridge to Terabithia is just so soul-crushingly sad.
My bestfriend was hanging out with me when I was baby-sitting a house, and was "I'm gonna watch Bridge to Terabithia" and I told him 'don't. Its so fucking sad', and he said "we'll see"
Near the end of the movie, he paused it, came into the room I was playing games in, and said "I don't want to watch anymore..." in the most sad voice I have ever heard.

I'm not going to tell you what happens, just don't watch it. Its too sad.

My first reaction is almost immediately Neon Genesis Evangelion, but while that show did horrible things to my soul, it's a show, not a movie, and End of Evangelion, while at times absolutely brilliant, as a whole left me unimpressed. For that reason, my answer is:

Fail-Safe

It's probably best described as Dr. Strangelove, but played straight. However, this is a severe injustice to the film's effectiveness. Unfortunately, since it was overshadowed by the aforementioned Dr. Strangelove, it's not as well known now as perhaps it should be.

On the other hand, I still haven't gotten around to seeing Black Swan or Grave of the Fireflies, so my opinion might change in the near future.

Off the top of my head I would say it is a three way tie between The Orphanage, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and the Machinist.

+1 rep for knowing Fail Safe's existence.

The only one that come to mind for me is The Jacket, but it was at the same time quite uplifting.
Oh shit, I forgot about The Mist!!! The ending in that movie was an extreme downer but also quite fitting. Both these movies are good.

Kudos for Hannibal942 to also reminding me about The Machinist, also a depressing movie with one of the best endings since The Mist.

The remake of "On the Beach" released for TV in 2000
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0219224/

The film is the saddest I have ever watched. After the half mark (it's app 3h long) it starts to get really heavy culminating in scenes so sad, that they have made me cry every time. Makes me question my actions and cry for about 30 more minutes after the film.

Watch at your own risk!

I would have to say The Outsiders. Just how the deaths of two of the characters were handled in the movie made me tear up.

Though it probably doesn't help that the book was one of the only novel studies in school that I enjoyed, that in itself is enough to depress me.

I"ll agree with Toy Story 3 because it may not be the most depressing movie I've seen, but it's the only one that comes to mind. Plus, it was such a great end to a series.

Well, I don't know if depressing is exactly the right word for it, but The Prestige was a major mindfuck...
I never thought of that movie until you mentioned it. That rivalry wrecked everyone's life.

There are a few but the three that spring to mind are
Requeim for a dream
Song for a raggy boy

and probably the worst is
Boys don't cry

How to do you bold and change the size/colour of font here?
