Sadly, some people have the misfortune to live in a town with a terrible, terrible name. Luckily, now there is a thread to restore some kind of obscure happiness into their lives!

Now that you've seen past my deceptively epic opening, what are the most depressing place names you've every heard. I will go with Failsworth, Manchester. Any place with the word 'Fail' in is is begging for trouble, especially when there is a school named 'Failsworth School. Trust me, one of my parents went there...

In the example, I only noticed the Manchester part. I can't think of anything depressing, although I found a place named Bell End in a roadmap once.

Pssh screw giving happiness, I'll go the opposite and show them the name of a town that they will never live up to no matter where they live.

Fucking, Austria [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fucking,_Austria].

I can almost see why people keep stealing that traffic sign.

Well, I live in Asse in Belgium. Just pronounce the final "e" as a silent one and you'll understand.

"In 2004, mainly due to the stolen signs, a vote was held on changing the village's name, but the residents voted against doing so. According to the town mayor, Siegfried Hauppl:

We had a vote last year on whether to rename the town, but decided to keep it as it is. After all, Fucking has existed for 800 years, probably when a Mr Fuck or the Fuck family moved into the area. The 'ing' was added as a word for settlement."

AWESOME

Should I be embarrassed that I laughed when I read that?

Well in England there's a place called 'Diss'. As far as I'm aware nothing happens there. And the name... it's so dull it makes me want to hurt myself.

Near it though I found a place called Dickleburgh which cheered me up. Partly because anywhere with a name that in some way references male genitalia is funny, but also because it sounds like such a happy place.

I do believe they tried to sue DC for stealing the name.

Mar, Ontario, Canada. The 'town' is little more than a signpost, but it's a synonym for something bad.
