Without a doubt,

*click*

Whether you've just triggered a trap or landmine, or you're out of ammo... nobody likes the click.

Any variation in the usual jet-engine hum of my Xbox 360. I'm always scared it's eating the disc or cooking itself.

I agree with the regenerators in RE4. Those things were goddamn terrifying.

Also in the same game, there was the way that you'd be walking along in an apparently zombie-free area when the soundtrack suddenly plays this massive DDDDUUUUUUUUNNNNNNN chord and immediately, you're on edge because you're sure that an oven is about to burst open and a flaming zombie is about to jump out and try to chew your face off.

There's exactly one sound more dreadful than all the rest. Listen and be horrified:

Yes. It's the Water Warning from Sonic the Hedgehog. You hear that, kiddies? That's the sound of asphyxiation. That's the sound of your panicked screams going unheard through the murky depths. That's the sound of your heart pounding harder and harder against your chest while you try desperately to catch a breath but only suck fluid into your lungs, bringing on a slow, petrifying, agonizing death. But don't worry! They all float down here, Sonic...

And when you're down here with me, YOU'LL FLOAT TOO!

I'm surprised no one has called the roar of another car's engine as you come close to the finish line. Also, whenever Cortana or Gravemind start talking in Halo 3. Not dread out of a sense of fear, but dread as in having to go into that annoying slow motion, zoomed out perspective.

Either those rooftop zombies in HL2, or the poisonous headcrabs. They remind me of spiders so much, they freak me the fuck out.
Oh my god. Those screeches give me the creeps. The sound of the witch crying in l4d used to give me the heebie-jeebies, but now it's more annoying.

The sound of a grenade dropping right next to you while playing veteran in CoD is also one of most infuriating sounds any gamer will hear.

If you lose a game of "Inspector Parker" you hear a thunderclap before VERY SUDDENLY go to the game over screen, where VERY LOUD organ music trumpets your failure, scaring the crap out of you. So every time I select a piece that I'm not 100% sure of, I cringe, because I don't want to hear that thunderclap.

"I am fully charged!". Being on the recieving end of an Ubered heavy is never fun.

*Spy De-Cloaking/Dead Ringer sound*. It enduces so much paranoia amongst my team...

*Long Sniff* "HA-HAA!" (Konstantin Brayko) - It only the cutscene of said snorting once, every other time, you have to listen or get stabbed.

Every time I play Search and Destroy on Call of Duty I hate hearing the voice "You're the only one left finish the mission!" Then I just go son of a *****! I do not do well under pressure when everyone on my team is watching me. o.o
