I have few of guys in mind, but first place goes to Link, quiet hero rescuing princess from danger, he got my sympathy from first seconds of any Zelda game I played over the years.
/Thread.

I have to agree, Link is the best. And excluding that god awful TV series, I have yet to hear him speak.

I really connected with the Rookie in ODST. That has to be the most emotional game in the series. Bungie did a good job in making sure you really felt like you were dropped in a 60,000 by 60,000 feet sandbox alone, left with only clues that helps you escape, but you must worry about the wandering posionous scorpions.

Okay, bad example. But seriously, I could just imagine myself being the Rookie, alone, and having to wander about the fate of his squadmates as he finds clues.

But I don't know why you guys are saying Gordon Freeman. I really couldn't connect with him, at all.

(But yes, Gordon is still hardcore)

Link from the Legends of Zeldas. Think about it, we make him instantly grow into an adult in Ocarina of Times from a little kid (who knows what thats like?), we make him fight monsters 10-20 times bigger than him in all Zelda games, and he is in constant risk of being attacked by chickens - like right here

VG Cats are funny!

Question: Why is Gordon Freeman so liked? I just don't really get it, he's yet another silent protagonist. Granted, he does have a kickass beard, but still.

On topic, I guess I'd say Link, I've always been something of a Zelda fan and he seems likeable enough for someone who never speaks.

I like Gordon, but I don't think that he was the most empathetic mute ever. Link was even brickier, but at least he was in TPP, so we could pretend he has emotions. I would go with Revan/Exile, but they were forced to be as Her Holiness/cooldudess/lecher *****(I played both as female chars) as we wanted them to be. That's a tricky topic.

None.

It's impossible to empathize with a character that has no ability to emote.
I think I'll go with this one.

Everyone will say Gordon, so to avoid being incinerated, Gordon. And no, i'm not being a sheep here. I mean, the only other major one I have played as is Halo 3:ODST's Rookie. See?

I'm going to go with the Rookie from ODST, don't ask me why (for I have no idea why) but I liked him.
Going with this one as well. As silents protagonists go, he is really one to feel sorry for, and you constantly think to yourself, "boy, must he feel crap right now". I thought the game was a waste of money, but the Rookie is at leat an interesting character.
I never got that feel for Freeman.

Gordon... used to always pretend Link was "special" by making quest givers repeat quest messages to him at least 5 times.

I don't get the appeal of Gordon Freeman, I know Valve fanboyism is rampant but is it all just a giant plan to dump pigs blood on Gabe Newell at GDC?
Samus is the obvious right answer (For now).
