Metal fans.
They are everywhere on the Internet, like roaches in a Wendy's. All of them take Metal very, very seriously and very, very personally. They ***** and fight over the stupidest possible facets of their object of affection, like which of the thousand meaningless, identical sub-sub-genres of Metal a particular band, album, or even song fall into, and they do so under the impression that it matters even the tiniest little bit or has some bearing on the quality of the music. They often obsess over tiny details that only exist in their minds and argue for pages on end with other Metalheads about: whether one single lyric is a betrayal of a band's entire body of work, all their fans, and Metal as a whole; whether or not a band, album, or song is as 'brutal' as another, and what in Christ this actually means (spoiler: not a God damned thing); and, most commonly, and best of all, who among the shambling horde may bear the exalted title of 'true' fan, and is therefore subject to all the privileges that entails, such as wearing the same shirt for an entire week, talking at wearisome (meaning 'any') length about why their favorite band sucks so totally much now, or failing to get laid by telling a big girl with a spiked bracelet how they once met an apparent strung-out hobo urinating behind a Denny's who turned out to be this one band's lead singer.
What's greatest about the Metal fandom, though, is that they manage to be both so vehemently factious and yet so insular. I've never understood if Metal fans chose to wall themselves off into their own musical ghetto, or if all non-fans wisely chose to disassociate themselves from the braying herd, but there is very little interplay between fans and non-fans. If die-hard Metal fans have any affection at all for any other types of music they rarely or never seem inclined to mention it- it's possible that hearing anything insufficiently 'brutal' is physically deleterious- and non-fans are rarely impelled to express any love for the genre, classic work that could never pass for Metal today notwithstanding. I get the impression that Metal fans are, at least, not bothered by this, and I can speak for the rest of us when I say we're rather fond of the arrangement. So thank Heaven for that, at least.
Why, on this very forum the afflicted find it necessary every few days to troll themselves by asking, with an almost charming incredulity, why no one likes Metal (or, even more adorably, why no one likes a particular kind of Metal), why Metal should be used more in media, or what your favorite genre of Metal is- which is frankly a good question, since I honestly wouldn't be able to answer that even at gunpoint. I imagine nothing good comes from any of these topics, the only possible respondents being: those with no opinions, who by definition can add nothing to the topic; non-fans, who will not be able to express an opinion without causing serious personal offense; and other Metal fans, who will inevitably prove incapable of maintaining any pretense of civility, and will either foment disagreement just for the sight of it, or quickly reach it with the natural ease innate to the fandom.
Now tell me that's just my opinion like it means something.
