What's the most appalling and downright disturbing scene you've ever seen in a game?

I was just watching my roommate play Homefront, and this has been the only time my jaw has dropped from something I've seen in a game. I've seen executions before in games and thought nothing of it, but when I saw Korean troops execute two civilians in front of their crying child, I was absolutely horrifed!

I understand that shock value is very important in a game with a good story, but I believe there are things that should not go into a game. Watching a virtual invasion of the United States is enough. I don't think Homefront needed to break the envelope for a dark introduction.

So, has the Escapist seen worse?

Well, theres a scene in Heavy Rain
where you have a dank, dirty old room occupied by a table, a monitor and a webcam in the centre, with rusty, sharp tools scattered around. You have a short amount of time to hack off a finger so you can try to save your son.

Needless to say, a part of me wanted to cover my eyes with my hand, but that would have made the increasingly complex button holds much more difficult.

Fuuuuuu. I saw that seen. Brought me so close to tears. It was fucking horrible.

However the scene that made me squirm and squeal; the most ever! is this!

YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT I'M GONNA SAY! Cutting off your finger!

Godfather.. 2?

Baseball bat execution. Express route canal surgery?

Black Ops, hacking a Viet Cong throat open while they struggle, scared and confused underwater.

I hated that bit. Who wants to call me a hypocrite first?

One sentence:

"WHERE'S MY BOY!?" - The Boss, Saints Row 2

To be honest, the whole mission was quite disturbing.

I found that scene quite funny actually... I think it's because they pushed the broootality so hard it was like the Koreans were panto villains, i.e. stupidly evil for no reason. I was just waiting for the baby eating scene *sigh* it never happened though...

OT: Umm i don't wanna mention Heavy Rain again sooooooo ummmm... Ah there was a screwdriver to the jaw scene in The Darkness and there was the bit where
your girlfriend gets shot while The Darkness holds you back from saving her

Twas a pretty "dark" game all round... Anyone? No? Ok...

Red Dead Redemption

The ending, Marston walks out of his barn to face about 20 or so army troopers and FBI agents, kills and handful and then gets riddled with bullets. Just the gurgling sound and ragged heavy breaths he made before he died sent shivers up my spine

awwww dude, I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT! It upset me more than most serious games can, simply because I could never have expected Saints Row 2 to do anything to hit me on that level. How wrong I was.

Oh geez, I'd forgotten all about this bit.

It's the first and only time a game has given me a creeping cold feeling inside, I was genuinely sad and so, so angry I couldn't do anything about it. Amazing use of immersion, almost too good as I felt I couldn't ever get enough vengeance for it!

This is pretty pale in comparison.

In Dragon age 2:
At an end of a quest you find your mother's decapitated head on an animated corpse. Quite disturbing as you spend the whole quest going "crap, crap, crap, crap" because earlier, 3 years ago you got the chance to "kill" someone who *might* be the murderer who did this to your mum. So you're wondering, if you should have killed that person. I thought it was well done. I'm sure many Dragon Age 2 trolls will execute me for finding this mission quite emotionally moving.

Another is Anders triggering a civil war between Mages and Templars in the end by blowing up the Chantry building with people still inside. It's still a little, W.T.F

What the hell i thought Saints Row 2 was not serious at all, from all the stories I heard. If the game has more moments like that, I'll pick that and the first up, before I get the third one.

OT: Well you want disturbing, I gotta say anyone of these will be just fine.
NOTE: if you haven't played Dead Space 2 yet or want to, there are some minor spoilers in the death scenes video, just a heads up.

Doesn't qualify for me.
Unless you lived under a rock there are far worse things to see on history documentaries, to read of in papers and hear on radio or watch on the news.
Homefront was about as shocking as a that fluff you get in the bottom of your pockets.
It's the kind of 'shock factor' that people go for when they don't know what shock really is.
C-grade movie level.

I spent the entire 14+ minutes of that video giggling at how stupidly gory and over the top all those deaths were. None of them were particularly scary either. I found realizing what the "Abstract Daddy" enemy in Silent Hill 2 was far more disconcerting.

About 40-50% of the path has been the most disturbing thing I've seen in games. Just hearing the music now really shits me up. However, if you want a good, pretty surreal mindfuck-by-suggestion I would absolutely play it.

Edited for clip:
