I know a lot of people that make massive generalizations about games which really annoy me.

I can try to recommend a game to friend and i'll get something like "wah i don't like rpg's, i played hello kitty rpg once it was terrible" or "graphics are all that matters"
They judge far too many games based on preconceptions, but then they go ahead and lecture me about my bad taste in games.

I also hate "PS3 has no gaems"; it's only ever said to try and stir things up pointlessly.
It doesn't bother me so much anymore but there's still a lot of people that claim that it has no games just because they don't know what they are.

I was playing the Tales of Monkey Island series, and the guy next to me says: "Are you even playing the game? All you do is talk and talk, when's the shooting gonna start?". Some people simply don't get adventure games.
My parents also don't like me playing games, saying "games are for kids, they dumb you down, waste of time", so I simply play them away from them in my room (saves a lot of nerves on both sides), no need to rub it in their faces... As long as i get the results, no one complains.

Ars Technica has a nice article up on how DeLL cut their XPS line because the market just weren't profitable. (That is, XPS desktops are meant as high-end gaming workstations).
I'm not going to argue against enthusiasts building their own system, but look at the graph in the article detailing the decline of the PC market followed by the huge rise of the consoles.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2008/05/dell-xps-phase-out-symptomatic-of-declining-pc-gaming-sector.ars
I found this particularly hillarious because the real reason Dell phased out their XPS line was because 18 months before they cut the XPS gaming line they bought Alienware. They stopped making XPS gaming rigs so they weren't competing with themselves and could charge you a higher premium on the bigger brand name. Also the article you linked says so in the opening line before giving a completely different explanation. :)

Sadly I was laid off at the time because I was working technical support on the XPS gaming rigs.

A player having a near full ping bar in MW2, whilst everyone else is lagging, and still not accepting the fact that he is the host. That guy was really hardheaded.

I was trying to prove to someone at my college that mw2 is one of the most unoriginal (but still quite good games) ive ever played and he came back with 'Well call of duty was the first game to have a class system!' there was a pause and then *FACEPALM*

I'm lucky I have a Mom that let me play Everquest with her... plays WoW now, but she got bored with it since she capped out a couple characters, and raiding ain't her thing... I'll usually walk in on her playing Evony or something like that. That and she dated a nerd that got me into D&D...

Had a co-worker say, after I mentioned that I like D&D "That game's satanic." I replied with the usual reply of, "No it's not, it's a simple fantasy game and the entire argument of Satanism is a flat-out lie told by ignorant people who never actually played."

Someone asked me "how can you stay interested in a game for SUCH a long time? (40 hours) That's such a HUUUGE commitment. It sounds boring."

She said this, almost right after telling me that she had read the Twilight book series something like five times...

Reading the same four books five times isn't a huge commitment at all... But playing Dragon Age? Well I might as well marry the damn thing if I'm going to spend THAT much time with it...
The hypocrisy that is some women vs videogames never fails to astound me.

Also, welcome to The Escapist! Don't feed the trolls, they're getting fat lately.
Fixed that for you.

Anything on console wars. Ever.

And elitism.

It's like, fuck, gamers are already under fire in the media; you gotta fight amongst yourselves too?

Fanatical console wars. When it just devolves into a giant prick waving contest.

One girl said that games diminish one's linguistic competence. I could only reply with "well, you're a ****."

Maybe she was right.

Joking aside, what she said was total bullshit, as I gained lots of English vocabulary and grammar through games like Starcraft, the Baldur's Gate series, and the Age of Empires series. All of these had me reading, listening, and enjoying the English language, which is why I easily became fluent in it as my third language.

Eh, before games it was rock and roll, before that it was blah blah blah. Didn't people 90 years ago go BATSHIT crazy when they made alcohol illegal? NO people where soo much better back in their racist ass slavery days.

Jokes aside, pretty soon someone will commit murder to write a book about it, then books will suddenly be the cause of all this. I mean people always tell me books are better for imagination, why is imagination always rainbows and unicorns?

Well I was talking to a lady one time about career stuff and she was asking me what I am into I said that my passion was Gaming, then she said right away "Yeah, Go shoot yourself in the head"
I mean she didn't say anything directly about video games but she was totally not accepting them at all. She would not even accept my opinion on the topic. I get very tired of a lot of things blaming games for crimes, without even realizing the other factors that come into play.
If she did say that she really needs to open her mind and stop being so hateful.

This isn't about video games, but it still falls clearly under the "gaming" header. The other day I was in Barnes & Noble with a friend, browsing the D&D stuff. A little girl- probably about 5 or 6 years old- walked up and grabbed a copy of the Monster Manual off the shelf, clearly attracted to the bright and colorful demon lord on the cover. A middle-aged man- her father, I presumed- looked over, and yelled "Oh, no, honey. Don't be one of those people!" I looked over and yelled an offended "Heyyyy!" Unfortunately, they moved on before I could launch into a rambling and sarcastic tirade about the superiority of "normal" little girl occupations such as Barbie dolls and age-inappropriate overly-sexualized pop music.

But do not under any circumstances fool yourself into thinking the PC market alone is profitable for the big and costly titles.
Does anyone remember that article about the PC gaming market being worth (or profits, I don't remember) over 100 million dollars EXCLUDING digital distribution?

Vague memories rumbling around someplace.

I did also laugh heartily at the rest of your post, but this is all terribly off topic so shhh...

Not to me, but I picked up somewhere the statement "TF2 is a halo clone". Apparently the person in question thought halo invented fps.
