I got one situation where I decided to joke around.

Old woman: Video games are bad for kids. They make them violent.
Me: I play video games.
Old woman: I bet that you were pretty violent in your childhood.
Me: Not really. I was too busy beating pixels instead of live human beings.

I got something similar with a conservative/christian/extremist. He said that games are violent and kids should avoid them. I founded it weird when he said they should join the army at 18.

Fictionnal war=bad
Real war=good

What?....

Fortunately, my mom's extraordinarily chill about my gaming so I don't get anything from her, I've even gotten her to sit down and play a few things, and she flat out told me I need to get Dante's Inferno.

I do have one friend who holds the "All Anime style games are the same." opinon, which I really despise. I don't know if it's a side effect of being a computer gamer or what. (I'm not calling all computer gamers jerks, some of my best friends are computer gamers, but all computer gamers I know really have been).

I do have the beautifully hypocritical story of a mom who was talking to me about how violent games were at gamestop once, and then bought her son CALL OF DUTY on the DS. I haven't played any of the DS CoDs, but I can assume they're less graphical than their console brothers but still... I should say the kid was like, 8, 9. I don't have a problem with kids playing violent games, but it was beautiful in the hypocrisy, like I said.

I don't appreciate the borderline-blanket statement, and I don't think all anime games are the same (excluding Naruto- well besides that one good one that came out) and I consider myself a hardcore pc gamer. I will admit though, sometimes I feel we come off as elitist assholes, but only when we compare prices. Just to point out:

My computer can play most games on maximum settings, but (to set the bar) it can't play GTA4 on higher than medium. My computer shouldnt be too much more than a year old, and it cost me $1400 excluding tax.

Anything that was said by the staff of Fox News during the Mass Effect "side boob" debate.
Or
Anything remotely close to statements made by several media sources after the Columbine incident about Doom "directly causing" the severly depressed and unstable teenagers to commit mass murder.
Or
Any statement that says games are the problem and ineffective/non-existent parenting has nothing to do with kids delving deep into games and out of a social group.
That is all.

for god sakes stop using "ignorant" as "Stupid". THAT'S NOT WHAT THAT WORD MEANS!!!
Ya, that would just be...

IGNORANT!

Sorry sorry. I am lucky that most people around me have an understanding of video games as a hobby and I don't get bashed really at all. Most of the stuff I read that is completely wrong and uninformed is from Fox news or random outspoken religious folks on the internet. That Frumpy Mom... I wish people would just live and let live.

Okay, when you say video games, you mean like Bust-a-move and Tetris right?
And Sims, don't forget Sims!

I know it was borderline blanket, but I can really only talk from experience. Most of the PC-only or mainly PC gamers on here that I've seen are really nice people, but the ones I physically know are jerks.
I do however, respect you guys on the price point. That and the fact I've never been comfortable playing a game without a controller in my hand is all that's really kept me from playing PC games.
I apologize that it came out a little offensive, it's past my bedtime and I'm a bit foggy.

"You play video games?"

"Yeah."

"Do you play World of Warcraft?"

"Sometimes, sure."

And then they give me a look like they're saying "Ha, loser."

So many different things, but this is one that comes to mind:

Me - "Why is Final Fantasy 7 so bad? Yeah, you have a sword that is as big as you, and your point is...?"

Other Guy - "It represents the downfall of gaming because it is a casual game"

Me - "What does that have to do with the sword? And FF7 isn't a 'casual' game"

Other Guy - "The only people that play FF7 are little emo 12 year old girls who are in love with Cloud"

-.-

While in the middle of Gears of War, my Mom the diplomat sits down for about ten minutes, nodding her head and watching the action. After another shotgun exploit (my weapon of choice), she waits for a pause in the game and says, "My, their delegation staff must not have been very well versed in peace-talking."
"Mum, it's a game about alien things."
"Xenophobia's no reason to be rash, dear. Perhaps a Summit would have been better use of time."

And then my friend (Lord bless her, she's never played a video game) while I was playing Psychonauts. "This game shouldn't be about telepathy! I want to know what happened to the squirrels!"

Me:Okay, what do you want to play?
Friend:HALO 3, Then some MW2, MW2 is the best game ever
... what? And pink and purple guns that shoot out little plasma bullets or something and homing needles are realistic?

"Stories don't belong in videogames"
=O No wronger statement has ever been made. If what I'm trying for ever comes to fruition no one with any sense will ever say that again. I'm working towards a Master's in Creative Writing so I can bring fantastic stories to video games. Because only with video games do I have the real freedom to have a story as long as a novel, but also have music and acting. The interactivity will be great with the boss fights I have planned.
Well I probably should point out the guys who said that were your typical Halo fanboy think only the Xbox is a legitimate console type people, but ya. I was just astounded that they said something that.... ignorant.

This one guy I play with occasionally
"Shut the fuck up man your fucking British!"
I was in the middle of a conversation with a couple of guys on the finer points of weapons laws in the U.S. me being American and them british. (londoners apparently)
then my "friend" bursts in with that little nugget of wisdom.

also I know another guy who says some ignorant shit, but he admits when he doesn't know sabout the topic and we call him on it.
hes allowed to do that cause he is actually likeable

Someone asked me "how can you stay interested in a game for SUCH a long time? (40 hours) That's such a HUUUGE commitment. It sounds boring."

She said this, almost right after telling me that she had read the Twilight book series something like five times...

Reading the same four books five times isn't a huge commitment at all... But playing Dragon Age? Well I might as well marry the damn thing if I'm going to spend THAT much time with it...

The hypocrisy that is women vs videogames never fails to astound me.

Also, welcome to The Escapist! Don't feed the trolls, they're getting fat lately.
