Fallout 3. I turned on the machine, play for a bit, turned it off & there were Terminators in the streets.

Why do so many people confuse immersiveness with addictiveness...?

Anyway, I have to say Myst. Completely from first person, characters that seem to talk to you personally...

I actually ended up dreaming I WAS in the game after I beat it.

I see lot of people mentioning the Thief series and the entire Half-life series ( Not just HL2) which is great. I've replayed them both many times and they always please. I've not seen anybody mention Diablo 1 or 2 and I simply can't believe no one on this forum has never been late to school or work or missed large chunks of sleep clicking away at zombies and skeletal archers.

Also, I must be one of the only people who thought Morrowind and Oblivion could go die in a fire somewhere. They held my attention for a little while but everytime I had to talk to an npc, the voice acting would make me want to murder. Fallout 3 was better but for me it was not one of the most immersive games I've ever played. The ghouls really set killed the experience for me. So I killed most of them. That's probably why I got the bad ending.

I'll go with some of the classics:
Bioshock, Shadow Of The Colossus, Half Life 2, Condemned and one a little less obvious:
The Path.

Easily Silent Hill 2. By far. The atmosphere was so solid, when I played it for the first time and I got to Brookhaven Hospital, I screamed, turned off my computer, hid under the covers and didn't touch the game again until I managed to summon up the courage two weeks later.

Deus Ex. You feel like a total badarse who could do anything whichever way they want.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Its a Vampire game where you ACTUALLY feel like a Vampire.
I would say Deus Ex is fun, but not necessarily immersive. The crappy graphics just stop me from getting really absorbed by the game.

I'll have to agree with you on VTM:B, though. One of the best RPGs I've ever played, even if the ending levels sucked like a turbo-charged hoover.

OT: I'd say S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl or the stealth mission in CoD4: Modern Warfare That might just be because Pripyat is a stunningly eerie place, though.

EDIT: Ninja'd for typos.
I love your Avatar, Go slopoke.
OT: Fallout 3 has taken a large chunk of my life

Thief 2, easily. Well... actually maybe the first Thief because I played that first. When I completed the first level I didn't keep going, I just reloaded it and played it again because I couldn't believe how awesome the game was. I still can't.

Morrowind, even though most the immersion happened in my head.

Thief2, because it is just so full of awesome.

System Shock 2 - oh the terror

QFT.

Bloodlines is very immersive and sometimes even very scary.
