There is no kind of Fanatic that is really pleasable by something that isnt the exact same thing as what they did like at first. Thats why everything new is just wrong to them. Fans are stupid.

If they're fans, they'll eat up whatever their party does.

If not, they're not fans.

Thoughts?
Agreed. This is also why I don't get the hate on "Sonic fans". News flash: They aren't fans if they hate everything SEGA has done with the character since 2000. What, am I a Square Enix fan because I hate everything they've ever developed ever? Don't think so, not with the true definition of fan.

Mass Effect fans. While Bioware has been getting really dickish in how they talk to people on their forums Mass Effect fans won't stop at anything to *****. "Why did they do that? Why is this like that. Where is my old squad. Cameos suck. Fuck cause I wouldn't have done that."

They are never happy.
Probably going to have to go with this, but only over the bitching of the base Mass Effect 2. All that nonsense about how ME2 wasn't an RPG because they streamlined things so you can spend more time playing and less time melting down the piles and piles and fucking piles of useless items you picked up so the game would stop yelling at you that you're running out of space to put more useless items. If you want to spend more time not playing the game, feel free to hit pause and just stare at the menu for 10 minutes at random intervals. I, on the other hand, appreciate the new emphasis on being able to PLAY THE DAMN GAME.

DLC on the other hand though... Sorry but Bioware just stinks on that, and they generally deserve that hate. Arrival was almost as bad as Pinnacle Station. People love the games because of all their elements put together, and releasing a pack that just says "here go shoot stuff for an hour with none of the other elements that made our game a best seller" is understandably going to get you some negative feedback. And Lair of the Shadow Broker is pretty much considered the best by just about everyone because it does have it all: it truly is more of Mass Effect instead of more of just a part of Mass Effect.

Nope, you're just confusing different people to be the same one.
No, that's the frightening part. I'm not. lol
While you may have seen a handful of people being inconsistent in their criticisms of FO3 and FO:NV, you conclude the fanbase in inconsistent.

Firstly, the most critical views on these two games do NOT come from fans, but from detractors. Some of them may have been fans of former BIS, who made FO1&2, but that doesn't make them fans of Bethesda.
Secondly, different people can like and dislike different things. Lumping everyone in the audience together doesn't make sense, as you have found out.

The World of Warcraft fanbase. Seriously, try reading there forums sometime, I swear at leats half of the first page is complaints about one thing or another.

So by that logic, it's wither a terrible game or the community (Or the forum community anyway) paradoxicaly pays £15 a month for a product they don't like.

OT: Worst fanbase that Ive encountered is the halo fanbase. You cant say a single negative thing without having em at your throat. Once asked a fair question regarding what made halo unique story wise (since I hadnt played it then), and the whole thing afterwards was just hate and calling me a MW fanboy (I dont even own a MW game, and see no relation between halos story and MWs story). After 2 pages of hate, one sane fan explained it to me.

Another is the WoW fanbase. Most are generally sane, but theres 20-30% thats never satisfied:

-Easy to get gear: "OMG free epix for noobs shit game!"
-Hard to get gear: "Goddamn grindfest of a game!"
-Class beats them in PvP: "Nerf rock! Paper is fine though"
-Fun moments in story: "Lore fail!"

The best WoW-whine is "vanilla was so much better than all the expansions!" (for those who dont know; vanilla is what WoW is called when referring to when max lvl was 60 and the game was a mess of unbalance and luck). Vanilla was ok, but mainly because we didnt know better :D All the quests were just "kill x enemies" or "get y items from enemies", nothing else. Whoever finds vanilla better than any of the expansions have a strange definition of "fun" and "balance"...

the sonic fanbase, they complain about everything that happens in the games,
This. They are the only fan base that I've ever seen create huge amounts of rage about the protagonist's eye colour.

Though I have to say that Sega created their own monster. They spoiled us with brilliant games in the beginning and use that to build our hopes up before knocking us down. Do that enough times and your entire fan base becomes bitter and cynical very quickly.

My general opinion of the vocal portion of the gamer community is this: "Waaaaaaaaahhhhhh, the game isn't how I would make it, so it sucks and no one else should like it"
this.

"And therefore we should organize ourselves and make our voice heard! We deserve better games! We deserve better! We DESERVE"

Any fanboy of any fan base. Ever.

A lot of fans are self entitled, whiney bitches, and are only ever satisfied if a sequal ends up being exactly like it's predecessor.
Skyward Sword - Waaa the graphics aren't realistic enough
But it's true!!! I hate the new graphics why couldn't they've kept the old one from twilight princess?
?*feels the staring* What? Im just sayin...oh crap.
I'm one of them, right?

I don't understand the problem people have with ffxiii. It's an amazing game. The combat system is incredibly well made and the characters are so deep and subtle that it fools almost everyone into believing they're superficial.
Hello people! That's the point! There's a reason why vanille, snow and hope are like they are. Try going through a major loss without wearing a mask.
But I still hate snow. I turn the console off every time he calleth himself a hero.

But man. Final fantasy fans. Just be happy :)

A lot of fans are self entitled, whiney bitches, and are only ever satisfied if a sequal ends up being exactly like it's predecessor. Just looks at the whole DA2 mess.

The game is more streamlined.

"Nuhuh! It's dumbed down for the console tards!"

Character archetypes are not as important, so it's not as necessary to always have a 2 mage 1 tank set up, the same level of tactics is still required at higher levels.

"Nuhuh! It's just easier!"

The dialogue wheel streamlines conversation, making a more fun engaging conversation system.

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAH! DRAGON EFFECT 2! WAAAAAAAAH!"

I could do this all day...
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE GAME, DON'T PLAY IT!

"Waah, I want my money back!"

RESEARCH FIRST THEN!

I'm not going to defend DA 2's faults, but I like the game enough that they don't bother me.

Also, any MMO fans are impossible to please.

People who don't actually compare the game they are dissapointed with with the game they value as being superior, rather they just insult the new game because they still focus on the 'Good ol memories' of the old one while they play said new game, thus not paying attention to any improvements.

I like ME2 for example, the story is just as good and in terms of improvements the loading screens are far better than the elevators. The planet probing, albeit as Yahtzee said being equivalent to "MWWWWAAAAEEEH" is still far better than those f**king vehicle sections.

The only issue really (sorry for spamming yahtzee quotes but he was pretty dead on with ME2) is that every fight can be predicted by the sudden appearence of 40 chest high walls. Others however complain about the new reloading system, why? The old one basically said 'Go ahead and shoot all that doth move, for you shall not lose thy ammo' whereas the new system said 'Be more accurate and tactical with your weapon choices or get ready for a 29 husk participant Royal Rumble match'.

I can't wait to see what bulls**t trolls come up with when they realise Rockstar weren't joking about LA Noire being F all like GTA.

Any fanbase, really. There will always be people whining, bitching and complaining about every single aspect of a sequel, hell even new IPs. I'm starting to sympathize with Yahtzee's idea to ban all sequels/prequels.

People seem to treat a fanbase as if it's some vast monolithic entity where everyone within it has a vast monolithic opinion, and thus, people should be surprised when a portion of it is unhappy. Given the vast amount of arguing that occurs within fandom, I'm astonished how anyone could come to such a conclusion in the first place.

A fanbase is a collection of highly opinionated individuals. Some of them like different things from others. Thus, it's perfectly reasonable for, say, a group of fans to complain about Oblivion being different from Morrowind when they fixed certain problems. The people complaining about one thing are not necessarily the same as people complaining about the opposite.

Pretty much. And by fan, include fans of any medium-- books and music are hardly immune, for example. There's this odd point at which someone turns from a fan "Wow, I really like this artist's/company's stuff" to "I own this series". Now, smart artist types encourage this sort of participatory feeling: for one, feedback is always a good thing. But if the artist dare defy expectations, the dysfunctional fan has this feeling of betrayal. Why didn't that artist do exactly what they wanted?

It rather misses a central tenent of creativity, which is to defy expectations. Sadly, the temptation to just give in and listen to the more strident members of the fanbase is strong (for fiscal reasons if nothing else), which is why we see series that haven't changed at all for ten releases straight, or 50 year old musicians playing the stuff they wrote when they were their kids' age.
