Today, an "Innovative Shooter" would seem like an oxymoron.

These days all they can do is bolt on more and more novelties (such as Crysis's awesome graphics) to a game in a bid to scrape the last dregs from the barrel. I do think that the latest few ps3 shooters (Killzone 2, Resistance 2) have bought a more full-on war-like feel to the genre, as opposed to the more covert-style of FPS's such as Halo. I'm guessing its due to the ps3's superior 8core processor that this far more complex AI is possible

Halo 1 was definitly revolutionary, it completely changed FPS`s forever
yeah, by reinforcing the point that all we want is colour filled unoriginal space marines heroes blasting retarded aliens. way to revolutionise
Way to jump on the Halo Hatewagon, you can say what you want about how it seemed unoriginal,
but truth be told it still paved the way for many games. Oh and it was a great game to boot.

Prey had alot of really cool gravity affects like having enemies on the ceilings and walls, being able to shift the gravity in the room, wall becomes the floor and the size stuff, go through a portal and become 1 inch tall.

Red Faction 1, Geo-mod is still one of the coolest things in a FPS i have ever played. The ability to change the map, dig tunnels and on one multiplayer map destroy a bridge that consists of about 1/4th of the map.

To bad these things didn't catch on

EDIT: also stalker I'm not sure if it was the first, but it was the first sandbox FPS i ever played and its one of the only games that i felt was actually scary, not that BS stuff pops out at you scary like in Fear, but actual fear, i wish more game companies understood suspense horror.

if portal counts as an fps (it is first person and you get a gun type thing) i say portal
I would agree with you. Portal was very original, loaded with funnys, and had one hell of a gun that *gasp* doesn't shoot pointy or hot or icy or any other basicly deadly object, unless it was used creatively. Big shocker!
Wasn't Portal essentially a remake of a conceptual game named "Narbacular Drop"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narbacular_Drop

I would go with Half-Life as the most innovative shooter for me. It kept the mechanics basic, but it introduced puzzle-solving as a plot device, rather than a gimmick and cemented the idea that a successful shooter needed a (reasonable) story and (fairly) interesting characterisation.

People say that and I don't know why. To me it was hard but not revolutionary in any way.
Me neither. It's a standard SHOOT EVERYONE ON YOUR WAY Fps. And yes, You always go the way where the enemies appear.
halo 1 pretty much started that
Really? I guess you haven't played many pre-halo FPS.

Halo is important if we consider what it did to consoles, but nothing that we saw on Halo was really innovative if we include PC FPS...

I would go with Half-Life 2 as the last innovative FPS for its extensive use of a physics engine.

Half-Life. It pretty much recreated the FPS genre and is one of the most respected first-person shooters ever.

Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, Quake, Deus ex & System shock are also insanely innovative.
amen to that

portal is probably the most inovative modern fps in the sense that its first person and you shoot. But a true first person shooter that is inovative i would probly have to say half-life.

Quake.
Although it might not be the "Greatest" It certainly was Innovative, and is still commemorated for it today.
(I.E. QuakeCon)

Prey ... Red Faction...
Wow... you beat me to the point. Those are two that often get overlooked. For me there is a list of several games that I would say are revolutionary.

Prey - for the aforementioned gravity inversion and spirit realm

Red Faction - the environments that were 90% destructable.

Halo - for all of its detriments, it has to be the most polished game in history

Ghost Recon - nothing like playing deathmatches where 1 hit usually kills you from a handgun

Doom - for starting it all

Duke Nukem 3D - for making the character you play cool

Goldeneye/Perfect Dark - for bringing the genre successfully to the consoles

Timesplitters - for its friendly level editor, frantic pace, and humour

Unreal Tournament - alternate fire that matters

Half-Life 2 - gravity gun, 'nuff said

System Shock 2/Bioshock - being able to have a quality game with a unique story

Breakdown - to my knowledge, the first successful venture to a first person game where there is more interaction than just 'see enemy, shoot enemy'

Mirror's Edge - for attempting something crazy and having a lot of fun with it

Portal - how can you not think it's cool?

Turok - A bow and arrow... in 1997... on a console... with real physics that caused the arrow to lose height during flight.... brilliant

Thief - First person stealth with a bow and arrow... awesome!

I think I have covered everything I thought added something to the genre. Toodles!
