STALKER.

Alright, difficulty wasn't new, but we'd lost it to the sands of time in a sea of regenerating health and pathetic enemies.

go on, play STALKER and tell me there isn't a sense of achievement from killing a group of guys in exoskeletons on master difficulty. And by achievement, I don't mean the pathetic 360 achievements- you beat the tutorial! is not achieving anything.

and taking out an entire faction on clear sky was damn fun, even if that part of the game had some massive glitches.

The most recent to my mind is probably Portal. The whole system of play is just completely different, hence "now you're thinking with portals". I'm sure I wasn't the only one that for a time after playing the game, started applying those thoughts to everyday life?

But innovative could mean any FPS that did something new along the timeline. Quake was true 3D for example. I have to say I disagree with Halo. It's an alright shooter for a console but just feels completely average. What's new?

In PC, I'd say DukeNukem 3D. Though it might've not been the most innovative, it had something that had been lacking on the FBS at that time: interactive enviroment. You could blow up trash cans, walls, urinals, bottles, lamps and buildings (or just one, I don't remember). This made the game world seem so much more alive.

Also, Alien vs. Predator is very high in my list when we're talking about innovation. I didn't even bothered to play with the marine more than a level or two. It was the Alien that caught my attention. The game was no longer "point the gun and shoot everything", but "sneak around and bite their head off one-by-one". *glee* I could deal with the harsh graphics and hard difficult. The atmosphere was so rewarding. The predaor was ok, I guess.

In consoles, my choice is perfect dark for Ninentdo 64. It did many things that the oh-so-hallowed Halo did, but much rearlier. Dual weapons, cretive weapons, aliens and great plot. Again, the keyword here is "innovative", not popular. I do consider Halo to be a popular, but not innovative. I understand why so many people like it (not really), but we are talking about innovation in here.

Metroid Prime 3 - The entirety of the Metroid Prime series brought something new to our "failured" Nintendo consoles, it merged FPS gameplay and puzzles very well, together with the "scanning" system that opened up a huge library of backstory if used correctly, all this was experienced, literally, from behind Samus' visor, contributing to immersion. However, Metroid Prime 3 enriched this further by proper use of the Wii's control system. The Wiimote is excellent for console FPSs and worked very well in Metroid Prime 3.

Timesplitters. Lots of laughs, huge variety of weapons (the injector was, until recently replaced by the MIRV from Fallout, my favorite videogame weapon ever), tons of maps and characters, a great mapmaker on a console that allowed you to make objective-based missions AND multiplayer maps, lots of fun single player content via challenges and a story mode that pokes fun at movies and games of all kinds, and the great fun of multiplayer with bots.

Give me a game made earlier that does all that.
+1 awesomeness.

I agree!

out of all mentioned I'd say tf2. theres really not alot out there that play like it.

I don't think portal is actually that innovative. don't get me wrong, I love it but its not that dissimilar to puzzle solving in previous game experiences.

personally I think www.pvkii.com is the winner. the directional parry system and weapon collision is very unique.

halo because it's to fps games what super smash bros is to fighting games. it has a more frantic and multiplayer-friendly build. also CoD4 because it's so realistic

In order, games that have made the biggest impact on the FPS genre (IMHO).

Wolfenstein 3D (the OG) > Doom (I and II) > GoldenEye 007 > Half-Life > Perfect Dark

Edit: That's in order of release date, not of importance; each made their individual contributions.

Probably Doom, as it was one of the first FPS games and it did a lot of things right.

Oh, and as a response to the whole Halo worshipping:
1) Don't you ever dare to say that the vehicles were good. They sucked beyond comprehension. The controls were plain bad and they were pretty damned useless most of the time. Why the hell would space marines be using 4x4 cars with absolutely no friction? The tires on these things are massive, yet it always seemed as if you were driving on ice.

2) Good AI? The AI was an abomination. Enemies acted retardedly and allied units were just as stupid. I remember that at one point there was a mission where the played would have many, many allied marines on his side, and they would all die thanks to their stupidity, id est by running straight into the enemy.

3) Weapon limit, oh my! This would indeed be something nice, were it not for the fact that you could find every damned weapon in nearly every room. I would often run out of ammo, and replacing a weapon would be no problem whatsoever, because there were piles of weapons all over the place. So much for your awesome weapon limit.

4) Grenades were quite nice, but not always useful. I often prefered to just barge into a room with a shotgun than to throw several grenades. The grenades were by no means better than the ones in Medal of Honor for the PS...

5) Weapon balance sucked. There were 3 weapons I used while playing the game, because the others were simply worse and therefore there was no point in using these other weapons.

6) I found the soundtrack very unfitting. At some points I thought it was Enya or whatever. Does Enya fit the mood when you're at war with aliens? I don't think so!

7) Here's some more innovation: The same rooms are re-used dozens of times. I lost count of how many times I had to run across a bridge that looked exactly the same as several bridges I had seen before. The same goes for many other rooms. This made the game look rather repetitive.

8) The health system ruined the game. You could screw up and hide for a second and everything would be okay. This made it far too easy to get past certain points.

Half-Life and Far Cry. HL for reasons people have already said. Far Cry because it gave you freedom and smart AI. Also, it combined action and stealth nicely.

Halo, but Timesplitters one was infinetly better and so was everything else about it. The third game, infact is, in my opinion the best game that has ever existed.

TimeShift was innovative, unfortunately the level design and AI were too clunky to make the game great. But it was a great idea.
