Overall what FPS do you think revolutionized the genre in terms of AI, action, difficulty, controls, enemies etc. etc.? Personally for me it was a tie between the original Quake and Perfect Dark both of them had a high level of difficulty (Quake so much it hidden the portal to the nightmare difficulty) the AI was brutal and merciless enemies were memoriable (Quake's final boss was a giant marshmellow that threw firballs at you. And Perfect Dark had the dateDyne institute) so what do you think??

Today, an "Innovative Shooter" would seem like an oxymoron.
Oh dude, I so concur to that.
OR
Innovative = A gun, the monsters are there - shoot them.

Doom and Wolfenstein. They were the first to get massive recognition and kick start interest in the genre.

Other than that, pretty much Goldeneye, it proved games of films didn't have to suck, and Perfect dark, a game I played 8 years after its release and marveled at how most modern FPS don't even come close to its most basic premise. Plus you could disarm and stun people. I've yet to see other FPS that do that.

I say the original Doom. It was a decent story with plenty of secrets and well for the time great graphics.

Take it for granted, but the gravity gun in Half-life 2 was an important piece of gameplay innovation that has since affected a lot of games outside its own genre.

System Shock, Deus Ex?
Well, yeah, the first game which added one new feature can be called innovative.. maybe.

Let me ask you then, why Dune 2 was innovative?

Half-Life. It pretty much recreated the FPS genre and is one of the most respected first-person shooters ever.

Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, Quake, Deus ex & System shock are also insanely innovative.

I would agree with you. Portal was very original, loaded with funnys, and had one hell of a gun that *gasp* doesn't shoot pointy or hot or icy or any other basicly deadly object, unless it was used creatively. Big shocker!

I'm amazed that Halo has not come up yet. I didn't think it was very inventive but some people do.

Halo does deserve mention- for effectively busting the paradigm of weapon design in modern FPSs. Off hand grenades and two-weapon carrying economy changed things for everyone.

Left 4 Dead started the whole "Director" concept replacing the whole monster closet idea, also with borderlands coming out soon with over 250,000 different variations of guns can give a better sense of character customization

Was done way before... Flashpoint? Codename -something- ? Any other more realistic FPS had it.
