Halo. Halo 3 had 3 million pre-orders (I believe), it brought shooters to the console and a whole generation of gamers with it. Truly an epic series in my opinion.
Are you off your meds or something? Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and the Turok series were the original FPS console games and those are only the ones that I've played.

OP: Legend of Zelda. It's even in the name.

Again, what I meant was that it was (and still is) the one of the most popular series' in console history, and in that respect, it brought shooters to the console.

EDIT - Ninja'd
Sure, they were the first, but they didn't make the genre. Halo brought it out and introduced console fps perfection to the masses, creating the standards by which almost all FPS(and plenty of 3PS) use. People became gamers because of Halo. Of course, IMO, this argument can also be used for CoD4, which has done the same thing. No less than ten of my friends have become gamers because they played CoD4.

LOL, for the win!

@ Jamash, you hold a very valid argument in support of GTA.

Those games invented the genre and Halo made it as popular as oxygen, so I'd say they have equal share in the greatness department.

I would have to either say Mario or Halo with sales and popularity.

Personally, Golden sun.

Taking sales into account, the Madden games reign supreme (American, at least. Not sure how well FF fares, but its gotta be high). As for the best series game wise? I would say the Elder Scrolls series or the Zelda series. Its a toss up, but Im leaning more towards Zelda.

final fantasy FTW! =)
Final Fantasy is great and all the games (not including 7)have left me with a smile on my face. Especially 1,2 and 3 which they re-released on the PSP. As a franchise it has more variants than Mario. The three tactics game are especially notable and, to a lesser extent, the new tower defense games that the PSN has scheduled.

In terms of scale and number id say the total war series. Thousands of men on the screen at once, ruling an empire the size of a continent. Doesn't get any better than that.

Also Sins of a Solar Empire. name another game where you can have hundreds of ships nuking some poor little planet.

Thats the stuff legends are made of.

Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Halo and Final Fantasy are the first series that come to mind.

I'm afraid to say it, but Warcraft.
And Command and Conquer, I'd say, is...

Meh.

Civilization? Age of Empires?

I think that the Prince of Persia series were the best games ever...hack if you don't believe me play the game yourself...when Yahtzee says that a game is good it means that he is really impressed by it
