All of these, except maybe MGS.

Thanks for that. I guess I have to put in "search bar approved" to not get these kinds of responses. i did a search, and turned up a couple a older threads on the subject, but none in the vein of what i was trying to spark. You fucking elitist.
Yeah, Cuddly actually has a point here.

Anyway...

Rayman.

I'm like the only person to say that, But R2:R and Rayman 3 both sit easily in my top ten.

Way to narrow it down, buddy. I'm thinking of the single most important series in the history of gaming.

*exasperated sigh* If you're going to do something like this, at least add some content pertaining to the discussion.

OT: I'm gonna go with Legend of Zelda, I've had so many good times with that game.

Like most people here have said, Mario and Zelda. Both of these franchises are awesome, and I won't stop playing them any time soon.

Can I remind certain users in this thread that the policy on repeat threads is clearly delineated in the posting guidelines?

You have all read the guidelines, right?

There have been many influential games. The legend of Zelda and Mario 64 set the plain for 3d games. Zelda oddly enough actually influenced many shooters with the aiming system and integrated the use of terrain (being able to hook shot onto objects made of wood and such things) and also had a dynamic plot and the typical boss fights that have been made famous on action adventure and RPG games. Mario helped out with the popularization of the older console games and made games more user friendly allowing for casual gamers.

What Halo did wasn't create a market for shooters or helped create casual gamers but what it did was popularize the multilayer gaming. Civilization was the first to breed the god games and made the PC games much more popular. Final fantasy was and is the most influential series when it comes to increasing the graphics engine of games. Street fighter (which im surprised no one mentioned) was the first to popularize the fighting game genre (It was not the first but it was the game that made the series popular). Doom helped with the FPS game series. GTA (and also mortal combat) got so much bad press that it actually introduced gaming to the mass media to where it wasn't at before, this made gaming not just a hobby but something that became world recognized. As much as i detest sports games madden, or more accurately blitz created sports games and made most of the useless sports games exist. There was also the Sim's who have become the most popular game series out there with sales that make any halo game quiver in there boots. tennis for two (or pong) was the first video game to exist and introduced the thought of games being digitized. Metal gear games helped out with dynamic plot and with the help of splinter cell introduced (or popularized, Cant think of many before them) the stealth genre. Half life basically created the physics engine that's used in many games...

Personally i like Zelda

Edit: sorry about misspellings

Probably Mario but I would like to say that the Thief series was/is still quite epic in it's own right.

Mario of course

Personal: Jak and Daxter, that game had it all
That game had nothing at all. The story was nothing but cliches and stereotypes, all but one type of fodder took just one hit, the only difficulty curve was the increasing bottomless pit/floor ratio, and the game mechanics were painfully bland. Admittedly, I enjoyed it, but only because it was my first video game ever.
*Glove slap*

Those games (Im talking about the series, look at the title of the thread).

They had a great storyline, where fun to play, had great level, awesome and funny characters, had many game mechanics (from shooting to riding in various vehicles to controlling robots).

Admittedly, the first one was the weakest in the series, but the series all together were some of the best games of all time.

How many games have guns that shoot atomic bombs, robot suits, flying cars, and hilarious ottsels?

Really? No one's gonna say anything about Metroid or Castlevania? Yes, Mario and Zelda are both dandy, but neither one really has any continuity. A minor gripe, I know, but a gripe nonetheless.

How about Dragon Quest/Warrior? You know, that whole "Earlier perfection of rpg mechanics." That's pretty legendary...

And, while we're talking about Warriors, perhaps Mechwarrior. With it's cool aesthetics, deep and innovative gameplay mechanics it helped turn people into the "Hardcore," gamers there are today. Plus, who knows where Halo would be without the whole online "Clan," idea.

Wait, did somebody say Ultima? No? ..... Maybe they should have.....

Halo. Halo 3 had 3 million pre-orders (I believe), it brought shooters to the console and a whole generation of gamers with it. Truly an epic series in my opinion.
This is proof that despite all those hip studies, video games arent making people smarter

The Legend of Zelda.

c'mon guys, its right in the name
You don't need to insult me for my (and a lot of other people's) preference. I don't judge you for liking LoZ just because it's not a game I like.
