Fire Emblem is a good mix of turn based strategy and RPG. The fact that every game but one in the series had a finite number of battles to prevent level grinding was a nice touch to avoid such things and whenever a character died they stayed dead forcing you to actually think your moves out. It is also the first JRPG series to take on western themes.
Hm? SRPGs have their own genre. It's not that much of a mix. Also, the arenas in the older games gave you gold for level grinding. Lots of it. And they were easily exploitable, to boot. They were uncommon, but gamebreaking. Nine and ten took steps to rectify this, but it's uncertain if the BEXP mechanic is going to be continued. The one-life system has issues, too. It makes you more cautious, sure, but it also punishes you for things like poor luck. Anybody who's spent ten minutes with FE can remember getting screwed over by misses at 90% hit, or having a character killed by a 2% critical. In other games you'd curse and adapt, but in FE, you have to reset the level, if it was a useful character.
I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned the upcoming Mirror's Edge, touted as a "First Person Runner", or something to that effect. Isn't there also a PS3 game that's a mixture of SRPG and shooter? Valkyria Chronicles, or something to that effect. I forget the title.
