Halo 3. As much as I love the series, there's no denying how horribly overhyped it was.

A close second would be another game that I still love but was overhyped, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights... any of those games that claims to be a real deep RPG solely because you often have three choices, which are pretty much always:
1. Polite, goodly respone
2. Rude, rebellious response
3. Homicidal, evil response

...Odds are none of those is anywhere near the character you really imagined, let alone your description if you wrote one. I consider Planescape Torment a different thing since it contains options like lying or telling the truth with the same words, plus I'm pretty sure it actually matters what you say, some of the time anyway.

Oh shit I forgot Final Fantasy!!! Yeah me too! My friend LIVES for Final Fantasy. She won't catch on that I'd rather throw the 60 bucks out the window than waste it on that crap. "Hey Brittany u getting the new FF?!" "Um....No!!"
The Final Fantasy series has had its ups and downs, but I doubt it will reach its highest peaks again. V, VI and VII were great IMO, VIII too despite its various severe shortcomings (some pretty dull battles, even worse tutorials...), but before and after that I'd say it really hasn't been all that great, sometimes barely qualifying as average imitative JRPGs. X was a pleasant surprise, but X-2 induced puking reflexes in my soul. *shudder*

Any recently released game seams to be over hyped, but personally for me it would have to be Assassins Creed.
This. Assassins creed was so over-hyped for what was basically an average game that everyone has forgotten about.

Fallout 3 (Good, but the gunplay sucks)
Final Fantasy 7
Chrono Trigger (Cross was fantastic, though)
Any Mario games, especially all of the Kart ones

Half-Life 2, so many people I know foam at the mouth for this game, but I thought it was an average shooter, with some really fun physics and puzzles.

Final Fantasy.

There, I said it. NOW BRING ON THE FLAMES!
Final Fantasy has the worst combat I have ever experienced.
Period.
Turn-based combat in which your turn is based on a cooldown? WTF is that?

In other words: hear, hear!

BioShock. Everyone blathers about how wonderful it is. I actually caught myself dozing off when playing it.

Every JRPG ever. They have no redeeming qualities at all, so if someone says something positive about one, you know they're lying. In fact, you know they're lying if they call it an RPG, because if you try playing one you realize there's no interactive storytelling, which is what defines an RPG.

Modern warfare games. Everyone seems to tout them as being so much better than games like Halo and Gears of War, but I don't understand that. Shouldn't a game be fun?

Most recently I say Resident Evil 5. I enjoyed the game, but it's not quite as fantastic as some would have you believe.
What didn't you like about Resident Evil 5?

I thought it was a great end to that story.
Again, it's a fine game that I did enjoy quite a bit... for the 10 hours that it took to beat it on Veteran. Then I played through it again to find the BSAA emblems, and I beat it in 4:45. The story/characters/gameplay/enemies/etc. were all fine, but it was pretty short, and overall it wasn't exactly the super-awesome-fest that like 8 of my friends made it out to be.

Good game, but I don't think it's even top three in the RE series.

p.s. plus the fact that they basically made Wesker = Vamp (from MGS) kinda made me laugh. I was expecting Sheva to yell something like "Snake! Use CQC!"

Thats nice,I'll mail you some matches.

Also the FF fans I know are nice people who could care fucking less that you don't like Final Fantasy. Sure there are some crazy fans but every fanbase has them.

Far Cry 2, by a country mile.

I saw it in PC World for £20 and seriously considered buying it seeing as it'd only come out three weeks earlier.

I'm glad i chose Rock Band 2 instead, because I borrowed FC2 from a friend and I got bored after half an hour, I really tried to like it, but after an hour and a half I couldn't take much more.

I'm all for free-choice in games, but it has no structure or overall goal, not from what I could see.

Mine are: the Half-Life and Halo series' Half-Life left me feeling like "I don't get it" While Halo was good but not worth all the hype. Don't hate me. Now what are yours?
These are EXACTLY the two I would have picked. I didn't think any of the HLs or Halos were bad, I just didn't think they lived up to the hype. Actually, scratch that, I did think Halo 1 was horrible.

Mass Effect is another one. Everyone I know told me to get that game and all the reviews said good things and I frakken hated it. I still can't even understand how anyone could possibly like it.

For me, this is going to have to be Spore.

When you think about it, Spore's hype was so huge that by the time it came out, people thought we were actually going to have the game of the century or at the very least a demi-god amongst games that would put all others to shame with it's magnificent glory and enjoyability.

After months upon months of hyping up this unique idea, getting celebrities to playtest the game and keeping everyone in suspense, Spore delivered absolutely nothing. The game itself was enjoyable, for about a week, by which time you realized that you had seen, done and explored pretty much everything. The game suffered from lack of content which it tried to compensate for by providing a very lengthy (but ultimately boring) endgame.

So that's it. Spore. Definitely.

Halo. The first one was great but 2 was just a crappy version of the first game. And while 3 was good it was still overrated to death.

Also, for the people who say they don't understand why people liked Half-life 2 so much:

You have to keep it in mind that Half-life 2 is not a recent tittle, it's over 4-5 years old. Standards have grown allot since it's release and while it may not look stunning now it was awesome when it first came out in 2004 or 2005 (i don't really remember).

I mean let's go back in time for a few moments. Let's say it's the year or 2004, at that time The original Unreal Tournament was about as old back then as Half-life 2 is now. Would you try to compare the original Unreal Tournament to Half-life 2 and then say: Oh! But Unreal Tournament is SO poor compared to what i have played recently!

Saying something like that would be no different then trying to compare Half-life 2 to something released recently.
No I played it when it first came out and I didn't like it.
