I always love this thread. It's like a big pool of negativity and hatred.
The INTERNET is a big pool of negativity and hatred, so what's your point?
I often wonder why I keep coming back to this festering cesspool (the Internet, I mean).

OT: The only game I think I'm qualified to say is overrated is Final Fantasy VII. I say this because it's a game I've actually played. There are plenty of popular games which I fail to see the appeal, but I can't honestly say whether or not they're overrated since I haven't actually played them. As for Final Fantasy VII, I would never by any means say it's a bad game, it's a good game, after all it was the first Final Fantasy I'd ever played. However it's not good enough to warrant the fanatical fan following it has. Esp. since the main antagonist spends half the game frozen in an ice cube and the other half in the bottom of a hole. Also I swear Sephiroth was channeling Norman Bates.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. I played it on PC recently and it was just so bad I could not finish it. Sure, the graphics have dated since it first came out but it has issues like the clunky combat, the dodgy voice acting and the boring storyline that you'd think would've been heavily criticised even when it first came out. Instead, it won multiple Game of the Year Awards and the sequel is one of the most anticipated games of the year.I just don't understand why.

Planescape: Torment is very overrated. The game sacrificed gameplay for dialogue and boring stuff and the ending was anticlimactic. Also the box was ugly.

Also, morrowind. Dumb combat system and boring world.

Finally, the call of duty series.

[inevitable comment] Oh, he just hates FPS's. Why don't you go back to Zelda?[/inevitable comment]
and the change-up...
>Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

LoZ:ALttP just never seemed to grab me. I loved Ocarina and wish they would make another sidescroller like Zelda 2, but I never felt like LoZ:ALttP stood out among its brothers the way it does for other people.

Oblivion. Everything is there that I enjoy yet I just can't. Have never finished the game, got bored after a few hours on my 4 attempts to play through it, even trying to do things differently.

It is, hands down, the worst FF game ever made, and the FF series as a whole is largely just average anyways! So, what's so bad about it? Let's begin.
Dude, have you even seen a screenshot of Final Fantasy II, V, or X? Those are significantly worse.
1) I own and have beaten all three of these.

2) "Seen a screenshot?" Basing it off graphics? Go away please.
I'm implying you could look at a screenshot from any given point in any of those games (except during battles in FFX) and see shit happening. Yes, a graphics criticism does apply to II and V, but that wasn't the point. The point was, they're shit.
1) Screenshots are nothing. Also, "graphics criticism?" Oh, I do so love a gamer who can't enjoy a perfectly acceptable game since it doesn't look pretty and HD.

2) On the topic of "shit," I'd like to remind you that the first story-based FF was 4, so II has a free pass. V was subparm in story but the gameplay made up for it. X was frustrating in the sense that everyone eventually became clones, but they knew how to do a good boss fight (a level of challenge without absurd HP amounts that make the fights boring) and had even bit-characters who were more interesting than the entire FFVII cast combined.

3) If you want to convince me these games are worse than VII, you need to try way way harder, and any further mention of graphics will nullify your argument completely, since you ARE saying X is worse than VII.

Dragon Age was pretty meh, but then I never got the feeling that it was overrated. GTA: San Andreas, yes expansive, huge, bikes, cheeseburgers, but damn was it ugly, the early game gang wars only served to highlight how crappy the combat in the GTA3 line really was.

Now I gotta say a few words to all the Valve haters. Portal isn't the second coming, but it was charming, it's largely unseen antagonist was truly a breath of fresh air in the wasteland of game writing. Half life one was one of the most immersive FPS's I've ever played, it didn't push the technology, but it pushed the experience, and the community has created tons of great mods. Sure Gordon Freeman is a mute, but Masterchief never says much aside from dealing with the mission or being stoic, Duke Nukem is one of the only FPS characters who expresses himself much, and look where that's got him. I will say HL2 was a letdown, hard to say why.

CoD without a doubt. It's fun, but couldn't they bother to juice each game up a bit more? Probably the biggest changes since CoD4 has been little things like Nazi Zombies and the Wager Matches. This is fine and all, but other than a new terribly implausible story line, every game is very similar. Sure MW2's a bit shinier and has some new bits and pieces to play with, but it's largely the same game asides from a short campaign. I mean with Halo they're always adding and taking away stuff. Halo Reach was a big huge jump from Halo 3 as opposed to MW2 which was a few steps up from CoD 4.

Left 4 Dead. Sorry but I could never really get into it. It gets incredibly repetitive for me extremely fast and it feels rather restrained as opposed to other zombie games gameplay-wise.

There is no such thing as overrated, it all depends on taste or sometimes the mood of the person playing the game.

You sir, win a cookie. I have never been able to understand Borderland's appeal - it's the blandest game I've ever played in my life. It's akin to Desert Bus to me.

Though at a pinch, the second most over-rated game I've played is Team Fortress 2 closely followed by Halo 3.

I gotta say Dragon Age. Wasn't my thing.
Indeed. Sometimes on the higher levels combat was just so slow It may as well have been pen and paper. The combat sucking and the fact that it has delusions of being TES are what I disliked about it.

Well, I'm sorry that HD didn't exist in the late 80's, early 90's. They made the games as aesthetically pleasing as possible, with the tools available at the time.

What about FF 2 and 5 are "shit"? I really can't raise points against your argument(s) and/or points unless you actually raise some. As Ranylyn probably said complaining about graphics will count against you. Go on, convince me that two of my favourite FF games (as far as gameplay mechanics go) are shit. Go at them, bro.

Just curious, but have you played Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest? It's almost as bad as FF7. Almost.

in response to the anti-halo comments: personally i think bungie is what makes halo awesome. without them its just another shooter with aliens. they do stuff like include the macaroni sculpture made for a RvB video in the stuff they are auctioning. you don't see things like that from many developers. =]

ot: i have to say "vanilla" minecraft, however once you get into all the mods, that game definitely is all its cracked up to be =]

NOTICE ME!!

Can we stop this blatant overuse of the word 'overrated'? I only really apply to something is objectively not very good, but many believe it is. It's hard to apply objective reasoning when this discussion is purely based on opinion, but if the general critical consensus is that something is good but you really don't feel that way, then feel free to say it's overrated.

Example: I was hanging out with a few friends midday Halloween. We weren't going to get drunk for a few hours, so someone decided to pop in the movie Beetlejuice. A lot of people claim to like it, but my head-voices in my mind was all tellin' me, "Oh no, this movie is terrible. I don't like it and I also don't like Alec Baldwin's face." I know this is a bit of a grey area, but I would posit that it was overrated to me.

OT: Some games that I think are "objectively" overrated (because they aren't even good, but people have still recommended them).
-Deadly Premonition (irony doesn't sell a game)
-Any 3D Sonic
-Dynasty Warriors
-Luigi's Mansion
-Killer Instinct

Btw, Mass Effect copying Gears of War ? How in the What now ? Aside from both using the same perspective, both games play radically different. I'ld say Mass Effect is one of the rare RPGs I might enjoy playing a second time through. And GoW... well thats just satisfying gorey shooting between chest high walls.
