In terms of over-hyped games, Spore. That will always be my answer to this question.
I really wanted to buy that game. Whats wrong with that game?
It's just nothing like it was supposed to be. I followed it from the beginning. When they released the demo for creature creation, I loved it. The game did nothing to make me believe that it would not live up to expectations, but it somehow failed.

First, the creation aspect of the game is fine. It exceeded my expectations. You can make nearly any creature or vehicle and the game will still find a way to have them move and behave properly (usually).

But while the creation aspect of the game is great, the game play is terrible. You make these amazing creations but you have nothing to do with them. The game play is repetitive and shallow. Your only options for dealing with other species are to be friends or kill them. Eventually, being friends stops being an option (it becomes absurdly difficult to make and maintain relationships between other species, and at some times it is impossible). So eventually you just have to kill almost everyone. And while you can build nearly any type of building you can imagine, you have to shove them into stupid little peg holes in each city. Customization is very limited there, which was supposed to be one of the game strong points. It only becomes more limited when you reach the space stage.

One of the things they always talked about was how you would be able to change planets in almost any way. Carve rivers into the planet, terraform the planet, draw designs into the planet with crater. But in the final game the only way you can change the planets is with stupid cookie cutter designs. So almost every planet, no matter how you try to customize them, ends up looking the same. This only enhanced by the fact that in order to terraform a planet you have to throw down some plants and animals onto its surface. Usually this involves planting down the same generic creatures and flora you have gathered form your own planets. I'm not even going to talk about diplomacy and combat in the space stage, suffice to say that it is both pathetic and frustrating.

TL;DR: Spore has some great customization in the initial stages, but the poor gameplay and lack of customization later in the game ruins the experience.
Haha well fuck, i was really looking forward to getting that game. Your review alone may have just killed it for me. Not saying its a bad thing, but it seems so undesirable now.....

Is it just me or is the same thing that happened to Halo happening to Half-life now? Seems as if all the games people once said were MEGA AWESUM are now "meh, mediocre" or a "pile of overrated crap". Not here to start a fight with anyone who doesn't like either of these games, because whatever you like/dislike is your business, but I'm starting to see a lot more Half-life hate across the interwebs.

OT: For me it was GTAIV. I even over hyped it myself. I tried to like it, I tried not to be disappointed...but I was. Also I'm going agree with whoever said Gears of War. Don't get me wrong, I love that game (maybe I like gears 2, maybe a little minus the multiplayer). I had some good times, I had some great times, some times I'll never forget. But was it the be all end all everyone made it out to be before release? Absolutely not.

GTA 4, all most evert gaming website acted like it was the second coming of Christ. It was not a terrible game, no where need the perfect tens it was getting, at most id give it a 7.0. It wasn't the games fault, wait no it was, it was a big pile of mediocrity and poor shoot and driving mechanics. Also Gears of War 2, its a somewhat fun shooter, with good controls, but thats it, there was nothing revolutionary about it. If fact i think I will kill unique ideas in gaming. When something as generic ad Gears sells so well why would you do anything else. And lastly any and all sports games, they all suck,

Someone here watches Yahtzee....
I've know about it for along time though, it was worse in the sims 2 when they needed going to the loo every 5 minutes
But Yahtzee sums it up much better then I could

The search bar is no over rated, it saves The Escapist from having stupid repeat threads and list threads in this case too
It helps the moderaters and maks The Escapist a better place and there is no good reason not to check your thread hasn't been done before, it's not bloody hard
Now can you think of a single reason why it's over rated?

Bioshock. I bought it than happily gone home to have fun with it all night long but i was disappointed a lot.

Counter-Strike. That's the worst game I have ever played with.
Counter strike? source?
i dissagree i think it's a great FPS!
the only problem with the game is that when your a new player you get your ass kicked
i'd like to hear some reasons please
It's 1.6. Anyway I knew that they will kick my ass for a pretty long time when i bought the game, that's not problem. The problem is the system. It's pure luck. I mean the moments when your crouching with an m4 shooting 2-3 round bursts at someone and he jumps and runs all over while mindlessly spraying and headshots you.
ah is see, well i gues your right, but that is something that could happen in every FPS couldn't it?

That was pretty bad. I got bored of it the first week I played cause it was the same like Melee, cept better graphics and more characters. Yeah, for me I would be Brawl.

Ok I never said -Snip-. I was only joking about the search bar... you know a joke? Also threads need to be repeated because people often forget stuff. It is only beneficial to the escapist but the world isn't that perfect.

Halo but Killzone2 was worse. At least Halo had decent AI seriously I made it through about 80% of killzone2 using nothing but the knife. When you rush 'em they'll bug out and duck behind cover and then slashing them is so easy. Plus the vehicle section sucked, the story was boring and cliche, the color pallet makes Gears of War look like a vibrant rainbow, and did I mention the AI is flaky at best what with enemies adamantly following scripted routes towards buildings/cover/restrooms even if you shoot them. So in conclusion at least Halo was decent and colorful though both games would have benefited from having more of a sense of humor.

Snip just means it will save the thread having a ridiculously long post
Yeah but I am talking this thread has been done several times this week, I don't mind if the thread is repeated every other month but to have the same thread within a few days is just annnoying
and joke? What is this joke you speak of?

Shit this thing has been done a 1000 times and STILL people are giving all the wrong answers.

Hey, it's not very hard to come up with a game that is actually bad, that very few people like and still got good ratings.

There are quite a few overrated games, while Halo 1 and WoW are fairly decent, both are monstrously overrated.

Let's see... Super Smash Brothers Brawl was overrated, it wasn't even that good. Two Worlds overrated itself, it sucked camel balls and compared itself to a fairly good game, Oblivion. Halo 3 was definitely overrated. I agree about Soul Caliber 4, it wasn't good enough to warrant the price and the hype.

AH!!!!!! Almost forgot the 2 top-of-the-listers: Call of Duty 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4, neither were particularly good but people EVERYWHERE are shitting their pants about how amazingly good it is. Also is it a coincidence that there are so many games with a 4 in the few years or what?
