Hype is one of the biggest crimes against any form of media. which games do you think were over-hyped and over-rated?

I'll go first with Soul Calibre 4, lets be honest that was only plastered everywhere because of the input of Star Wars characters but the game is not only extremely slow-paced (especially compared to DBZ: Burst Limit) but it also has a horrible and unnatural fighting mechanic.
The characters seem to have a moment inbetween attacks where they stop dead for a second or two, I often ponder what they are thinking...contemplating life perhaps.

What do you think? which games do my fellow escapists feel were over-rated and over-hyped?

Biggest overhype of all time: Star Fox Adventures. Originally not supposed to be a star fox game (FOR GOOD REASONS) it added the element of fox without the space part (or have the space part be a very tiny piece of the game) and was hyped to oblivion. The game, first time through was kinda interesting as a "new" starfox game, but once you completed it, you looked back and thinked... "What the eff did I just play???"

I don't think Soul Caliber was overated - it was shit but I don't think enough people cared about the game. Hmmm I would say LoZ OoT but I only played it for about an hour before I got bored (note I played it years after it came out).

I agree that Soul Calibre was a bit crap, but if I am honest (and im rather ashamed to say) if i were ever to defend a game it would be LoZ:OoT because even by todays standards its still a good and solid game

I'm gonna go with Gears of War, and I realise I'm going to be flamed so much for this, but when I played it I found it to be way to repetitive. I understand why people enjoy playing it, but as for me, I've played better third person shooters.

half life 2 wasn't bad... weapon choice was a bit limited, i'll say that. i was hoping for weird alien weapons- i got a plasma rifle and that's it.

most overhyped? hmm... bioshock. fun game, but not the be all and end all

Halo may have been the innovator of a lot of modern FPS elements, but it did not perfect them. I find it to be utterly pedestrian.

GTA 4. Everyone was hailing it as Jesus Christ on super speed before they even played it. And in the end Saint's Row was ten times better. Rockstar needs to get of their high horse.

In terms of over-hyped games, Spore. That will always be my answer to this question.
Are you feeling okay, Kraken? You didn't say anything about the search bar.
I'm not surprised if you gave up though, it seems to have no effect.

I always thought GTA4 was overhyped, especially since I was still going on GameSpot at that time and noticed that they'd given it a perfect 10, which I tend to think is the cardinal sin of reviewing anyway.

Most overhyped game definitely has 4 letters in total, starts with H, ends with "lo" and has an "a" in there somewhere.

Bioshock was defintiely overhyped too. I was expecting something revolutionary and instead I just got a game I had actually already played. They should have just said at launch "it's System Shock 2 with prettier graphics and dumber gameplay for kiddies" and I would've got the general picture.

It's just that I played some games like LoZ:OoT and FF7 for the first time years after they were released, i.e. when the 360 first came out. I just can't get into them as I can't look past some old problems that fans look past as they have the experience of playing it when it was first released and these problems didn't exist. (i.e. graphics, speech, cutscenes)
That's why I hope they remake some of these games just with improved graphics etc.

Well I'm gonna get some stick for this but I'm going to say CoD4+5. The only really good thing is the multiplayer, but that gets repetitive and uninteresting really fast.

Yeah I agree with Halo.
It was good, but it was to repetitive to be ZOMFG AMUZING!!!11
My point exactly.
