In terms of over-hyped games, Spore. That will always be my answer to this question.
This. A thousand times over.

Also, I predict using my otherworldly powers that this thread will go bad.

Halo. I found it to be a decent game when I played it but it does not deserve all the hype it gets.

GTA4. I don't care what anbody says, 10 out of 10? No. Boring, lifeless, and un-exciting, everything GTA shouldn't be.

I'm going to agree that Soul Calibre 4 is somewhat overatd, I personally enjoy it somewhat, in large part thanks to the character creation, but I can't help but think that DOA has done irreperable damage to the fighting genre by substituting gameplay and good character design for over the top boob physics, because they are hugely present in that game, and have been in fighting games to the point where there no longer is a point.

I think these 'what game is overrated' threads shouldn't exist as it is a chance to be bitter and cynical and also a chance to start flame wars. That's all these threads accomplish and I think along with Halo Hate Threads and Spammer Threads, stuff like this should get locked. All these threads achieve is making people hate each other. Also I'd like to note people use the word 'overrated' way too often and in my opinion it's just become a fancy word for 'shit' I mean I remember this guy made a video on youtube saying Halo was overrated and he literally just kept saying:
"It's overrated, it's overrated, it's overrated."
Over and over and over again, it was insane, he made no points. Overrated as a word is thrown around a lot these days and often, to me at least, it feels like a substitute for an actual argument which in turn kills conversation and that is pivotal in starting flame wars. If we want to survive as a forum threads like this need to go.

Sorry, OP I don't blame you, really I can see you are new here it's just 'what game is overrated' threads are a real scourge on this site and need to be removed. So I am not aiming this at you, by any means. I hope to see more of you and welcome to the escapist by all means, in all fairness I'll answer your post with the game Far Cry 2 because I found it boring as all hell. Uninspired, uninteresting, confusing and boring. But the thing is, that doesn't make it so, that's just my opinion. I cannot prove that.
I apologise in advance if this seems too mean, but I really had to speak my mind. Welcome to the Escapist, I mean that sincerly.

P.S I agree on Soul Calibur 4, I liked the character create system but beyond that there wasn't much fun especially when you consider all my friends knew how to play it and I didn't so they mercilissley beat me to a pulp. But still there is some novelty in watching a pale haired voluptous dominatrix taking the whip to a lizard wearing a hat wielding a giant chicken leg is there not?

I think Halo 3, especially if you look at the reviews it had. Also Ocarina of Time, which I bought a year ago and was incredibly dissapointed by (although Majora's Mask more than made up for that).

Not sure I agree with the Halo Haters, mainly because I am not sure if they are talking about the whole series or just one of them. When Halo came out with the Xbox, it was the big title to own with it. It was a very well done FPS compared to any other console FPS at the time. (Note, I said console, PC always will have better FPS.) I don't think the original was over-rated for the time. Now the sequels. . .

I totally agree regarding Spore. It was no where near what we were told it was going to be.

Well, first I would like to point out that over-hyped and over-rated are two completely different things.

Over-rated are too numerous to go into.
In the over-hyped category I will start by putting forth a couple of Xbox launch games.

First off, Halo. The weapons were unimaginative and were horribly unbalanced. Killing someone across a great distance with the shotgun is not realistic. Neither was the ridiculous dominance of the handgun.

Secondly, Project Gotham Racing. They kept showing off how pretty the game is and the realistic damage the cars had. Unfortunately I had already played the game when it was a Dreamcast game called Metropolis Street Racer. The Kudos System was one of the most broken systems of scoring I have seen in a racing game.

Now on to PS2. Have to be fair after all. The most over-hyped on that platform had to be Final Fantasy X. For a successor to FFIX, it was terrible. The gameplay was linear. Sure it had pretty graphics but the fun part of a Final Fantasy is the exploration of the world. This had none.

But the perennial winner of the most over-hyped has to be EA Sports lineups, especially Madden. Every few years, they change something that impresses the reviewers but generally it is the same game with new rosters each and every year and yet they boast of how much better the game is.

ill go with the easy one and say brawl
Holy shit... someone else actually thinks that... I rented Brawl and thought it was lame...

Also:
Halo series
Gears of War
Spore (which I got bored with the creature creator before the game was even out)
F.E.A.R. 2... well... more over hyped... When I first heard about it being announced as Project Origin (back before Perseus), I was excited, but the game was more of a let down... demo had the only scary part and the rest was bland in terms of scariness... still a good game though...

I've heard that from someone at school before... about it being the first well-done FPS game on consoles, and that is the only believable reason I've heard for why it is so great... I have it on PC, and meh...
