Twilight is the easy target. Downright awful. But I think i'll go with something that has irked me for a while...

Aside from Kill Bill vol. 1 and Reservoir Dogs which I actually liked, everything else Quentin Tarantino has done has been mind-crushingly overrated; Death Proof being the chief offender. That was just an hour and a half of Tarantino showing us how in love with his own writing he is.

That movie isn't overrated. That would have to mean that people defend it. It's just crap that everyone knows is crap.

Speaking of Ang Lee movies that took it up the pooper (figuratively as well as literally) Brokeback Mountain anyone? Tell me that movie wasn't overrated as all hell. How far can the novelty of Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger kissing and humping go?
really? i rerembered thier being a huge hype? or maybe im just being a noob lol but Brokeback mountain overated? I really enjoyed that film yea the sex scene was like its main selling point that i agree with but in terms of art from i thought it was a brill film

Matrix. Sorry if I don't get excited about the main character being able to stop bullets.
Come on man. As Simon Pegg pointed out, it's now almost trendy to dislike the Matrix. While your at it, lets talk about how bad Episode I and JarJar are.
When did this happen? I thought it was trendy to love it! Oh well, guess I'l have to pay closer attention to these things.

Matrix was totally cool! The philosof... phil - it was real deep man! Man that lobby scene was awesome! Ooh, the bullet stopping thingy too! He really pwned those guys!

Is it still trendy to hate Halo? I'm getting tired of posting how good the game is in all the hate threads.
It happened one day when you were on the can. It was a real quick announcement. And it's alright to hate Halo as long as you're not a jock, or a guy who tells everyone he's a jock while sitting at his computer putting down handfuls of cheetos like they were vitamins. Anything else you need an update you on, you can email me at icanbesarcastictoo@wittybanter.com
Thank you, master!
You are welcome. Kiss my ring.

It was a love story, that was dragged out WAAAAAY to long.

I personally thought Batman Begins was over hyped beyond belief. However, TDK was good.

Yeah, they tried to hype it up before it came out, but it was never overrated. Again, people would have to have liked the movie for it to fall under the definition of "overrated". As for Brokeback, I didn't find it particularly artsy myself, but as I've said many times over the course of this thread, to each his own.

Wow, I wouldn't invoke the fires of hell on the movie, but it is certainly overrated. I feel for that Jon Heder guy. He's never gonna live that role down.

Whats with all the hate towards the godfather movies? ure, part 3 sucked donkey balls but 1 and 2 are some of the greatest film classics ever.

I have made it my personal crusade to show all of you why you are wrong about it:

The cast is one of the best casts in the history of casts with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan, Diane Keaton all of them acting their asses off to gives us one of their best performances ever.

The script is one of the best, the story is never boring and keeps you on the edge of your seet. We also feel for these characters despite the fact that most of 'em are killers. I saw the movie multiple times and it always kept me entertained.

Lastly, you cannot deny the influence this film has had on both other movies and popular culture.
Before the Godfather came along gangster films were ridiculed as an inferior kind of cinema unworthy of attention, if it werent for this film we wouldnt have other classics such as Goodfellas, Once upon a time in America, scarface, carlito's way, etc.

If any of you have any real counterpoints instead of the whole "everybody likes the godfather so I'm going to be all artsy and alternative and say it sucks" then by all means, tell me.
Dude, seriously? Have you never heard the line "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? That means that some people perceive things like "beauty" or "movie quality" different then yourself, which in turn, makes your "crusade" redundant. But you want counterpoints? fair enough

Your first point was the cast. The fact that a movie has an ensemble cast does not a good movie make. Just watch "He's Just Not that Into You" (or don't). Again, I personally wasn't moved by their performances the way you were, and I've been made to watch this movie at least half a dozen times.

Your second point is the script. Granted, Mario Puzo is a great writer. But I found it to be lackluster, and I can tell you exactly how many times I was on the edge of me "seet" over the course of the movie. Zero. I was bored each and everytime I watched the movie, and I seriously tried not to be.

Your third point is how it inspired a generation of mob movies afterward. Again, this has no bearing on the quality of the film. The movie grossed a ton of money. It would be stupid for studios not to jump on that bandwagon. It's not like a shitty movie never inspired other shitty movies. And by the way, if someone on this forum hasn't mentioned Scarface, let me be the first. WAY overrated.

My point is that opinions are going to vary on any movie. To say people are "wrong" for not liking a movie is naive and more than a little dickish.

I don't care that people like the godfather, or if they hate it for that matter, it's a sign of arrogance to tell other people what movies to like. I'm gonna bat this home if it kills me.
First off I never said that the movie was good because it had an ensemble cast, I said it was good because of the quality (not quantity) of the acting.

Secondly the fact of whether you like the script is obviously a matter of opinion and there is nothing I can do to change that.

Thirdly saying that you are wrong for not liking the movie probably was a bit dickish of me so please accept my apology.

Im not saying this is your case but a lot of time people just say the godfather sucks just because it is regarded as one of the best films of all time without actually going in to detail about what they thought was wrong about it.

Anyway, let's just agree to disagree.

Well firstly, you cited cast as a reason for the movie being so good. I know you you didn't imply that it was the sole reason, I was merely making an argument of contrast.

As for apologies, no need. I was merely making a point that I'm glad you took to heart, and I think your final note says it all, lets agree to disagree.

You very politely although not so succinctly implied that people who don't like the Godfather or There Will Be Blood are wrong for not liking those movies. And before you hit me up for saying that you didn't "say" that, you very much meant for us to draw that inference. I've watched both of those movies multiple times. While I didn't "hate" there will be blood, I can certainly agree to it's overrated-ness. And the Godfather flicks straight up don't do it for me. And if you don't mean to be a "snobby 'if you don't like it then you don't understand it'" type, then why did you flat out say "then the chances are you're approaching it the wrong way"? I'm sorry, but that is snobby, no two ways about it. I've given the Godfather multiple chances to "grow" on me. I've kept an open mind, and I still think it's long, drawn out, drivel that Mario Puzo intelligently capitalized on. Of course thats my OPINION and I don't think anyone is wrong for not feeling the way I do. See what I did there? I stated my opinion and post scripted that I don't take it personally if they happen to like it.
In some of the few ways its possible for a film to be objectively good, those films are. They are not bad films. I'm not inferring that its wrong to dislike these movies, just if you find it boring then perhaps you are looking for the wrong things in it. I'm snobbish towards ignorant, not opposing opinions. If someone has a reasonably well informed opinion of the film, then it gets due respect from me. My first post was an initial reaction to some posters calling the films boring. I meant to encourage people like that to re-evaluate their approach - not to belittle their views. It may just not be a film to their preference, but it at least deserves another chance.

I am a bit of a film snob, but that wasn't meant to have a bearing on my post. Both films are overrated anyway, but it doesn't mean to say they are crap which is the view I took issue with.

Forest Gump, everyone kept telling me it was really great and you know what? it was really dull, I just don't know what people see in it
