Final Fantasy VII.

I mean its good and all, but the praise it gets is like its the single greatest game in the history of games. I can find a better game in the same series. Several, in fact.

It goes...

1. FF X
2. FF IX
3. FF VII
4. FF VIII
5. FF XII

That's without counting the NES/SNES ones...and I'm willing to flip the order of 8 and 9. The reason FF VII gets so much praise it's because, as the first of them all, it sort of set the bar and is the standard others are measured with. And, yeah, being the first definitely makes it deserving of some credit, but I agree that others actually offer a better story, better gameplay, etc.

I will now begin dodging the oncoming hate bullets.

Why 9 at 2? Most people I talk to hated that game. Personally, I liked it because it had style, and returned to allowing 4 party members in battle, but that's hardly reason enough for the majority of FF players.

My submission to this thread is any mainstream game from the last 2 years. If it wasn't the first in the franchise, then it was probably overrated. I'm looking mainly at GTA4 and Halo3. I shouldn't comment on them because I haven't really played them, but I can tell that despite perfect, or nearly perfect scores, people's interest is waning in them while other games are still getting attention.

OT: I think Battlefield: Bad Company and TF2 are pretty overrated.

But it doesn't suck, it's just very overrated.

The Metal Gear solid series (Even ones were worse than odd, the higher the number the lower the quality. There is also the whole "Movie pretending to be a game' thing against it.)

Anyway, Mirrors Edge isn't as good as I've been told either. I mean, I hated the thing. People told me it was basically Assassins Creed with more focus on parkour, but I felt it was a step down.

Yikes. Got some MW2 hate. Not sure how it took a step back from CoD4... What with the host transfer system, the title and emblem system... I think MW2 is a great game.

OT: Halo 3.

Yes, this site has a metric ton of hate for that game. It's getting really annoying hearing about how awful and horrible it is, when frankly a lot of work was put into it and it shows. All I can picture when I read some of these posts is someone sitting there, crossing their arms and pouting.

For me, it definitely has to be Modern Warfare 2. It had a short, stupid campaign, multiplayer that was a step backwards from CoD 4, and this game received a metascore of 94. The only thing they added was a co op mode which isn't even that good. The reviews of this game drive me to insanity because they state the major flaws and give it 10/10 anyways and people praise it.

Can I just point out that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was in fact taking a step backwards from Call of Duty: World at War which was taking a small step forward from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which had taken a good step backwards from Call of Duty 3 which had taken a giant leap backwards from Call of Duty 2 which itself was mediocre compared to the original Call of Duty and it's expansion pack?

So... Over-rated game? Well, I'm not going to say "Everything after Call of Duty 2" because Call of Duty 3 quite rightly got bad reviews across the board so instead I'll say "Any Call of Duty game made by the new developers."

Also, Halo 3. Enough said.

Probably the whole Orange Box for me, I really didn't care for Half-Life 2, Portal was ok, and Team Fortress 2 was kinda fun. But, maybe I didn't like it because I got the console version.

The definite reason you didn't enjoy it was because of that. PC version is far superior.

MW2, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Twilight Princess, Crysis.

I fully agree with Star Wars Force Unleashed - only game I've ever rented and brought back to return it and demand my money back after the first ten minutes of gameplay. F*ck that game and the Lucas it rode in on.

And I confess, I was severely disappointed in Zelda Twilight Princess. Lots of fun until you get turned into a dog, then it's just a grindtastic pain in the ass...and it goes on for far...too...long...

I hope you realize that its all about opinion. And if they do as you said, Its because theyre paid to do it, in any case, just give Yahtzee a few days so he can let you have it your way.

Time for a double-whammy.

Halo (the whole thing) is overhyped, overbearing, overrated. If it's one thing that has immediately impressed upon me that it is shit, it is the people going on and on in a mindless fashion about the FPS with the incomprehensible story and Master CHEF. Halo, a magnet for every kind of player that you hate and a euphemism for being 'godly' to boot. This thread, which is damning it with a stake and battleaxe, is a breath of fresh air. The only thing out of Halo I ever liked is Machinima, because it at least acknowledges that it's taking the piss.

And now, World of Warcraft. I don't have any trouble seeing why people fall into this. The problem is that I see it as mind-sucking and actually dangerous. Not like any harp about video game violence. Quite the opposite. Welcome to mass-apathy to the point of uselessness, where we get the Omega Man (Me, probably) doing his Charleton Heston impersonation, wondering if there's anyone else around. In reality, they're on the game. If that's not an argument for being overrated (Why do they let this game dominate their lives?), then I don't know what is.

Modern Warfare?

Sorry, but got to be Halo 3 and Halo: ODST. Halo 3's story was backwards, but the multiplayer was fun. And ODST just made no sense, the shock troopers were stronger than masterchief. It would hve been more fun if they had made it similar to a modern warfare title, none of this stamina crap. Give them an ordinary health bar just like the old days.
