Half Life 2, Fable 2, and Gears of War 2 (Guess 2 is a bad number eh?)

None of them were terrible and I finished all of them, but none were anywhere close to the hype.

Gears of War 2 had great single player but the online (which is what I wanted it most for) was terrible. A shotgun fest with matchmaking that takes 5 minutes to find a game.

Fable 2 was just...meh. The combat felt too loose and the story was boring. Also, the world was wayyyyy too small for a game that claims to be an epic RPG.

And Half Life 2 was generic, the exact opposite of what everyone claimed it was. A cookie cutter shooter with a cool physics engine that gets ruined by stupid physics puzzles (although I LOVED the gravity gun); plus long vehicle sequences that were tedious due to their start and stop nature and TERRIBLE driving controls (Played on a 360 and I know the game was made for PC so that might be my problem).

Well then nearly every big AAA title in the past few years is the most overrated to somebody.

I'll vote Spore.

Spore had good ratings in all the official reviews (I can't recall a single review with a score less than 5/10), when it's actually a bad game and the user reviews do reflect that (metacritic = 4.5).

Haven't played Spore myself, so don't take this as an actual defence, but bear in mind a lot of the lower scores are people just spamming 1s because it has SecuROM. And that Metacritic user scores should not be used as evidence of anything.

I take user scores as a very rough indication.
8.4 official vs 4.5 by users is a huge discrepancy.

Take another (less) overrated like halo 3: 94 vs 72. That's a bit more like it.

In not living up to hype Mr Peter Molyneux wins it two generations in a row. Fable 1 was just not what it said - where was the seasonal clock that allowed growth EH?? But at least the dlc - The Lost Chapters - managed to help out.

Fable 2 didn't do anything it said, their dog was admittedly a crowning achievement but where was the 'hop in' co-op they talked about and the growth for trees was once again a lie. The totally free world with unlimited choices was a little ambitious and naturally that went wrong as well, it came down to two options with one real one and one that if you did by accident you'd have to re-load a save just to fix it.

There are so many titles to choose from...

Like so many others I would like to give the obligatory Halo 3 mention, but in all fairness I got off the hype bandwagon for the franchise after sitting in line 4 hours for the midnight release of the Halo 2 train wreck.

Sooo... That being said, I would have to say Fallout 3.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like the game, and I am still happy that it was even made at all after the troubled history of the franchise. However, F3 was billed as being the greatest thing since sliced bread, and all we got was a Fallout game that was stripped of everything that made Fallout 1 and 2 the cult RPG classics that they are. F3 was completely devoid of the dark humor, pop culture references, and overwhelming freedom that made Fallout 1 and 2 great staples of RPG history.

*Sigh* Maybe New Vegas will be a little closer to capturing the soul of the Fallout franchise.

For me, Halo 3, GoW 2, The new LotR game ( Don't recall the name of it at the moment) and Assassins Creed.

Though I don't often give in to hype, the new Assasins Creed game looks promising.
First of all, welcome to the Escapist!

Secondly, I think the new LotR game your thinking of is LotR: Conquest (Which sucked... Very badly.)
Yes, that was it. Thanks for the games name. That was driving me crazy!

Gotta be Mirror's edge. Seriously, it got so much hype in the beginning, but, when I bought it, I was disappointed at the way it turned out. Plus, I saw through the one twist in the game about 20 seconds in.

What twist was that?

my vote goes to halo.
Wanna talk about hype when halo 3 was about to be released you would have thought that space aliens and Jesus worked together to produce a game that came with 4 free hookers, 50 tons of gold and a magic lamp...

I have never seen a game get so much press... EVER
Hear that? That is the sound of flame bait catching fire at the sound of the word halo.

No that is my personal opinion concerning the massive amount of hype surrounding the release of halo 3.
Calling it out, would be you trying to cause a flame.
Good luck with that, this will be my last post in this topic.

im going with gears horde mode is fun but only with friends which are only one if without system link. The campaign has a few random sectors that are out of place.

Spore is the other one looked like it was going to be awesome but, epic fail

but i stand by halo {fan boy lol :)}
