Pointless...pointless....probably those NPCs that only have one line and it is ALWAYS out of context (see Metroid Prime 3 for further examples).
Also those characters that are part of the main party but serve no purpose (Jimminy Cricket from KH2, I don't know if he's as pointless in the first one)
And, the character you're forced to save even though they're really not the main focus of the game and only serve to set up the story (Ilia and the childrens from Zelda TP, possibly Aryll from Zelda WW).

Ashley Williams and Liara T'Soni from Mass Effect. Ash is a xenomorphic ***** and is the same class thta I am.(don't need two solders .) and Liara because she's just so damn bland and useless. Just give me Kaidan and Wrex and I'll be fine.

For most pointless game character, I'd have to say "The Sarge" from COD:WAW. Unlike the characters in COD4 that you really get attached to, this guy was every bit as interchangeable as your redshirt squad mates. And I really don't give a shit that he was voiced by Keifer Sutherland, it doesn't make him a legitimate character so much as an excuse to wave your willy around in interviews saying "WE HAVE BIG NAME VOICE TALENT IN THIS GAME HURR HURR".

Anyway, Ashley says funny psychotic things like how good the staircases in Citadel are for defensive purposes. Why would you play a soldier and have Mr. Milquetoast Alenko along with you instead? I have to agree Liara's bland, there is some humor to be had from deer-in-the-headlights moments though.
Juhani out of KotORI, now, was a pointless character and irritated my face off. Yes, let's have a catgirl, but let's make her ugly as sin and emo! And let's give her a thick quasi-slavic accent and make her a Jedi! Eesh. At least Mission had funny moments from time to time (and I'm not talking about the "lol force trip" cutscene).
