The developers decided to be lazy and programmed a scripty thingy to kill your character if they are falling and are above a certain height.
This sounds nice in theory but I found was that your character could fall for 200 meters without touching the ground, provided you could find a slope with the correct angle. It was also revealed that falling more than three feet will kill you, no exceptions.
I also found that sliding down a slope is half and half of those two, so that if you slide down a slope and drop onto a patch of flat ground that is under it you will survive, but if you have to jump a gap to land on the grass... well think of Portal when you set up that eternal fall thingy, then you turn off fall damage, then shoot a portal so it faces a wall......

Deflected a rocket that curved away from me at 270 degrees, into the wall I was standing next to for cover. The four witnesses proceeded to bury the chat channel in WTFs.
