It's name sounded retarded, and I hadn't yet realised that Brad Pitt wasn't a fuckwit.
You know, that guy has really grown on me. When I was 10 I assumed he was the equivalent of a douchebag to a tween, but now I am excited for every movie he is in.

OT: I was really surprised for the movie Memento. Chris Nolan is truly and under appreciated director.

Oh very very wrong. Brad Pitt and his wife aren't fuckwitts, they're good actors, they just need to learn to stop taking children away from their families.
He wasn't calling them Fuckwits, he was using a double negative. And think about it; I believe all of those kids were in orphanages, and they decided to help them out instead of bringing another child into the world.

Edit: I know I am gonna get hated on for this, but I did not like District 9. Don't get me wrong, it was well filmed and well acted, but I hated almost everything about it.

The protagonist was annoying, the story was rather underwhelming from what I built it up to be, and was just an unenjoyable movie for me.

I could have replaced the aliens with Normal human refugees and had the same movie (I am also aware that was the point, and aware of the whole Political Commentary thing), which is part of the reason why I was dissapointed. The whole "Aliens are on earth" thing was just underplayed.

What...

The director of Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Inception is an under appreciated director???

Are you high?

Anyway...

---

Good: In Bruges - No one I knew had seen it, I hadn't read any reviews or heard any comments about it, saw it and discovered it was amazing. The movie had MASSIVE shifts in emotional tone ranging from the murder of a child to a ketamine abusing racist dwarf, and was still a fucking great movie.

Bad: Hot Tub Time Machine - I heard good things about this movie from friends and critics, so was expecting a good time. I guess I was the opposite of what the target audience for this movie was because I didn't even chuckle once. I have no interest and very little knowledge of the 1980's and also am not into the drinking/drugs/party scene, so no part of the movie appealed to me as entertaining or funny.

Shockingly pleasant: Inglourious Basterds was hyped up largely as a shoot 'em up in Nazi Germany, which I was looking forward to, but came out as a heavily dialogue driven retelling of World War 2 with surprisingly little violence (although graphic). Were my expectations met? Fuck no. Was I satisfied? Fuck yeah. The movie was amazing and anybody who says otherwise is an unpleasable cretin.

Shifted equilibrium: The general opinion, I find, is that Alien/Aliens are top shelf horror/thriller/monster movies while Predator is considered a B-class horror/thriller/monster movie, but I thought Predator kicked way more arse than Alien/Aliens did. I guess I just have more interest in schlocky action movies than I do in suspensful movies. I found Arnie more interesting as he engaged in a fist fight with an otherworldly being more interesting than Sigourney Weaver fleeing from a largely unseen terror.

Good: Starship Troopers 3. hell yea!!

Bad: Don't hurt me but I didn't find Goodfellas to be all that great. I just couldn't get into it for some reason.

This is the most hilarious debuncle I have ever had.

Good: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Sure it wasn't great, but it was nowhere near as bad is everyone told me it would be.

Bad: Avatar

It wasn't bad per se, but the only way it was better than average was special effects, which were outstanding.

There we go. Three films that surprised me for those particular reasons.
OMG I can't believe someone else agrees with me that Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is a way better film. Thank you

Sympathy better than Old Boy?
I suppose Sympathy is a bit less convoluted. Have you seen Lady Vengeance? That is an awesome movie and the third one exploring the revenge theme.

Tremors - I saw it on tv and the description just sounded cheesy but there was nothing else on. Love that movie now.

Ashura was pure greatness, wasn't expecting too much as it is based on an opera but it was a fantastic film.
Yup, that is my opinion

Old Boy is an incredibly good movie, don't get me wrong, but there are reasons why I like Sympathy more.

For starters, they are both very differently directed. Sympathy is a much slower-paced movie than Old Boy, very little exposition is given, and when it is given, it is often in the form of visuals and not just someone telling you. It reminds me of the shooting style of Takeshi KItano, my personal favorite director.

There is also the problem of Old Boy asking for a lot of suspension of disbelief. Now, I completely bought the ending, hook line and sinker, but that doesn't change the fact that the explanation for some of the up-until-now plot holes (Like why Mi-Do is still with him after he tried to rape her) is very implausible, and anyone who isn't completely immersed in the story (someone who, say, is annoyed at the aformentioned "plot holes") will probably call bullshit.

And as for the final reason why I consider Sympathy to be superior, it's because I love a really, really depressing downer story. Old Boy is a depressing downer story alright, and it is also about revenge. But in Old Boy the main theme is that we are tricked to believe that

The story is about Oh Dae-Su's revenge, when it's actually about Woo-Jin's

while in sympathy the theme is that

in the end we will sympathize with one of the main characters the most, therefore ensuring that which ever side we pick, we will be immensely saddened by the ending.

They are both very similar to Greek Tragedies, which I adore, but Sympathy more so than Old Boy. Old Boy had an open-ended conclusion, so it's up for the viewer themselves to decide whether it was positive or negative (me being on the positive side), while Sympathy is always a downer.
The agree that there is too much suspension of disbelief with Old Boy. I also think that Ryu is a much more compelling character than Oh Dae-Su. Ryu is continually trying to make things right but by doing it the wrong way and this causes him to get deeper and deeper into trouble. This is not even mentioning the fact that he's Deaf and Dumb which adds a whole other layer to the way he does things. Oh Dae-Su on the other hand is almost a non-character by virtue of the fact that he was imprisoned for so many years how he acts and how he does things.

To me what makes Sympathy better is just its raw and gritty nature which you can see in its cinematography which i think it does much better than Oldboy. Oldboy is a nice looking movie but it really does seem like he's trying to hard to be David Fincher.

Also I hate HATE sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I feel like there are so many good elements that just failed to come together for it. I like the whole language barrier that she had wih her daughter, i like the prison story stuff but it was all just... I don't know i can't explain it. Thats why i wasnt all angry to hear that there would be an american remake of it because i think it could fix the majority of that films problems

I expected Die Hard to be a poor action movie. I was proved wrong, and I still believe it is one of the best action movies of all time.
I had heard very good things about Burn after reading. I was proved wrong. The story seemed unfinished, the actions of the characters were hardly explained, and the needless killing was odd.

I think he did a bad snip. One of the people that the person YOU responded to had quoted someone else, who HE was responding to.

Two Words: Black Dynamite.

That movie i expected to be eight types of stupid, and it turned out to be 10 types of completely silly awesomeness.

Its a spoof of 70's blacksplotation films.

And it kicks ass
See, I went in thinking it was going to be maybe a little chuckle worthy, and I was completely blown away. The point where I realized I really loved this movie is when the main character goes into this monologue about having been in Vietnam, but he keeps referring to everybody there as Chinese.

Or maybe it was the epic nun-chuck fight scene in the White House between Black Dynamite and Richard Fucking Nixon.

Let down goes to Spider-Man. I was so excited for this when it came out, and then I slowly watched as all my enthusiasm drained out and felt like I was watching a snuff film of my childhood. Two more dreadful and I hope the series is done. As much as I loved Spidey growing up, I'd rather they never make another film.

Surprise goes to Amelie. This was based on some snobby folks saying it was overly sentimental rubbish. What I found was one of the most charming and realistic portrayals of awkward people stumbling through life and finding one another. Amelie is the only character in a film I was smitten with, she has some sort of quirky power.

Most Suprising Good: Boogie Nights

I went into this movie, only knowing so little about it (The Scene with Sister Christian and the very end were all I heard about), saw it, and after the movie was over, I said, quote verbatim:

That was the most amazing movie EVER
and I promptly watched it again the next day.

Most Suprisingly Bad: What Dreams May Come

Sadly, the best thing about it was the visuals, the ideals of heaven and hell and the brief Warner Herzog cameo, but I wish it wasn't as disappointing to watch. I might rewatch it again, but I couldn't enjoy it, which is sad, because I really wanted to enjoy it.

Good: Stardust. It got such stick from people and did so poorly in the box office, but then I rented it and feel completely in love. It ended up being my favourite movie. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. I honestly didn't think I'd like it, what with my dislike of live-action Disney flicks (save for the first Pirates), the video game being one of my all time favs and the fact that it was PG-13. I also spent the entire film comparing it to the game, which thankfully my friend didn't mind.

Bad: The Village. I went into it expecting a good horror flick (and I was young when it came out, so I was easy to scare) and there was probably one point in the entire thing that made me jump.

Any particular thing? Is it the nature of the whole thing in that despite my best efforts to 'debunkle' your misconception, it's still about calling people fuckwitts, or was there something else?
Nah, just the fact that we're arguing about who said who was a fuckwit.
