Note: There are already threads about the worst weapons in games, but this thread is slightly different, so therefore searchbar-approved.

So, Escapists, have you ever been playing a game and have been reluctant to use a certain weapon even if it is fairly powerful, just because it sucks and isn't fun to use? It's one of those things that seems stupid to have thrown into a game and in multiplayer seems to unbalance the match.

My example of this is Halo 3's Spartan Laser. I never use it--not because I suck with it, but because it's the new "n00b t00b". You don't really need any skill to use it and it blows up anything with one hit. Its role was, I think, already perfectly filled by the rockets that homed in on vehicles in Halo 2. The degradation of the Halo 3 rockets and the inclusion of the Laser just seems like a redundant move and a lame Bungie attempt to make a boring weapon seem fun. At least it's fun when you get killed by rockets because things go flying everywhere. With the laser you just drop dead/blow up.

Any thoughts on this, or other examples?

The Sniper Rifle in Left 4 Dead. The zoom scope is rather pointless, especially when zombies are rushing at you. If I wanted to snipe at things, I'd play Team Fortress 2 instead.

Most of the weapons in Custom Robo didn't do it for me. I felt like they were just in there to fill in space, and make it seem like there were a lot of options, while in reality, there were only a handful of useful ones.

Akimbo shotguns.

I don't use them because it feels like cheating and kills just come way too easy.

Also, Fallout 3's Lazer Rifle. Made completely redundant by the Plasma Rifle. They should have had the Lazer Rifle use energy cells.

Thank the Nine I wasn't the only one who loathed those things >_>

OT: I refrain from using the 1887's, for the aforementioned reason that they are just way too overpowered.

The Nevan and Beowulf gauntlets from DMC3 were the two that I used the least in that game. I also rarely used the Spartan Laser cannon from Halo 3, it had too much of a trigger pull/ fire delay, which made it all but useless for most occasions (p.s. I only played the single player campaign)

I love the sniper rifle! There's nothing better than taking down an entire Super Mutant or Raider camp with sneak attack critical headshots before they even know you're there.

Bows in Oblivion. I have no idea why anybody would use them.

Also, the grenade launcher from mw2. I get no satisfaction out of a kill with that thing.

I always use them. Is there something wrong with me?

OT: Blasters in KoTOR. Useless for you and pretty much half your party.

Several games actually:

Turoc: Rage Wars: The default crossbow you start with and the assault rifle are massively overpowered.

MW: World at War: The Tank

MW2: The grenade launcher is massively overpowered.

TF2: Dead Ringer for spy. It's deadly if you have someone really good at spy.

You just aren't using it right/No one on your teams have taken the time to master it. Its pretty much my preferred weapon in the original Left 4 Dead, as I can easily take out Smokers before they even see us. Personally, I think think the best way to go is two assault rifles, an auto-shotgun, and a hunting rifle. You'll have everything covered.

OT: Any custom weapon I put together in Alone In the Dark. Or the Spartan Laser from Halo 3. I just hated the build on that thing.

The .32 pistol from Fallout 3.

Literally, there was no use for it.
True, especially since it used the same ammunition as the infinitely better hunting rifle.

I WANT to talk about some guns in the APB closed beta, but its a breach of the NDA and i'd be kicked out...

So i'll just say the STG44 in CoD4, i mean, really guys? I get all that way to unlock a gun made in 1944? and it doesnt even have attachments? Lame.

Hrm, any Shotgun in a game that spewed it's shots so wide you need to get right up in the enemy's face for it to be any use. I'm looking at you Doom 3..

and Pandora's Box in Devil May Cry 4, the game had a lot of bad weapons but I saw no point to this, it does a lot of incredibly goofy things but inevitably fails to be of any real use, especially since it can't be used to properly extend combos or add any fluency to combat.
