Had this debate earlier with a mate, i mean con what is the most underated Metal/heavy/hard rock out there???

Personally in my opinion it would have to be Saxon, as i mean they've been around for so long and were at one point the leaders of the NWOBHM instead of Iron Maiden  Also they know how to put on a great show and have great songs.

Another one for me would have to be orange goblin as I just love their music XD personally should be know alot more than they are :]

But whats your opinion???

Rolo Tomassi-no one here's probably ever heard of them, but they're a mental band, and absolutely insane live.

Dream Theater, my favourite band. They've been around almost 25 years, are hugely influential among other musicians, practically invented the progressive metal genre (with all due respect to Queensryche), and have a devoted global following, and yet most mainstream metalheads have never heard of them!

Chthonic, the Taiwanese black metal band. They take the essential black metal philosophy of rebellion, but instead of rebelling against Christianity like the Scandinavian bands, they rebel against capitulation with mainland China. Their corpse paint is based on figures from ancient Taiwanese folklore and they incorporate some traditional Chinese instruments into their music.

After Forever, sadly disbanded. There are a lot of Dutch female-fronted goth/symphonic metal bands, including The Gathering, Within Temptation, and Epica. For some reason, After Forever got the least attention, especially in North America, which I never understood. Floor Jansen is the best vocalist out of all of them. She could do the high, pure opera stuff like the rest of them, but she could also belt it out like a rough-edged rock singer (compare "Monolith of Doubt" with "Face Your Demons"). And musically they were more accomplished than Gathering or WT (I'll put them on par with Epica, since Epica's guitarist was a co-founder of AF).

After Forever are good, yeah
But I think Within Temptation and Epica are better

Chthonic are brilliant! Superb live and Ive met them when I was very drunk in the press bar at a metal festival.

I have to vote Xentrix there cover of Ghostbusters was my highlight of the Nineties, which wasnt Lawnmower Deth!

The Dillinger Escape Plan, I don't know anyone who likes them.

Critics love them, it is just that most people either have not heard them or don't give them a chance.

I'm sure everyone's heard of Candlemass, but they are really underrated considering how long they've been around. They're really consistent, still going strong since 1984, but don't seem to get the recognition that they deserve.

What about something a little less well-known than Candlemass, though? What about Lurker of Chalice? Sure, Wrest's other project Leviathan has gained more recognition, but what of the more ambient side of Wrest's music? The terms "depressive" and "suicidal" are often attached to certain black metal bands (Xasthur, for example), but Lurker of Chalice is... something different.

Summoning. Though not entirely unknown, they make some of the best black metal around, yet are far less acknowledged by the wide audiences than the popular black metal bands.

Arkona. Russian folk with a female vocalist who growls, sings clean and everything. They're easily as good as Korpiklaani or Finntroll yet are totally obscure in comparison to those.
By extension of Arkona I could also mention the whole slavic folk metal scene, which is awesome.

Oh, and Necrogoblikon. An american band that sings almost exclusively like/about goblins. Need I say more?

Saxon are not underrated at all.
