In my past experience... PHWonline. When I joined, I was almost shocked at how incredibly immature they were compared to every other forum I was a part of. These guys just threw themselves at me. Not to mention the corruption going on with the staff, which only made things worse. Apparently, the site owner was a dick.
The place has great Garry's Mod comics though. And I mean GREAT.
Currently, however, I'd have to say the WoW community (well, it's no longer a community as far as I'm concerned). I'd say 4chan, but that doesn't even count to me.
How and 4chan and WoW not comunities, there some of the biggest in the world.
IMO, 4chan is just a place where a shitload of people come together and post anonymously, for the most part. To me, it's not exactly a community.
As for WoW, it used to be a good community but as time went on and as more and more people joined up (which was a good thing, obviously), an unwelcome side effect reared its ugly head in that we saw more and more idiots and arrogant morons join. Back in the vanilla days, the community was at its strongest. Players all knew each other, we all knew who to avoid and who was good, who the ninjas were, etc. Every player had a reputation. If you messed up or did something stupid like ninja items for your own gain (or even just treated other players like shit), everyone would know and avoid you. Likewise, if you were good (and respectful), you were respected in kind. That's what kept most people in line in terms of demeanour and behaviour. Massive battles, spur of the moment or otherwise, took place all over Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms between Alliance and Horde players, most notably in places such as Hillsbrad. Everyone, for the most part, had a good time with it.
Unfortunately, these days, the sense of community that WoW once had is gone. World PvP is replaced by occasional sparring matches between vengeful level 80s trying to keep world PvP flags such as the towers in the Plaguelands and the three nodes in Hellfire Peninsula for themselves by assassinating level 60 players who try to take these areas for the zone-wide buffs they provide. Ninjas run around largely unnoticed and the few that are known are actually encouraged by other players to ninja, much to the chagrin of the non-ninja players. The patience that players had for each other is long gone - now, ADHD (not literal ADHD of course) has tightly gripped 90% (relatively speaking) of the WoW player-base. People can't even wait ten (or even
two) minutes before getting bored and pissing off. Rudeness and unnecessary trolling is encouraged. Players aren't, in my experience, anywhere near as friendly as they used to be back in the vanilla days. Even though vanilla WoW wasn't perfect, the community was certainly much, MUCH better back then. In my eyes, there's no more WoW community. It's just gone. Now it's just morons dicking around with each other. The closest thing to a community in WoW these days is the forums, and even then there's too many trolls on there for it not to be dubious.
Apologies for the wall of text, but I feel it explains my point of view somewhat near perfectly on why WoW doesn't count as a real community to me anymore.
I guess you could say that it's so bad a community that it's no longer a real community.

That's one way of putting it.
