Most unlikable Final Fantasy main character?

I'd say Tidus or Vaan. But, I don't consider them to be the main characters of their respective games. Sure, the games are mostly told from their point of view, but I don't feel they are the leads in the story. That honor would go to Yuna (or arguably Auron) in FFX and Basch/Ashe for FFXII. Tidus and Vaan are just along for the ride. Vaan especially feels like one of those temporary party members some FF games stick you with at the beginning, only to kill them off to add dramatic tension. Except Vaan didn't die and sort of stuck around.

So I'm gonna go with Squall. I dislike him less than Tidus/Vaan, but he's still an insufferable git. How he landed Rinoa, I'll never know. Still better than Cloud though. The guy had a total babe with complete devotion to him right there all along, but he had to go chase after the unattainable pixie instead.

Titus at least grows as a character and he's generally got a positive attitude. Because of his growth he actually has a pretty high spot on my Final Fantasy Main Characters rating scale.

Squall on the other hand is composed almost entirely of negative elements... he's a jerk, he's a whiner, he's apathetic, he treats the other characters like garbage, he has no sense of humor and his character design is way to J-Pop for most peoples liking. Also he barely grows throughout the course of the game and doesn't get nearly so punchy and ending as Tidus.

Still though, he's not my most "hated" Final Fantasy main character... that dubious honor goes to Vaan of FF12... his voice is grating as hell, he serves no purpose in the plot, has no character development and has horrible character design. Worst of all the REST of the cast is so damn good... what is this little putz doing there? At least FFX had Wakka to make Tidus look slightly less ridiculous.

This is surprisingly academic. I like your criticism of Squall. He's always seemed like Square said "Everyone liked Cloud, let's do that again but without the driving influence from his past to justify why he was a complete ponce."

vaan is so utterly useless, that game could've been so much better had they gotten rid of/fixed him and penelope.

squall is just a jerky emo piece of trash, the only game i liked him in was the kingdom heart series, and even then that was a massive "meh".

hope and tidus hold nothing compared to those two

OT: I can't say I'm particularly a fan of Rikku from FFX. Thinking about it now though, it was most likely because I was without Yuna for a while in the game, being my main healer and all that, and Rikku didn't really make a very good substitute. At least from my experience.

Of course the fact that she seems to hog up a lot of screen time compared to some of the other characters doesn't help much either.

Thank you for writing it out so I didn't have to. VIII was the last of the series I ever played, and Squall is why I quit after two hours or so.

I actually REALLY liked Tidus. He had some of the best development from point A to point Z. And who can't love the fact that he learns haste within the first fraction of play? Hyperactive child at the start, and a nice change all throughout.

That's not the topic though. Most unlikable for me, which others have said, is Vaan. That's sort of cheap, though, since others have really pointed it out, so I'm going to take it a step further and maybe be a part of unpopular opinion.

Celes. I can't find it within my heart to like her. She's supposed to be a big badass, but almost every part of her main arc is her needing someone else to use as a crutch. The particular part at the start of the second half of the game just made me go "Welp, that could've gone better."

Possibly the only main protagonist in a game I actively disliked. His friends would do everything to cheer him up and he'd be like 'Whatever' also he would make everything about him.

I think I would end up punching him if I was Rinoa.

Most of the cast of 13 sucked too but most people have already gone over that.

I can actually totally defend everyone from ff13, but I wont now because I'm tired, I might edit this post or do a new one tomorrow, apart from Vanille and Fang. Not even because I hate them I just really don't care about them in anyway. Their characters just aren't very interesting. They're quite obviously a couple and that isn't my pervy side talking (much, sorry sorry) and it's kinda sweet especially at the end but that seems like their whole character, and its pretty boring.

I guess... um... fuck, Squall maybe. Squall or Tidus. Bear in mind I've only played 8, halfway through 9, 10, the disk broke on 12 so I never got past the title screen, 13 and 14 doesn't count. Squall is a whiny fool who seems to enjoy being stupid and Tidus is just more irritating than anything this world has ever produced. Anything.

Yeah. I see a lot of people saying Squall. If you play enough of FFVIII, he does develop. And they work his assholeness into the story. Like, the reason he is how he is is to do with his childhood. No spoilers here. And he does change later. He's still quiet, but he doesn't respond to everything with silence or dickheadedness. That part might warrant as a spoiler. Depends. Shh.

I probably won't survive the night for saying this, but my vote goes for Cloud. I don't mean to annoy anyone by saying this, but I can honestly see nothing at all that's good about him. To me he's basically Squall without the development and without any interesting qualities whatsoever. All through the game all he seemed to do was moan, and anything that wasn't moaning was completely monotonous or needlessly harsh. I can see people loving him for the nostalgia factor, but while I do quite like FFVII, Cloud really weighed down what could've been a much better game to me.

Special mention goes to Tidus, if only for his voice actor. The character itself wasn't actually that bad. He was an idiot, but not a bad idiot. If the voice actor wasn't such so squeaky and had more than one tone of voice Tidus would've been much more bearable.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Hope. How the hell could I forget Hope? Seriously. Fuck Hope.

I'd answer this but serious problem is that I think more of them are annoying than ot. Squall is a closed off emo, Zidane and most of the cast I didn't like, Tidus was a whiny little -, and that's pretty much where I cut off. I really enjoyed 5,6,7, 7-Crisis Core, Tactics but other than that I legitimately didn't like the series despite playing most of the games at 3/4ths through.
