Most unlikable Final Fantasy main character?

Burst6, I think you hit the nail on the head. I honestly never thought about it like that before, and though I don't have a problem with Hope, putting it the way you did makes me think a bit differently about why other people do.
Well, I can't speak on behalf of most of the franchise since I have had limited experience, but as far as my least favorite character from the one Final Fantasy game I own - that being Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS - that may require some thought.
My first inclination would be towards Edward given how in the grand scheme of things he is almost completely useless in battle. That said though, he is a hopeless romantic with a tragic back-story involving Anna and did help out Cecil with the Dark Elf.
My next possible candidate would be Kain, as he apparently has no ability to resist mind control even after being exposed more than once, but he seems to fill that somewhat Japanese archetype of the emotionally distant rival and was supportive of Cecil after the events in Mist, plus with the right abilities and equipment can be one of the most powerful characters in the party.
I am also tempted to use the twins Palom and Porum, but they are just kids and technically do play a role in the plot for the most part, and I do kind of like the Twincast magic for the novelty value.
Really, I kind of liked all of the characters from that game. So, for me at least, the character I could say then that I cared for the least was Fusoya.
Think about it: aside from spilling out exposition about the Lunarians and Cecil's back-story, Fusoya's only true purpose is to take Kain's place for a while until the Giant of Babil is destroyed before leaving with Golbez to attempt to fight Zemus. To me, he just seems like a placeholder and doesn't seem to evolve past that specific role. His design was fairly uninteresting given the other vibrant designs of the game, he had a single useful ability - Bless - and he already knows pretty much every White Magic and Black Magic spell in the game, which should be useful except Rydia's summons are far more effective and Rosa and Cecil already have a large library of magic anyway.
That isn't to say I have a seething hatred for him; I just don't think he was as important as he could have been.

I have only been able to play 3 FF games and they JUST SO HAPPEN to create a nice little triad of annoyingness: FF8, FF10, and FF12. Because of my somewhat limited expertise in all things final fantasy, I'll just stick to what I know.
Squall is a good character in a very interesting story but if, and only if, you take into consideration a interesting fan theory. (skip this to avoid any spoilers) Pretty much in a nutshell, Squall was dead from disk 2 onwards. If you can recall, at the end of Disk one, squall was hit by some magic by the sorceress and then falls off the float. After this, the party is taken to prison and the next time we see him he is waking up. He makes a comment about his wound having disappeared and it isn't mentioned again. Tidus is pretty annoying due to his personality being that of a semi-spoiled brat. I generally hated him For just existing.

What a DICK! He should be more like Lightning and be unhelpful, shove his mistakes and responsibilities onto others and assault them for it and yet still keep a condescending attitude towards the others for 90% of the ride. Oh and crippling depression too. Can't have a character that isn't gloomy in a Final Fantasy game. I hate nice, mostly selfless characters with a positive outlook. He's such an idiot.
And Snow has more of a personality than Vanille, Lightning or even Fang do. Hope is debatable, although that one is horribly executed. Sazh probably has the upper hand in this case. Seriously though, out of all the gloomy, self-centered, unhelpful dicks in the team, Snow is one of the few people who actually try to act like actual kind people. Besides, his role is more of a catalyst for the development of other characters, as his own personality is already a step above most other characters from the beginning anyway (and this finally finishes somewhere towards the ending).
Seriously though, fuck Lightning. When it comes to horrible personalities in Final Fantasy games, she somehow takes the title without too much difficulty. And I've played 8,10 and 11, so that says quite a bit.

I see we have different ideas about Snow to me he just seemed extremely weak and annoying throughout the game his constant Im gonna be a hero crap gets old really quickly if youre gonna be a hero just do it for gods sake stop talking about it but he dosent he starts the game saying im gonna be a hero and thats all he ever says throughout the game right up till it conclusion just like a broken record seriously dood get over yourself, theres a reason he gets abused throughout the game by Lightning and its because hes so unlikeable in every way (although maybe thats what they were going for if so bravo because they nailed it and hes a masterfully crafted character for this purpose), I wasnt particularly fond of Lightning either but at least she got on with stuff without spouting recycled garbage every other line and ocasionally you saw a different side to her. He's annoying, he's literally the reason that I didn't finish the game. I literally hated him. He's the sort of person who I would either never associate with; if they refused to let that happen, I would really, really want to hurt them.alphamalet said:

It's realistic sure, but I don't want to have that shit in my games. I don't play games to listen to children whinge and complain. I could sit around on the train around 3:15 if I wanted that.
I don't know who all of those characters are, but I think the fact that I am now 21 not a pre-teen/teen probably has something to do with it. Also, Vivi was sad/shy, but wasn't pathetic.

No. I hated him so much that I turned it off and haven't touched it since. I'm such a huge FF fan than I actually imported a Japanese Lightning Edition PS3, when it was stolen, I never got around to replacing it. I intended to fully, then right before I did I realised that not only do I not need a PS3, but FF13 was fucking aweful.
You're probably right about the writing being consistent, and I definitely agree that if hope's character had existed in FF1, I might have put up with him. I wouldn't have liked him, but I probably wouldn't have given up on the game due to him.
